How would Christianity even exist, in any form, in this timeline? As you said, the Jesus story is inextricably tied with Roman rule in Judea and I don't think any breakaway messianic cults (of which there were many OTL and probably would be many ITTL) would bear more than a passing resemblance to Christianity. Similarly, I doubt Islam exists in the first place without Christianity; Islam's goal was to produce a "purified" or "uncorrupted" Abrahamic faith, which wouldn't make sense in a world without Christianity.
@christopherplant61786 жыл бұрын

@MogofWar6 жыл бұрын
Judaism and Christianity were not the only Abrahamic faiths at the dawn of Islam. Christianity or some variant might have still reached Arabia.
@logancarlile88956 жыл бұрын
MrTeniguafez Jesus was only executed by the Romans because the Jewish council kept asking them to do it. They didn’t have the legal authority to execute someone, so they had to appeal to the romans to do it, which they eventually did. If you accept Jesus as a historical figure, it’s entirely possible the Jewish establishment would have executed him. In this sense it’s still entirely possible for a group of people to pop up worshipping this guy who died for his beliefs And your idea of Islam is ridiculous. Islam as we know it did not exist when Muhammed conquered Arabia, and in fact many agree it was just a local interpretation of various Arabic gods mixed with abrahamic beliefs that spread from the Levant. Muhammed’s conquests were spurred on by an early appearance of the Black Plague, which destabilized urban areas. Arabia was not an urban area and thus was mostly unaffected from the plague, early Islamic conquests were spurred more by opportunity and a 1/1000000 political situation, not by religious fervor because the religion of Islam did not fully exist at this time. It only really started to solidify into a distinct, separate abrahamic faith when the Arabs conquered Syria from the Byzantines. It was not designed as a “pure” form of Christianity, and is a coagulation of so many factors it’s impossible to list them all. Islam as it exists today, meaning the various beliefs and traditions often associated with it, only really *began* to develop in the 9th century.

@h3lblad36 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he didn't cover an expanded Carthage at all. Carthage would have likely done a huge amount of trading in the east. It's very possible that that Christians could end up spreading across the Mediterranean simply by way of Paul (and/or Peter) heading to Carthage rather than Rome. Christianity in such a timeline would then have had a much larger role in Africa, though a significantly reduced role in Northern Europe.
@clerickolter6 жыл бұрын
I posted on this but they were not conquerors likely with Egypt they would open trade, used intermarriage and the 'possible threat' of war the unpleasant alternative to the former peaceful options. And Carthage would have expanded trade to the British Isles and other regions I'm sure just without the military conquest Rome depended on if peace failed so would have faired better. Take the Picts they liked the goods Rome had and some things but were disrespected odds are Carthage would have a couple trade towns and cities and respected the local rulers and faiths, focusing on making money. But would also have armies and a navy to show strength enough to be respected as friends and not weak.

Since the soldiers were trained to fight humans and not birds, they only had a kill count of around 15 during the first campaign. A second campaign was launched later, where they were slightly more successful, but still surrendered to the emus. After the failure of both anti-emu campaigns, the Australian government (now secretly run by the emus, btw) decided to put a bounty on emus instead of using their own men and resources. In a way, Rome's invasion of Greek and the Levant was a god-send to the Greek city people, who by the mid 200s were devolving into the same conditions that lead to Alexander the Great. Just imagine another great Greek leader, knowning Alexander reached "the end of the world" travelling east, decided to just go west.

Granted Rome was better than all of them and even in the face of Rome conquested they refused to cooperate, but we are talking about a world without Rome in which any one of those 3 factions could have united Greece and marched westward, especially the Aetolians, who in many ways created a polity similar to the Roman Republic.

So basically Europe is split in between North and South, with the south being divided in between eastern greek mediterranean, and western Carthaginian Mediterranean, both southern civilisations being centres of trade, knowledge and culture, whilst the North develops as a mosaic of tribes and kingdoms, worshiping their own pantheons. I like how this is going...

I don't think Christianity would have taken off at all without Rome because the narrative of foreign oppression was so powerful in its initial stages. To an independent Judea this would just not apply. At most, I believe Christianity would become merely a minor school of thought in Judaism. Most likely it would never survive if it occurred at all.

Not to mention even if it did, it would have taken MUCH longer to spread outward, having to convert dozens of kingdoms and tribes, with each conversion being slightly different from the others. If it DID emerge, it would have been largely restricted to the eastern Mediterranean and it would have been FAR more diverse than in our timeline. Imagine missionaries tailoring their message to fit with the Arabs, the Greeks, the Persians, the Armenians, etc.

I think, as a Jew, that you skipped one very, very, very important factor about Jesus and all of that: We would still have the Beit HaMikdash. Without the diaspora, we would have remained a temple-focused religion, and have had a central state with something to rally around. I can honestly see a strange kind of small empire of Judea forming in the area, focused on defending the land of Israel and the temple, while serving as a gathering place for our faith. Who knows? It might have gone on to become a notable power in the region and the general Eastern Med.

