I have been soldiering 32 years and fought in 14 different theatres...and I cant make head or foot of what anyone will do in this war, from day to day. Ukrainian forces are using Asymmetric tactics for just this reason...which is good tactics for this war.....and Russia hasn't a clue what it wants...has no real strategic targets and is just pushing like a brute where possible, and taking what it can, and this is where they are losing. These tactics can leave huge gaps that Ukraine can make great use of with their tactics. One million soldiers is 2,5% of the population. It's not an unrealistic number. At the height of WW2 involved nations had between 5 and 30% of their population as soldiers. After months of war I'd expect those sort of numbers.
@ragerancher2 жыл бұрын
I guess it's less about the ability to mobilise that many people and more about the ability to have that many people properly trained, equipped and organised into a proper command structure in that time. Ukraine didn't start the process of increasing their numbers the day of the invasion (as far as I'm aware). Ukraine could definitely mobilise that many people but it's a question of whether they are mobilised to a high standard or little more than militia with whatever weapons are lying around to basically be used as fodder and to fill in gaps whilst the professional army does the rest. That's ok if you plop them in an urban environment that they have to defend but quite different if you want to utilise them in a coordinated attack or any sort of manoeuvre warfare.

I've been hearing numbers from 5-7 hundred thousand for some time. I feel these numbers are achievable for Ukraine. It's also important to know that the aid given by the US so far, about 8 billion worth, is not inclusive of the 40 billion in Lend-Lease that was already approved. The first shipments from that are set to arrive any time now. And if 8 Himars can do so much damage, imagine what they can do with 12 of those and a dozen or so M270 MLRS arriving from Briton and Norway about now. By August, there could be 50 or 100 such systems in Ukraine.
@brianeleighton2 жыл бұрын
The $40 billion isn't the Lend/Lease program. That was earmarked separately by Congress as the direct military aid America is going to give Ukraine. Everything given to Ukraine under that $40 billion umbrella is just a gift to Ukraine from Uncle Sam. Then ON TOP of that aid, Congress passed Lend/Lease and Biden waited until May 9th to sign it. He did that as a big middle finger to Russia since that day is a huge holiday in Russia as it is the day the Germans surrendered to end WW2. Any equipment given to Ukraine under that program has to be either returned when the war is over or paid for. However, Lend/Lease gives the Ukrainians very favorable terms for repayment. Under regular US law, any military equipment provided to another nation not as direct aid has to be completely paid for within 5 years. Lend/Lease allows the US to set repayment terms for as far out as 99 years. In other words, Ukraine will have almost 100 years to pay back the US. The other thing Lend/Lease does is it allows the President to pull any equipment deemed necessary for Ukraine's defense directly from active American units for shipment to Ukraine. The American unit will pull a piece of equipment out of mothballed storage until they can get a new one from the factory. This way, Ukraine isn't waiting on our factories to get them equipment. For instance, the US is currently training members of the Ukrainian Air Force on F-15s, F-16s and F/A-18s. These are going to be provided under Lend/Lease as only a few aircraft will rapidly drain the $40 billion in aid.

That’s the West for you, slow to respond, but when it gets going… ooooh Boy! This is probably why Putin wanted a swift and decisive victory and why the Russians were attempting blitzkrieg tactics when the war began, to force Ukraine to surrender before the bulk of Western aid even had a chance to get sent, much less arrive. Plucky Ukraine however, played to its strengths and Russia’s weaknesses, and held out long enough that Putin was forced to abandon his original plan. Now Russia is trying desperately to achieve a semblance of a victory, again, before the bulk of Western aid arrives, because if Ukraine can be armed with Western Weapons, such as night vision goggles for ALL their infantry (or at least 50%), smart missile systems, modern planes and tanks, then Russia doesn’t stand a chance. For one, Russia has next to no night fighting capabilities, as barely any of their troops are equipped with night vision. If the Ukrainians could get their hands on night vision goggles and distribute them to a majority of its forces, then night raids for Ukraine would become their most effective form of combat against Russia. And since Russia has run through its stockpile of smart weapons, and is quickly running out of its more modern tanks (if they can really be called that at this point, giving the poor performance), Ukraine getting its hands on more modern weaponry would tip the scales in their favour. Will it be a gruelling, long and bitter war, yes, but so long as Ukraine maintains the Will to fight, I believe they have a chance at winning, even a minor victory, in which they force the Russians out of Donbas and Crimea, or even white peace, where there’s no exchange of territory, and things go back to pre war status.
@jonathanryan99462 жыл бұрын
Just for those who don't know. The M270 uses the same rockets the HIMARS does (but twice as many per truck). The catch is they have tracks instead of wheels (so slower (64.5 km/h or 39 mph vs HIMARs 85 km/h or 53 mph) but can go off road better). Basically it's kinda a good thing to have a mix of both. HIMARS means they can drive them down all the countries roads and redeploy them fast (or drive to a reloading station fast). While M270 can attack from more unexpected places (harder now for Russian drones to locate, as they literally gotta look everywhere now vs just the roads) and fire twice as much per reload, but will be slower getting to a reload location.

