I'm sure people do Yu-Gi-Oh references because it's more popular than magic because a lot of people watched the cartoon as a kid and it's pretty much the only piece of media (outside of video games) where the characters play a card game.

The thing is that the swedish translations never got past the scene where all the Reis were destroyed so I didn't get to read the ending. I found out about The End Of Evangelion some time later and streamed it illegally. I understood jack shit but Asukas death traumatised me. Despite the fact that I was way too young to understand all of the underlying philosophy and themes in NGE It still taught me about shit like isolation, sexuality, trauma and it was my introduction to homosexuality in media.
