The global watchmaking industry has changed since the introduction of the smartphone and as demand for fitness trackers and smartwatches grow. Legacy watchmakers, like Fossil, have had to adapt and give customers new reasons to keep timepieces on their wrists. The company has been planning for the future by bringing its own smartwatches to market, initiating a multi-year turnaround plan and focusing on growing markets in China and India. But will that be enough?

You've reduced this short analysis to the point of absurdity (as the video states, Fossil does make smartwatches. Regarding smartwatches, they are seen as "tech;" many/most smartwatch wearers want a watch that pairs seamlessly with their particular device, primarily a smartphone).

I have been a watch collector for over 40yrs. I currently have over 50 Fossil watches including all of the Star Wars, Star Trek & Harry Potter Theme sets. One of the coolest things about the Fossil brand is some of the boxes are as cool as or even cooler than the watches. I would be very sad to see them go out of business.

I bought my late husband a beautiful Fossil tonneau around '90. He previously wore a Movado so he was fussy. I believe his son has the watch. I recently bought 3 pre-owned Fossils that are classic styles which I believe should be the benchmark or trademark of the brand. I will never own a smart watch. There are many traditionalists like myself out there who prefer classic style watches. Are you listening Costas? Touvlo.

The only issue with mechanical watches is that they require a overhaul every few years as a minimum Although some makers will say to wait until the watch starts to run too slow/fast and then it might be several years. Many people don't realize that when they're buying a Rolex it has to cleaned, lubed and parts replaced every few to several years.

As a former fossil employee there are a few things missed in this story. 1) they were way ahead of their time with smart watches. They experimented with Bluetooth well before apple new how to spell watch. The development was shelved. 2)The real issue with their decline was their rapid success in early 2010. The company hires a lot of bright young talent and those ppl are poor business makers. 3) the cell phone was more of a reason for the watch decline. And it was the reason why others were looking into smart watch design. Finally two fun facts 1) no B roll of the Headquarters in Richardson. 2) good luck finding a picture of Kosta. Pictures of him were no allowed.

@@Storm0Castle They were both good at making products that were desirable among the consumers they targeted. Like Nokia, Fossil's branding in their heyday was outstanding. Like Nokia, they produced entry level products designed for consumers not wanting to spend a lot of money (Nokia also had a higher end line, but that is besides the point...both brands heavily targeted people my age when we were in high school and both were wildly successful.) Like Nokia, they had an extremely successful sales model that relied heavily on retail store sales. Nokia definitely made some legendary phones that, from a ruggedness perspective, could be compared to a Rolex Caliber 3135, or, from an innovation perspective, the Zenith El Primero or JLC Caliber 101. But that is kind of veering off course. The bottom line is that Nokia and Fossil both had a strong market presence and were at one point both ubiquitous brands. Then, things changed, and Nokia could not adapt, and Fossil is finding themselves in a similar situation.

Mhm i have a Casio watch, it's a Tough Solar, so it's not a G-Shock, but given how robust it has been, i don't see why i should get a more reinforced one? I love that it combines passive energy harvesting, a mechanical dial (without a jumpy seconds hand, which i HATE), and digital features, but it's just not connected enough. I'd love my watch to inform me of notifications, show Spotify title, and allow minimal Spotify control. I considered getting a Bulova, but maybe when i'm no longer poor someday. If ever. Really not that much of a loss, i don't really like fancy things to begin with. I also bought a cheap automatic fully mechanical for $12 from China like 8 years ago, and it's actually been fun. I cracked the glass on it though, but i am curious to take it apart anyway, so maybe that's par for the course. Not getting around to though, and i need to order a new glass. Also curious about trying to waterproof it. It's kinda perfect for the curious, because if the disassembly and reassembly goes terribly wrong, well not much lost, i've even seen a watchmaker endorse that route to the curious, not sure if this was Mr_Horologist or Chr0n0glide. I think ultimately people who used to buy inexpensive "fashion" watches, might just be buying either direct from China today, because if it's gonna be junk, at least it might as well be super cheap? Besides smart watches and such. Or they start chasing random rebrands like MVMT who bought their way into the Instagram hype machine. I'm also thinking of making my own smartwatch, with a clone Nokia 3310 display, or maybe even a genuine Nokia display, i have both kinds at hand, so who knows. Kind of sitting it out, shunning the effort :D Was thinking of basing it on Nordic nRF51822 processor with Bluetooth LE, i should have a couple here somewhere. I also got a $5 Mediatek based smartwatch from China, which is really a feature phone in disguise, but it didn't take much to fall apart and isn't really worth repairing, and the reverse engineered SDK that i was hoping to use kinda failed to materialise last i looked... admitted several years ago. It's a little on the power hungry side though, which is not quite ideal, which is something i hope i could do better combining the nRF with a Nokia LCD. People make smartwatches with those expensive Sharp Memory LCDs, and yet you remember that a phone with a 550mAh battery lasted 12 days on standby while constantly displaying time and maintaining cellular connection, with much less efficient electronics than today. The Nokia LCD really doesn't look all that bad and isn't that inefficient.

