I'm from England and we do have minced meat which is meat and the fruit mincemeat in mince pies. But we're used to it here i can imagine it being confusing for other countries. I rememeber when i was an exchange student in canada and for the life of me i couldnt work out what ground beef was, i thought it was something new id never had. Turns out it was just minced meat. 😅 and dont get me started on chips, biscuits, trunk etc. So many miss-translations

Hi Lady Sukama 🙂 Thanks for piping in with your thoughts, I love to hear from people in different areas of the world. I'm in Canada, but knew an old baker lady who was born in the U.K. and her mom's mincemeat always contained meat. It seems that for us in Canada, mincemeat has really been "dumbed down" , on the ingredient list for the one I'm using, there is no "real" suet but a vegetable based version, which really in my mind isn't suet LOL. I don't think a meat version would fly here in Canada, most know mince meat as a sweet pastry with fruits and sometimes nuts in the mixture. The other thing that is confused is the name, some call it "minced" meat, some say "mince" meat. Yeah it's an interesting topic for sure. For my old lady friend from the U.K. she had to add real suet to it to make it feel right for her. She passed away a few years ago, and I miss my chats with her. She was an awesome baker. Anyway thanks for your input, I really enjoyed reading it ! 🙂

It used to contain minced meat. Now the only ingredient linking it's name to the past is the suet. Traditionally beef suet though nowadays most mincemeat contains vegetarian suet.

Hi Carol ! Thanks for your input, I enjoy reading anything anyone has to offer. Yeah it's an interesting thing how recipes change, and it has 100% to do with the tastes changing ( population ) in certain parts of the world. North America for example, - In the United States this really isn't a popular dessert tart. In Canada, most know of it, but if you ask 10 people, I'm willing to bet all 10 would say I'll take the meat free version ( including suet ) It's like BBQ places up here in Canada.... they tone down BBQ ribs in all the main places, so as to not shock customers with *real* BBQ you would find down south. Flavours on ribs up here at these places are very neutral, like you would find on a bottle of regular ol' BBQ sauce. There are places that do real BBQ but they are few and far between. Companies are smart, they do a lot of research for different areas in the world to maximize profits.

@@BakeLikeAPro I'm from the UK. Christmas isn't Christmas without mince pies. My mum makes her own mincemeat (much nicer than shop bought). I occasionally make my own too.

Yes ! and so so yummy ! I wish more people knew about these amazing tarts. Here in Canada we only eat them at Christmas time, and I guess that's part of the magic, because you look forward to them that much more only having them once a year. Thanks so much for watching ! 😊