So how long will Russia be able to keep it up till they out of ammo or they run out of guns by firing them too much and not being able to replace said barrel. I the destruction of these ammo depots becoming that much more important. No ammo depot, less ammo for Russian artillery to shoot with.

I am not sure about the Point you are trying to make. But is not either Scenario a good thing for Ukraine? On the one Hand the Weapons are to worn down to be used effectively anymore on the other Hand if there is no Ammo to shoot anymore I see no Disadvantage to Ukraine if they don't wear them down cause they can not shoot them. A bit badly worded by me. Let me retry. Scenario A. Russian Artillery is so worn down cause of the Mass Shelling that their Effectiveness takes a major hit. Less Accuracy, and possible Damage to the own Forces through misfire. Scenario B. Enough Ammo Depots have been destroyed so they can not keep up their Mass Shelling Strategy. This means less strain on the Weapons, but Weapons that don't have the Ammo to shoot are no Disadvantage to the Ukrainian Forces. I think Scenario A is the best Scenario Russia can hope for and Scenario B. is the best for the Ukrainian Forces. But now matter how you look at it, both are good for Ukraine in terms of "Benefit" towards the War Efforts. "Benefits" in "" cause technically correct I dislike calling this War and everything that is happening as something Good.

Russia's army is not very well suited for fast combined warfare like the US did in let's say Iraq. It is suited to just outgun and pulverize and do more damage than your opponent through massive shelling. This is why you saw the stumbling and failing in north Ukraine. This is why Russia regrouped. This is why they've resorted to shelling one position after another and slowly pushing instead of making big moves. They can do this for years if need be. There's no rush and Russia is mostly self sufficient, so sanctions won't make a difference. You can mock the Russians all you want, but right now they're doing what suits them and they're doing fine. it is exactly that Ukraine wasn't united that this war started. The ethnic Russians were sorely mistreated by the current installed regime. Yes regime, because the current president is installed by CIA (tape was leaked describing the plans to topple the pro-Russian previous president). In a campaign to further so called US interests, the country descended into conflict within its borders. Did you know that cutting off water to civilians is a warcrime? This is what happened to the Crimean population by the country you're praising here. The Azov brigade toting around with their nazi symbols is also something you can stand behind? How about the treatment of ethnic Russians, relegating them to 2nd class citizens in Ukraine? I'm not pro Russian, they should have tried other means to alter the situations instead of invading. The news however would make you believe that there were no crimes and no provocations and that Ukraine is perfectly innocent. My point: don't back either side. Let them duke it out and when the dust settles, let's make sure the reasons for the conflict are resolved properly so no future ones erupt. The backing of Ukraine also have a nasty side effect: it isolates Russia further and creates a new antagonist (this has been happening for decades since the fall of the Berlin wall and the fall of the Soviet Union) You cannot expect no fallout from this uncritical support of Ukraine, sending weapons most of all. There will be consequenses in the future.

There has been offensive operations: the sinking of Moskva, the missile attacks on Maripol, the retaking of Snake Island. Retaking ground is difficult as it neutralises Russia's weakness which is their inept organisation they cannot coordinate offensive operations. Still, part of a good defence is the capacity to counterattack, Russian forces resemble French forces in 1940 with a moribund command structure, useless communications and Russian troops have even less will to fight. With good concentration of forces and promises of good treatment for surrendered troops there's potentially incredible breakthroughs.

Beyond new rocket artillery systems and plans for further mobilization, there is another crucial factor, though not entirely new, playing a major role to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities. Which is the sharing of US and NATO Intel. This allows to keep continuous track of every russian unit (down to single pieces of equipment) in the area of operation. Even after equipment is moved under cover or concealed, still is known where it is. The rocket artillery is now taking advantage from such info to strike precisely the most important targets. Given that russians are now moving very slowly, firing coordinates remain valid for much longer. On the other side, Himars are changing positions continuously, russians can't get their coordinates from satellite imagery in time to strike, their problem is compounded by the almost complete lack of recon aviation and drones. It is correct russians need new drones, as the ones they used had radiocontrols easily jammed. What the russians still can do is shoot at stationary targets, that's why they target populated centers hoping to catch military targets in them (but contrary to their propaganda, they lack the intel about such military targets and mostly hit civilians).