Around 15 years ago, I got a Fossil watch as a gift. It was broken around 1 year later, tried to find someone who can fix it, but without success. Watch stores workers told me, they can’t fix these watches. It was sad, as it was a beautiful watch. I can see, why Fossil is going away… if the quality is bad, customers will buy other watches.

I've got a budget fossil smartwatch, so I thought I'd clarify why it's such a pain to own one: -battery life so short, I gave up using it as a watch except as a heartrate monitor when jogging. -GPS fails to start 99% of time, so again, only heartrate -whenever a software update is pending, can't measure heartrate, says "failed to start measurement" -induction charger needs constant fiddling finding an angle in which it works -I need to know what's my heartrate, so every time I jog, must set user gesture to active when tilted, cause it's set to off daily! -after a workout, the green light of the heartrate meter keeps working, draining the battery. Probably software bug. -when I jog, there are stupid motivation screens that prevent heartrate display for around 25 seconds each time. This happens because my 'goals' can't be switched off and I set them to be very high, but they reset to newbie setting every day. To sum it all up- my life with this watch- standing on the street cursing while waiting for heartrate or satellite fix, cursing when leaving for jogging only to get the 'can't start measurement' error.. it's clear folks- I'm not a person who owns a watch. This watch owns me and I work for it full time 🤦‍♂😢

Thankfully they're better now. Been using Fossil gen 6 for some time, the so-called stupid motivation screens doesn't exist (or at least I've never seen it). Battery lasts for a ~1.5-2 days (just like any other smartwatch tbh) The design is better than 99% of other smartwatches, and for me at least since I waste a lot of time commuting with bus, it's really useful to see notifications without taking out my phone and risk having it stolen.

But hey- you've got another model altogether, so obviously your experience would be different... Anyway thanks for commenting.

I really enjoyed this journalism here. I was a 90’s kid; everyone in junior high wanted their own Fossil watch to help them get the girls (I had a blue dial Big Tick and I loved it). I girlfriend in college bought me a Fossil wallet that was another excellent product. It’s a real bummer to see them struggle; I think their best hope is to commit to becoming more of a high end manufacturer and then target my age group again. Lots of us have moved into collecting watches and enjoying the pride in certain models. The idea of having a handmade, mechanical Fossil would be a lot like seeing Michael Keaton as Batman again!

My favorite watch that I own right now is literally the watch at 11:32 in this video, except the face on mine is black instead of white. In fact, when I bought this watch, I initially saw it with a blue face, and I said to the saleswoman, "you know if you had this with a black face I'd buy it right now..." only for her to walk me over to another display case with the black version 🤣 I ended up getting that and another watch for like 100 bucks with a promotion they were doing at the time, could not be more satisfied! Hopefully their smart watches will continue to improve as well. Until now I haven't been quite compelled into getting one, but I'm sure in time they'll hook me :p

I enjoy mechanical watches too, but not even a $20,000 "supreme chronometer" from Rolex will keep time as well as a $15 Casio. Supreme Chronometers I think are guaranteed to something like +6/-4 seconds a day. Gazillions of inexpensive quartz watches won't lose much more than that a month. The beauty of mechanicals is in their intricacy, engineering, and simple joy... not their timekeeping, necessarily ;-) Then again, noone needs an accurate watch on their wrist in 2023, so it's a moot point.

Smart watches aren't really a watch but a scaled down smart phone you wear on your wrist and as such have about the same useful life as a smart phone. My Samsung 3 smart watch was $399 new in August 2020. I bought one in refurbished like-new condition a few months ago for $50 which included a 3 year warranty. People don't wear a smart watch to convey wealth or status or to serve as a subtle reminder of the wearer's dedication to punctuality and how the passage time matters. They wear it so they don't need to fish their phone out of their pocket when someone calls or to measure their heart rate. They are a tool not an heirloom and the novelty will wear off. Classic time pieces that look good and hold their value will always have a market.

Make a great understated quality watch without adding the "brand-tax" and/or the "fancy packaging-tax" and you'll do fine.

I'd say their doing too good.. The prices of quality watches have skyrocketed in the last 10 years. For example Rolex's Submariner or Daytona whose prices have doubled, you simply can't buy and the waiting lists are redicilous. On the other hand an ever evolving fake watch market has improved so much so that there are some of the so called "super clone" replicas out there that are 99% the same as the original.. In a few years even a Rolex dealer won't be able to recognize one from the other. What does that tell us if a watch that the Rolex sells for 10 000 $ can be manufactured and sold for a grand, and the quality is almost the same?.

I used to work in a fossil flagship store few years ago. The designs and collections were becoming very repetitive at some point, made in China crap with a lot a after sales returns. The smartwatch was a great idea, but the autonomy was ridiculously low (1 day decreasing to 6hour after a year of use). The leather used for their bag was poor quality as well. All of that for a fairly high pricetag.
