Advice from someone living in Thailand as Expat: Do not visit Koh Tao. Nothing hurts this Mafia family more than a complete tourism boycott. And when they are no longer able to bribe their way out of any criminal investigation then there may finally justice be served. I’ve been living in Thailand over 12 years and most of my Thai friends say that a son of one of the islands owners is a serial rapist and murderer and is most likely the one responsible. With the level of corruption in Thailand and especially on the islands, the true killer will never be brought to justice.
@2ndTooth2 жыл бұрын
If it's that well known who and what he does he'll eventually do it to someone's family member that doesn't care about his connections and power. He'll be found dead somewhere and end up another "mysterious death" or the family themselves will get rid of him when they tire of covering for him.

@susanjones73892 жыл бұрын
The pool and area they chose to go swimming in was in fact closed, a whole section of that hotel was closed due to corona virus with the power supply turned off, to the rooms, pool etc (hence cctv cameras not working). So there was no staff there & no other guests, those guests shouldn't have been in that area. The tragedy possibly happened that the big guy got into trouble in the pool and his wife jumped in to try to save him and got into trouble herself trying to get him out. A swimming instructor explained to me that often in panic inexperienced people instead of throwing a floating life saving device to the person in trouble they jump in themselves, this is the wrong reaction. Also remember this pool is 2.2 metres deep. Anyone can drown in only 2 inches of water with less than half a cup of water ingested into the lungs. Swimming pools are dangerous.

I lived on Koh Tao for three years where I was a freelance diving instructor, and married a Thai woman who was also the owner of a small bar. There were several murders and rapes of tourists during the time I lived there, and the Thai's were always very quick to blame immigrant Burmese workers. I left the island and together with my wife moved to the mainland in 2008. There were only three policemen on the island when I lived there. One was responsible for collecting protection money, another was responsible for the drug business (reselling confiscated drugs) and the other officer I am not sure about. At the time of David and Hanna's murder at the King's Rock on south end of Sairee beach I had already returned to the UK, but kept in contact with a few Koh Tao residents. Apparently it was common knowledge on the island who had committed the crimes, but people were either paid off, or too scared to say anything. Yes AC Bar and the son of the owner were mentioned to me and not just by one person, but by several including Thais and foreigners. I was also told that they were responsible for other murders and rapes that had occurred previously. There are one or two members of other less prominent families who it is said have committed similar crimes on Koh Tao, but Burmese workers have always been found guilty.

@simonquintrell8686 Жыл бұрын
@@bildo8053 Because those families who's members are responsible are like a mafia and those that they can't intimidate or pay off simply disappear. Innocent Burmese workers were usually framed for the crimes. There were only 3 cops on the island when I lived on the island and each was responsible for running different rackets. For example, check points set up at random at night where visitors were stopped and searched for drugs, forced to pay off the cops if they were caught with any illicit substances, and those same confiscated substances were then sold on by people working for the cops.

And after watching this video and thinking back on one particular night when I went on a pub crawl on Koh Tao is giving me goosebumps and chills. One friend who went to the island before me warned me to avoid one particular bar (I can’t remember the name of the bar for some reason!) I only had one beer at that place but after we left that place I honestly don’t remember much and I’m not even sure how I made it back to my room. I just remember calling my friend in Germany and telling her I was reallyyyyy drunk even though I only had like 2 beers the entire night and she kept me company over the phone. We sat on the balcony with beers, ordered cocktails and food up to our room and tbh, it was the best two nights we had, because I felt safe. I just didn’t like all the hustle and bustle of the night scene. No wonder you hear horror stories of these young naive College students getting taken advantage off. Their young, clueless probably away for the first time on their own and most are simply not streetwise enough to pick up on trouble or suspicious people. I was on this island in summer of 2014 and I have an interesting story... I was riding a motorbike one night and was struck in the back of my head while riding. I flew off my bike and was injured pretty badly. Turned out it was a 'police officer' who was stopping me from riding without a helmet. His bike was not a police bike and his uniform was not a police uniform. He did have a flashing red light though. His English was not good. He was asking for my license but in the situation I was apprehensive to get out my wallet as I had a feeling something was up. I am an ex amateur rugby player from the UK. I'm not white so I didn't look like a conventional tourist which added more confusion to the situation as I'm convinced this man thought I was a foreign worker on the island. He persisted for my license but I felt like he was trying to mug me so I had this in the back of my mind... I was on the floor at the time tending to my bloody head while all this was happening but when I got up I squared up to the guy... I picked up a rock in my right hand as I got up... and said I left my wallet at the hotel and asked him if I could see his ID which he refused. I stood about a foot taller and he realised I could handle myself so without hesitation he just rode off. I was fully prepared to give him a right hook with that rock as I felt I was in a position of self defense. In a blind rage I followed him assuming if he was an officer that he would return to the police station but eventually it was clear he was going in a different direction. I continued on to the police station where I was able to verify this man was not in police uniform and I gave a description and told them the events but nothing came of it. They just helped me with the blood coming from my head and were deeply apologetic. Apart from that night I had a great time on the island... I'd shortly heard about some of these deaths I think the couple had passed away about a few weeks after I had been there and I remember hearing about it on local news... I thought to myself at the time that something is not right about that place and thought perhaps I would have had a similar fate. Very odd time.