Then the big question is how are the Russians still gaining new territory every day when every news outlets keeps saying Ukraine is winning from the beginning of the effing war. I am a soldier on that Kherson frontline. HIMARS are awesome but we were able to blow up a couple of dozens of Russian ammo depos and a couple of command centers. So far this is enough to temprorarily slow down Russian advance before they switch to a greater amount of smaller ammo storages. To keep up with the Russian logistics adaptation we need like 50 HIMARS/m270 to stall the artillery resupply. Then again this not enough to start gaining ground.

Russia's artillery problem is actually worse than just ammo. The barrels on artillery pieces is a disposable component, it can only take so many shots fired through it before it loses accuracy and eventually breaks, as a result you actually want to fire your guns as little as possible to preserve barrel life. What Russia is doing has to be burning through barrels at an incredible pace, and it wouldn't surprise me if those barrels were kept at the stockpiles as well so... the is a non-zero chance that good number of Russian guns are at or near their limit right now.

While the russians do indeed have a huge artillery advantage, you have to also account for the fact that their logistics is poor at best and we don't even know how decent the rear-line engineering and spares support is, but my money is on the fact that is probably similarly poor, which becomes an important factor as the days keep rolling on. This mostly because the artillery and tanks have barrels, and barrels of heavy ordinance have a limited operational life-time. With each shell shot, the barrels suffer fatigue, and after a few thousand rounds, the barrels get so fatigued they will become increasingly inaccurate. Without fast and effective support to fix the artillery, at 20+ thousand shells a day, very soon these artillery pieces and tanks will start becoming ineffective at hitting designated targets or straight up exploding in the field from fatigue derived malfunctions. I think the situation will start rapidly degrading for russian forces as time goes on.

They consist about 10% of the total Crimean population. However, I think it should be an autonomous republic inside Ukraine (as it was before it got annexed). And it needs to be “crimeantatarized” to revert what Soviet Union was doing and what Russia is doing now. They “russified” the peninsula and changed lots of original names for towns and villages to Russian. Well, they did the same to the big part of Ukraine too. I think the combination of getting top notch intel from the west and the more modern weapon systems that are starting to appear on the battlefield right now will make things very difficult for Russia. We saw this before with the sinking of the Moskva, which most likely was also a result of western intel being delivered to the Ukrainians. If this mobilisation combined with training in the west and modern weapon systems will go as planned I think the Russians will need to rethink their strategy. Their slow method of reducing cities to rubble with artillery won´t work anymore since their ammo dumps will just get blown up. What I´m afraid about though is what Russia will do once Ukraine starts to gain back serious territory. My guess is Putin will not just hang back and accept this. I think at this point he will most likely declare war on Ukraine so he can also start full mobilisation in Russia. The amount of damage this would wreck on the whole world in terms of even higher energy prices/food prices will be catastrophic. I'm not very optimistic about the end of this conflict.

With advanced weapon systems Ukraine can now neutralize Russian artillery while smaller Ukrainian ground units continue to demoralize Russian troops by constant harassment at the front and sabotage of supply lines. Slow and steady wins the race.

Another 20-30% are likely part of reserve forces, border guards and territorial units meant to be held back in case of incursions from Belarus, Transnistria or the North East. I reckon then there might be 300k-500k combat ready troops, the majority of whom are prob already on the front lines. And in any case, during normal times only a small amount of in active combat before being rotated out. In a big offensive it'll be important to have large reserves that can exploit or stabilize any breakthroughs. Doubly so because a breakthrough operation is overly using Ukraine's best trained/experienced/equipped units. The motivated light infantry volunteers that Ukraine has an abundance of are likely being used to hold defensive positions or shore up enemy counter attacks...

Russia may have and continue to hold an absolute advantage in the numbers of artillery but that is not the whole story. You also have to look at the quality of what each side holds and this is starting to show a different picture. Let's start with a preposition: both sides have have discovered a camp of their enemy. It is 15 miles behind the front and consists of a farmstead with a couple of tanks and BMP/other vehicles dotted nearby in barns and such like with soldiers billeted in the main house. They call in their artillery to demolish it. The Russians using their dumb inaccurate artillery have to carpet the area to be sure of success so fire 500 shells at the farm. Ukraine using modern smart systems only need to fire a dozen shots at the farm to be pretty sure of destroying everything. Russia is hamstrung because they NEED to be firing 10 to 1 in order to achieve the same outcome and firing that much artillery puts a huge strain on the whole supply system and makes it vulnerable to enemy action.