This is honestly making me want to play Dungeons & Dragons or Dangerous Journeys using Gary Gygax's post-Greyhawk setting, _Mythus_ - a.k.a., "The Epic of Ærth," which is set on a magical, hollow-world version of medieval Earth that, among other things, lacks monotheistic religions, includes fantastical lands such as Atlantis and Lemuria, and has a direct connection to the "Phæree" realm. On Ærth the Roman Empire still rose and fell, but the world of 1018 ᴀᴀғ is a bit different from our own; the "British Isles" remain predominately Celtic with little-to-no Anglo-Saxon influence, Egypt is still ruled by the pharaohs, and the most common language is "Trade Phoenician," among other things…

Wouldn't the Persians and Greeks have filled Rome's shoes and have built roads and improved ships on their own? Rome was HEAVILY influenced by them.
@robertjarman37036 жыл бұрын
Probably not so much expanding as west as they did, but that task would likely have happened with the Carthaginians. The northern tribes had already in the previous few hundred years been adopting many and quick improvements in technology and social organizations, such as the use of iron, good chariots, and complex trade, powerful chiefs, and full fledged cities and towns. What we call civilization sprang up all around the world, and there is no reason to think that it wouldn't happen without Rome in the North. Trade would still happen, especially when using river systems, and ideas would still spread. Also, FYI, the Persians were no longer that Persian at this point politically, they were the Parthians, later the Sassanians, both heavily influenced by Hellenization.
@Vitalis946 жыл бұрын
Yeah, of course, but Persians or Greeks would have very little incentive to expand into Central Europe, for example. Expansion into the Balkans or Italian peninsula would be the limit of their conquest, IMHO.

they weren't interested with war with the gauls who dominated northern & central europe, since they were focused on the trade riches of the mediterranean & sea lanes, it may have happened though it isn't likely, Carthage may have spread influence up to Albion but they were largely focused on trade enclaves & were unlikely to have conquered.

Hey Cody, I have an alternative history suggestion. What if Persia won the Greek-Persian wars? Would this have affected the Greek states, the Mediterranean and the rise of Rome? I could imagine no rise of Alexandria the Great and the abolishment of slavery under Persian rule. What else do you predict? I think this would be interesting to explore! Especially, since Persia was known for their tolerance and progression in maths, science and philosophy.

Loving this mini series that you're making, I'm excited to see the next one. While it looks like you'll be focusing on Islamic influence and Eastern Invasions, I am curious on your thoughts about Carthage at this point in the timeline and onward. Historical Spoilers Ahead? I'm not too familiar with the Moor Invasions in Northern Africa and the Middle East (anyone can correct me if I'm wrong about whether or not it was an actual invasion) that helped spread the Islamic faith at the time. I would have to guess that if Carthage was still around and the Moors progressed, there would be resistance, resulting in a war against empires; Having said that, I wonder if Carthage would hold them back with their famed Numidian Cavalry and War Elephants, dampening Muslim influence throughout Spain and into Western Europe. If that's the case, would Carthage's religion spread throughout Europe overtime, as they influence the barbarian tribes through their trade. With the western empire being naval-based, maybe they could stretch farther along Europe and Africa, colonizing the coastal regions to build trade routes and change the continents like the vikings did in the 10th-11th century, this is assuming Carthage didn't conquer the Hellenistic nations and grew too large that it fell. This is also assuming that the Moors didn't succeed or even decide to conquer Eastern Europe and continue to spread the Islamic faith from there. Also if either religions spread into barbarian tribes, I'm sure there would be resistance as well. I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this as well. Something about cause and effect scenarios just fascinate me, especially in terms of history. I also think Carthage is pretty underrated and deserves a little spotlight, but you could probably tell :D .

Interesting, I think the Iberian peninsula would have been culturally integrated/assimilated to Carthage's culture and might result in Southern Europe being more trade-focused in general.

@@zhcultivator do you think that would advance diplomatic efforts and reduce the amount of military actions throughout the Mediterranean then? And throughout the world once the exploration age arrives? Britain would have ditched their pussy ally France and probably salvaged the remains of the British Empire. WW2 would probably have been avoided, at least on the European front. Or if WW2 still happened, the new Axis would have been Britain, Deutschland, and Spaghetti land. France might be ballsy enough to declare war on Deutschland, but they would get their asses kicked and promptly surrender. Poland stills gets gangbanged by Deutschland and Soviet Union, but Britain doesn't help. There's a chance that Britain convinces America to join the Axis, unless they get {{Pearl Harbored}} first. The Cold War would definitely look a whole lot different.

@@comicsans1689 Poland didn't need to get stomped, they could've just given German Danzig and Poznan back and they could've reattained autonomy under German protection.