As a Thai person myself, this is speechless. Condolences can’t do anything better to friends and families of the victims. I was aware of the 2 big news about Hanna&David and the couple that drowned in the pool. Somehow, I have never realized how close and connected these crimes you laid out and all in Koh Tao. I’ve never been there but always wanted to visit one day. In my opinion, Koh Tao is an island that’s way out and so many messy things can go about. These local people thought they can cover things up but I am glad it’s out in the open. Anyway, I think it’s good that you brought this to the attention of many other tourists to reconsider going to Koh Tao. I do agree in one of the comments to boycott the place. The big clean up needs to take place. I am furious as I love my country so much and hate when shit like this happens. Respect to you and I hope and really wish who do visit Thailand to never come across anything like this but only good things. Please excuse me if my saying in this offend anyone who reads this. My sincere apologies and condolences. 🙏

You don’t need to apologize for the horrid actions of some of the people in your country. Every country has its bad spots. I can name a few areas in my country that I suggest people avoid if they want to remain safe. Whether it’s due to the people, wildlife or weather, there will always be a spot that isn’t managed well enough to host tourists. The most we can do is advise others to find a different, equally as beautiful destination to visit.

As someone who lived and worked in Thailand for 3 years, during orientation for the job our HR discussed to avoid Koh Tao because it is known for many disappearances of foreigners. But living there you will see the dark side of the whole Thailand. Corruption is one of the many things you will see. And these disappearances of foreigners happens everywhere in Thailand and also there are many cases of “jumpers” for foreigners. Many buildings there has cases of foreigners “jumping” off the building and the amazing part is it won’t make it to the news. Some foreigner “jumped” from the rooftop of my building, I saw the mess myself and tried searching what actually happened but it was never on the news. And police there? No help at all especially to foreigners. There are other better places to go. Was a good decision to leave Thailand.

I have a very close friend who had drugs planted on them by a hostel owner minutes before the police came into the hostel, the police arrested them and drove them into the middle of nowhere, the police threatened to shoot them in the knee before arresting them and taking their money telling them not to contact the British embassy. Thankfully they did and thankfully they had a contact over there who worked as a lawyer. Whilst in a jail cell they were threatened if they didn’t plead guilty to owning drugs. They ended up going to trial after a week in a jail cell where they were chained to all of the other prisoners (including a pregnant Thai woman who was sentenced to death just before them) thankfully with help from the lawyer they were let off and banned from entering thialand for 10 years. They watched the latest show (murder in paradise…. I think) and pointed out one of the policemen interviewed in it as one of the ones that arrested him. The place is corrupt as hell and I am so thankful that they didn’t end up the way these poor people did. (This version of the story is cut down, they went through hell whilst in jail)

As I am Thai, this video is very useful and very informative... here’s why the legal system fails in Thailand. 1. Workforce overload - especially in Koh Tao where they’re many tourists and police need to travel between 2 islands, causing the delay when bad thing happens. there’s DNA analysis but with delay and poor techniques, some cannot be used. 2. Serial Killer (or killers) on the loose - there’s no system which connect cases with the same Method of Operation. Serial killers in Thailand (a number of 3 from my knowledge) got caught by their own mistakes. Therefore, if there’s no DNA, no camera, no CCTV, so there’s no confession. Thanks to you and your channel for collecting and making a connection. As this things may be continue for some period of time, here’s some advice. 1. travel to other location - there are many islands which are as beautiful as Koh Tao, such as Krabi, Lipe, Phuket. 2. Avoid unnecessary argument with locals - you don’t know when you are talking to the mafia. you can get beaten up. 3. if you travel to remote location, you should travel with your trust Thai friends. most are generous and not harmful 4. always keep update to your relatives

