I think he is the best in the current era of f1, and since Schumacher have left in 2006 ( because his 2010-2012 return was irrelevant for wdc battles) there was nobody better than Alonso up until Verstappen came in. I know people will come here and argue about Hamilton and his titles but none of Hamilton s championship winning campaign compares to the ones 2005-2006 Alonso had, he never been through this kind of battles when the driver mattered more than the car, the stress, the unpredictable moments… he had just car too fast to can have any real threat.

@@idk-mg9rh Lewis + Dennis + basically the whole McLaren team, who were invested in making Lewis a F1 champion since his early years.Also, _beat_ would be a stretch, given they ended up tied in points. As Rosberg said, the weakness of Alonso are paddock politics, which costed him 2007 championship, and probably all of Vettel championships when he was offered the RB car.

I think Fernando is one of the top 4 or 5 of all time (I think it’s impossible to choose only 1 GOAT). If Jim Clark can be considered the best ever by some, despite having “only” 2 championships, then Alonso should be in the GOAT conversation as well.

Always difficult to discuss about different eras but in general terms Alonso should be more or less in a Top 10 drivers in F1. Fangio, Senna, Schumacher, Clark, Prost, Lauda, Hamilton, Alonso, Piquet, etc.

I haven't had any doubts in my mind about Alonso being the greatest driver of this century. I don't care about the number of WDC. I see his racecraft, his instint, how he has destroyed pretty much every team mate he had. Hamilton has had a lot of issues when the car is not exactly how he likes it and Vettel hasn't been tested enough in adverse conditions to show the material he's made of. It has been only until this 2024 season that I started to shift towards Verstappen as the top 1 driver of the century. I think Verstappen is probably quicker, but Alonso's racing IQ, racecraft and determination would make it a close fight.

Well when he moved to Mc Laren in 2007 that was a great move, that car was the best in that season... if going to the team with the best car is bad I don't know what he could have done. And the move to Ferrari was good too, he fought for the title 3 years... It was the 2nd move to Mc Laren what was the worst move in history, and Alpine after that and who knows about Aston Martin now...

1:55 Are you sure about that?! Fernando can't stand Seb. Seb has always admired and joked around with Fernando, but Fernando is quite bitter about Seb having the best car 4 years in a row and being a runner-up to him 3 times. Nico was spot on here 6:48. Also the toxic environment he would often create in teams didn't help at all either. He had a knack for bringing morale to the floor in many of the teams he was in when things weren't going well. He's a lot better in that sense after his comeback, but the environment he helped create at the 2nd Renault stint, both McLaren stint and at Ferrari were really, really toxic. And I hate using that word - toxic - because I think it's overused, but in this particular case it is very appropriate. Mind you that Fernando is actually my favourite driver, but I'm very aware of his flaws.

Fernando and Sebastian are friends. Whatever fake narrative you're creating, you are on your own. We don't really know the whole truth about "creating a toxic environment". If a team who is supposed to be world class and peak and fighting for championships keeps building shit cars, the whole team morale suffers.

Alonso created so toxic enviroment around him that Mclaren wanted him back, Renault wanted him back and Ferrari tried to renew his contract to 2019 before he left the team in 2014, not bc of a toxic enviroment, just bc he thought ferrari was not gonna make a good car to compete for the championship
