I have lived here since 94. DO NOT MOVE HERE. The ONLY people pushing living here are real estate investors because the market is white hot for them. On one side of the road you have multimillion-dollar properties. Two blocks away from you you will have drug dealing slums. They will be shootouts and there will be meth labs and there will be a lot of crime right around the corner from you. And it will pick up every summer and every spring break. So make sure that when you go outside to do whatever it is you need to do that you are prepared to enter city life. I'm originally from New York City so I grew up on the streets and I'm very well prepared for it more so than my Panama City compatriots. Also understand that Panama City Beach and Panama City are only one bridge apart and many people think they are the same area because people will cross that bridge every day. However despite doing business across the bridge frequently 90% of people hate crossing that bridge so if you happen to have a friend on the other side of the bridge? That's no longer your friend. Every time I've ever met someone on the other side of the bridge we refused to speak to each other anymore. Tribalism. They won't come see me and I won't come see them. Not to mention the cost of living is through the roof. You will get peanuts but you will pay thousands of dollars for those peanuts. The money does not get reinvested into this town because nothing is mom and pop in this town anymore That all ended at about 2,000 to 2005 when the big companies came in. Now everything you buy get shipped to whomever owns it out of town or even out of the country. Margaritaville, or whatever you go to eat at is not based here nor owned here. And the restaurants or bars that you go to such as Tootsie's orchid lounge? Well the locals like me have all work security there and watch them sell cocaine right at the door. That's right I'm a personal witness to this. Just like I witnessed the Russian mob help close down club La Viva. But they are going to tell you these kinds of stories. They aren't going to tell you how the government is corrupt and being paid off by these drug dealers to keep the town this way. You are moving into a rat's nest and you will be victimized almost immediately upon arrival. We call it pay county. It's the black hole of America and once you come here you can't leave. I've been trying to leave since 1994 just like so many other thousands of people. Hotel California baby you can check in, but you can never leave.

you mention the nearest metropolitan area beings Tallahassee. Is there any medium-sized towns between PCB and there? Like the town PCB to PC across the bridge? Or is it just small town to small town between them? Just curious, as we're looking to move there after a vacation coming up when we select rental options for leases. Factoring in everything :D

Lots.... Apalachicola, st joe, Chipley, blountstown, marianna, quincy and dozens of small towns. I'm from the area. If you're looking for excitement then stay in the city. It's all farmland and swamps and people who don't appreciate screwy tourists.

I'm moving here in January because it's cheaper than Miami. I still plan on moving to Miami within 6-9 months, but this seems perfect right now for the affordability factor. It's probably good that I won't have as many distractions either & can focus on work.

I live here. And I have to say. It's overwhelming living here. If you think about cost it's the same on the beach and across the bridge. Every restaurant is usually so busy it's not very easy to go eat. And quality isn't that great. The heat is ridiculous. The traffic is horrendous. Mostly your working alot so you only have 2 days a week to either rest or enjoy the beach. But tourists are everywhere so it's like always a battle with them over everything. Housing is ridiculous you can't really find long term rentals. So buying is important or you pay out the wazoo. The hospital is horrible also.

thanks for sharing your experience. My family and I have long considered having a 2nd home there, I even picked up my real estate license in FL to represent us. But just like everywhere else, I've seen the prices skyrocket out that way for a 3/2 condo. That's the name of the game!

The fam used to visit Panama from Ft. Rucker when I was a kid in the 60's. Different then, we rented a trailer for the weekend and we bought bamboo spears and speared blue crab from a small pier. Was a lot of fun. I also remember some carnival looking place whenever we entered town. Never got to go there, and I don't think it exists now. I believe Miracle Strip was the name of it. Nice place.

We have lived in PC for a year now. One other con that hopefully will change soon. If you are traveling anywhere via airline, there are very few direct flights. Chances are you will have at least one connecting flight to get to your destination. We absolutely love PC and the surrounding areas.

We have had atleast 3 shark attacks in the area this past summer & several more dying from people not paying attention to the flag system on the beach. Financially it was the worst decision we ever made moving here. We are absolutely drowning in debt. Jobs don’t pay to afford the cost of living which rises every year as a renter, not to mention that we all pay more fees to eat out. We are saving to get out. It’s a trap.

I love this area but way too overpopulated in the summer and spring, a lot of disrespectful young people, that dont know how to act. Locals get so over it here, its like everyone calls eachother, and meets in the same location then complain about how busy it is, i get the feeling they think PCB is the only place to have a few drinks and go to the beach.

Local here. DO NOT COME HERE. Pay County doesn't play around! The crime, drugs, world record divorce rate, corrupt politicians that are always going to jail, and the fact that every dollar you spend get sent to a corporation out of town and never helps a local here, while are we living in poverty one block away from multi-million dollar homes. That's why they are being robbed so much. Crime and shootings happen everyday and it's only getting worse. I've been here since 94 I've been visiting since 85 and was one of the tourists who eventually moved down here way before you guys made that decision. And my family's been living here since the 1800s. We settled this land originally. I can tell you so much more about the Russian mob who runs this place and many other things but it would take way too long. If your mind is made up you're going to come anyway and there's nothing I can do to save you You've been warmed.

Lived in PC my whole life and think its very overrated, especially with the party scene gone after multiple hurricanes destroying clubs, the cost of living is through the roof even on the east side of the bridge outside of PCB city limits, infrastructure is being overwhelmed mainly in the form of traffic, and their really aint any high paying jobs outside of medical field and real estate. Lacks the sustainability of a bigger city and is mainly a place to visit or retire to. I feel like their are other coastal communities with more to offer like mobile or pensacola just up the road.

You must not be talking to the right locals more like condo owners. When you tourist are gone we party and gather together. You just do not see it and most try not to form bonds with tourist. We need you here for your money but most of us think u r a plague. We are happiest during Fall and Winter and late Spring before dreaded Summer hits but after hated Spring Break.

So true. I live down the road in Fort Walton Beach. The amount of tourists that flood the area from March through September is absurd. It completely ruins the beach living experience. I live 1 mile away from a pristine beach but don’t go to it at all during tourist season. They come here in droves leaving their brains at home. If you have a boat it’s hard to even enjoy that thanks to all the many rental pontoon places that rent out to anyone regardless of whether they have any experience or not. They flood into crab island recklessly piloting those crappy pontoons near other watercraft and swimmers.