I told the police in my city that I needed help, and they told me that I needed to talk to the provincial police where it happened. I said that I was concerned the police might be friends with people involved (which I had good reason to know, but I was very polite and diplomatic about it) and asked if the tourist police could help advocate for me. The officer yelled at me for accusing the police of corruption and gave me a lecture. So nothing came of it, after I had just gotten out of 10 days in the hospital with thousands of dollars in medical bills. Still better off than the poor Burmese migrants who got framed, though. Noticed how they were seemed calmed and unbothered from the crime scenes? that's becoz they are after the projection of Thailand to the world. They imnediately wrapped it up not to make it sensationalized. I was all around the islands of Thailand but avoided Koh Tao specifically. Local friends usually told me not to go alone for a trip or stay late night alone. I had been advice to always go in a group of ppl for they know the reasons why. That mafia system has been applied in all islands around the North and South and if you are just a tourist staying for a month make sure that you personally know a locals in places you're interested to visit. There were not just 4,5,6 or 10 murders happened in the island but they are many since late 1990's that even locals from other islands knew but kept mummed about it. This is the land of superficial smile but chosen by ppl who wanted a free wild life. Thailand I might say addictive but dangerous. It takes long years of living before you discover what's really goin around inside.

I planned a visit to Thailand and Koh Tao a few years back. I've travelled extensively since I left University, and always did research in advance. Kah Tao immediately stood out as a problematic destination so I struck it off my list. Thailand is a beautiful country but the Police are too corrupt for words. In fact, corruption is virtually the norm there. People can be fooled into believing that beautiful, exotic places are safe. I found the opposite to be true.

Buddy and I stayed in a hostel in Koh Tao for almost a month during the summer of 2013. Stayed on the beach, got scuba certified, partied, the whole nine yards. We learned there were only 2 or 3 cops on the whole island, one of which worked for the ‘family’. Wasn’t super clear what that meant at the time. Several diving acquaintances reported accidentally motor biking through massive cannabis fields on the island, in the middle of the jungle areas. Armed men cornered them and let them go, as long as they left quickly. We also heard stories of beers and drinks being spiked, so we took extra care to only buy our own cans and bottles. Overall, the strip of dive shops and bars on the coast seem to be the safest place, provided you keep your nose clean and are courteous. Maybe we were just young, dumb, and super lucky.

I have been to Thailand a couple of times and I have to say it's not the safest of countries. Granted there are many beautiful places to visit and fun things to do, it is best to visit with a trusted Thai local friend to bring you around and keep you away from danger. NEVER wander off alone no matter if you are a girl or a guy as in this case. Stick to the crowded places and the street lights and you're good. ✨

True, it is frightening especially so when you don't understand what they are saying. The van I was in got blocked by a group of "policeman" on our way to whitewater rafting, it was only after they noticed the camera crew filming in the van that they backed away and let us pass. I hope everyone take caution whilst on their trip there, especially if they plan to drink and bar hop. 🙏🏻

This reminds me when I was on holiday in Thailand with my family. My sister insisted going to an island (not sure which) with her then girlfriend. My mum being Thai knew of the place and kept warning them to not go, that it was extremely dangerous. They ignored this and went, the night they were there, two tourists were killed. I wondered whilst watching if it was the Hannah and David case, but we went quite a few years earlier to this. Thankfully my both were safe and returned quickly in the morning. My mum is very cautious to this day on dangers of Thailand from growing up there. Maybe overly cautious at times. But I think I would never go without her. She understands the ways there and what's safe. She even warned me not to go on a waterside at a water park. My sister convinced me too. I nearly came off half way up and then my sister sliced her foot open and had to go to hospital. The staff were unhelpful and laughed at her girlfriend who was British and had large eyes. Apparently they kept joking she looked like an owl when she was trying to get help. This is the same water park a little boy died at after being sucked into the water pump not long after. I found some Thai can sometimes be quite funny around foreigners. They regularly walked by me and my mum commenting that I looked falang (white /western / European) (I am half English). And children even called my stepdad falang kee nok (white bird 💩). Obviously as anywhere this isn't all people and there are mostly good people. Just unfortunately the bad is more noticeable.
@helmutkogelberger66122 жыл бұрын
I hate to bring it to you but "white" in Thai is "(si) khiao". The prefix "kee" stands for something bad e.g. "kee giat" meaning lazy. "Kee nok farang" best translates as "birdshit foreigner".
@Lychiwa2 жыл бұрын
@@helmutkogelberger6612 that's interesting to see where kee comes from. Sorry I should have explained even though my mum is Thai I don't speak the language. I hear translations from her which sometimes she can struggle to explain to me, so I get a bit of a whishy-washy term usually. She used the term white to imply the skin colour, I guess this was more because Thai have darker skin so I guess its easier spotting a foreigner with paler complexion. Might be why it was explained this way to me.

Ignorance to the past is what drives people to go. Especially in the case of exoticism, people focus on simply the good while ignoring the bad in some form of strange reverse xenophobia, if that make sense.