But you wrong. Russia also has many guided artillery and quided rockets and guided missiles and guided mortars but just like Ukraine not all troops/squads have them, some have them and some don't. Just like how even if Ukraine gets 100 himars systems tomorrow morning not all Ukrainian squads will have them. War has always been that way. Use common sense and stop making your bias feelings get in the way of rational thinking. At least 2 destroyed captured himars systems have already literally been shown at close up and many more have already been destroyed within Ukraine held territory, this goes to show they are not magic weapons and Russia does have very accurate guided projectiles to destroy them too. HIMARS and the M270 - a tracked 12 rocket (2 module) version have a range of 50 MILES (about 80 km) with the ammo the US has supplied. They said they aren't going to supply the rockets with 183 miles. So 50 MILES is why Ukraine can hit those ammo dumps. A range of 50km wouldn't be as helpful for this. Of course dumb rockets with shorter ranges are also available, but that's not what the buzz is about.
@technoartfest87082 жыл бұрын
You guys are unaware that ammo depots can spread in many places too? What would happen if instead of deploying all ammo iinstead of one place , deploy it in 50x different places? Ukraine don't have as many missiles to do such kind of operation , aside they need to find first the new hiding places and if russia move the places constantly. and lets say store it in TRUCKS containers.. and deploy thousands of them through all t he rear line , it means that Russia can signifincantly reduce the effectivity of HIMARS to close to zero ,by spreading ammo and hidding better their important places. HIMARS can't be used against soldiers to win a war , would need millions of them to target moving soldier sand still will miss more of their hits. aside Russian Tornado rocket artillery google for it ,do something similar to HIMARS and have 120km to 200km range. with satellite precision guidance.. So RUssia have their own HIMARS too ,lets not forget about that.. and have cruise missiles too ,that are even more powerful ,longer range and hit harder. and a strong airforce. Himars alone will not make Ukraine defeat Russia. you need a complete army with a lot of experience and fully armed with all kind of weapons for that. Only a NATO major scale invasion with everything they have ,including airforce and modern tanks ,could push back Russia back ,anything less will not work.
@MrDubyadee12 жыл бұрын
@@technoartfest8708 What you are describing is what the Ukrainians and western armies do. Western armies have loads more trucks, robust communications and decentralized decision making authority. The Russians depend on railheads and centralized dumps. They only have enough trucks to supply units within 90 miles of a railhead. It is very difficult for them to change this because they are so centralized and top down and because they’d need a lot more trucks and much better communications (to support decentralization). It would take several years and a major change of culture to pull this off. It would probably also require the development of a professional NCO corps as well.

Russia has suffered somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 combat deaths and up to 100,000 total casualties. It started with a tiny 190,000 personnel. Sure, Russia probably has more artillery pieces than all of NATO combined. Hell, the Soviet Union probably manufactured enough munitions for a 1000 years of war, but that artillery is inaccurate, slow, and short-range. Blowing up apartment buildings with dumb shelling may be scary for the populace, but it's no match for what the HIMARS does, and its military usefulness is limited. In Luhansk sheer weight of artillery won for the time being. But once Ukraine has one million troops and dozens of HIMARS and hundreds of other NATO weapons, well, Russia is screwed. It hasn't done well so far, and things will not become easier for the invaders.

Ukraine likely has a million troops since they mobilized at the begginning of the war; however, there was always 2 questions. 1. How would they outfit them? 2. How will Highly motivated, but untrained, conscripts deal with the "trained" Russian Army. Thankfully in the last several months both those questions have been answered. Much of the aid given to Ukraine from the world has been rifles , helmets, night vision, and other infantry gear that can outfit large portions of the UA military. Meanwhile , where as before only Poland trained Ukraine troops, now the UA is being trained in Poland (in even greater numbers), The UK, Germany, The united States, and other places. With the UK alone touting that they train up to 10k Ukrainian Troops in less than a few months. Assuming that the other nations train half as many soldiers as the UK (which would be a boldly understating assumption) then that would mean the UA would have around 25k trained soldiers added to their military every 60 days which, while the Russians cannot deploy additional BTG's to Ukraine w/o sending in conscripts and admit that this is a war. So I definitely give the UA an advantage in the long run with it increasing as more time passes
