@paradise_valley
@paradise_valley 2 жыл бұрын
@@draetonalimoffatt8780 what’s the difference for you? The guitar part is the melodic and rhythmic hook, and is the most memorable part of the song, not simply a unique phrase or unfinished idea that is played by the guitar player. Sure it’s just a couple notes but now we get into a discussion of semantics and what a riff/lick means to you as opposed to what it’s regarded as by the majority of listeners who aren’t caught up in the music scene. I get it, it’s slightly annoying, I’m a guitarist too, and as you seem to be passionate about music too I would say don’t get caught up in this sort of thing as some see it as pretentious. Fair argument though.

3) Citizen Erased - Muse Something about it just scratches a primal itch in my brain that I didn't even know I had until that riff blasted through my skull. 2) Jimi Hendrix - Manic Depression Had to go for this over some of the arguably more popular ones, just because of the fun slides and chromatics he throws in, which just make the riff hit a little different. And in true WatchMojo style, some honourable mentions: • Layla - Eric Clapton (acoustic and/or studio version) • Money for nothing - Dire Straits • Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas • Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson And finally, my personal number one... *ALLL ABOOOAAAARDDDD!* Every riff in Crazy Train is spectacular, and so masterfully constructed with such awesome passion and technique, making it impossible for me to not pick it as my number one. ... Not that anybody really cares. Lol.

What a hilarious Stern clip! Everybody's bringing up some great ideas. I'm thinking globally here: 1. Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry. Rock and roll would have been very different without Chuck and this timeless gem. 2. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience. I can't even imagine the impact this opening riff must have had in early 1967, pre-Sgt. Pepper, with Penny Lane and The Supremes topping the charts. 3. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana. After a decade of hair metal, this riff hit hard. Like Purple Haze, the guitar intro said, "Things are about to get very different in music."

@@hy42069 Im not so sure nirvana got anymore lucky than any band thats ever been popular. People always say nirvana was overrated bc Kurt wasnt a great guitarist (or even a good one) but he was a great song writer and wrote incredible lyrics. Frankly if bands today would try to do more with less we would get something great out of it. Just because a song is hard to play doesnt mean its automatically good, music theory is great but a low level of music theory knowledge can make you forget that music is supposed to SOUND good and not just use theory

That phasing effect you mention is called "poly metrics"! 2 overlapping time sigs!!!! A lot of Prog rock groups do this. Rush and Yes most famously. What's really cool about poly metrics is that drummers can pull it off on the drum set alone. Example would be playing 3/4 with hands and 4/4 with feet. We are cool like that. The phrasing will always meet up on certain bars and makes for some challinging and cool sounding effects.

What drives me nuts about lists like this (and greatest songs of all time, guitarists of all time, etc.) is that things from the distant past are always graded higher. Same with vintage guitars: older equals better. I won't dispute anyone's list, because it's all subjective. But it's annoying how many people immediately look back 50 years or so as if that's the default, somewhere you HAVE to turn to without question. With all the amazing players---old and new---we're still talking about Iron Man?!? Smoke on the Water?!? (Okay, maybe I am disputing someone's list). I just wish more people felt okay with saying players and songs from recent years just might match or outshine older counterparts. End of rant.

Also, Howard Stern isn't a guitar player. I don't think he knows anything about music theory. Yet, people will flock to him and defend him because he's had a radio show for decades and that somehow makes his opinions more valuable than someone who has spent time with the guitar as an instrument? If anyone else treated the caller the way Stern does in this clip, an argument would ensue. And yeah I get it, it's for shock value. Doesn't mean I have to like it or respect anything that comes from his mouth.

I think part of it is that you never know how well something is going to age until it has a chance to start aging, and people are trying to avoid making statements that might be really cringy 10 years from now. (The other, more irritating part is that people tend to apply the idea of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” to pop culture and see no reason to expand their horizons when they’ve found something they like.)

You are absolute correct. Honestly I like a song like Paranoid, but from today's perspective this is at max a mediocre song and I like it. That shit was crazy in the 60s/70s, but the first song kinda making it feel out of place on my playlist is just the shit production, which is fine, it's got a vibe. But people be fucking swearing on shit, like it's the best thing ever created, just because it's old. Still don't get me wrong I like Black Sabbath. But nowadays there are so many fucking amazing, skilled, creative, hard working guitarists out there that have been writing crazy sick riffs and solos for decades and still on every damn riff tier list you find a riff by fucking Black Sabbath.
