Definitely the missing blow off valve, inertia or flying debris from breaking a Jersey barrier in half with the front of the truck at wide open throttle had nothing to do with it... Way to go George entertaining stuff right there.

Chip of jersey barrier induction when it broke the wall? But compressor surge makes more sense. No blow off valve and the surge, that shrieking noise is hammering the wheels back and forth with extreme force. The bearings aren't designed for oscillating lateral loads.

I've seen that type of damage on crashed turbo cars before. When you hit a wall, you hit a wall that's a tremendous amount of deceleration imparted on a spinning parts with a tremendous amount of kinetic energy.

With that turbine spinning at 100,000+ rpm is a giant gyroscope. Usually the heaviest forces are braking and acceleration which run parallel with the axis of rotation. I have a strong suspicion that when George hit the wall the lateral force on the car and turbine (huge decelerating force) caused that very small amount of play in the bearing to allow the inertia of the turbine to induce an extreme force in the opposite direction (reactionary force). That would have caused the shaft to try and rotate laterally (not spinning, rotational axis looking down) and twist the bearing in the case enough for the the case to crack. Aren't those both journal bearing turbos? If so I don't think you need to be running oil restrictors on them. Perhaps that's why you burnt up the one.

I dont use a restrictor but I do use a brake line for my oil feed.

the back Side of a compressor wheel is designed in a way that it will cancel out the axial forces of the chargepressure... the air acts on the back of the wheel... if you have bad pressure spikes the bearings have to absorbe these spikes --> short life for those

George has it right somewhat; as boost goes up, you're turning the comp wheel into a screw and it wants to move forward. Thrust washer could have taken a toll/beating and then the turbine shaft goes back and forth with some effort. Soon as you see that it's not spinning, it very likely can be a thrust issue (though a bent shaft can also do that). Weakened thrust washer plus continued limiter lickin' can push the rotating assy forwards/backwards enough. If you mark where the comp wheel and nut are in relation to the turbine wheel, you can get away with the "quick n dirty" balance method.

Therory is good. Ya ball bearings can not take side load. So blow off valve or tapered roller bearings are needed.

That turbo was destroyed by the G forces resulting from the impact with the wall at INDY. All the damage is consistent with the angle of impact and the WOT. Basically your Turbo suffered whiplash and a concussion!

Take the restrictor out of the passenger turbo, journal bearing turbos don't use restrictors, they need all the oil they can get, that could of been why it went bad only ball bearing uses 1.0mm oil restrictors
