I was sitting here watching another of your videos talking about if Nogi will make Gi obsolete and a thought that came to mind was that when it comes to Gi and self-defense, many people who are against the Gi say "Who is wearing a Gi in day to day life?" The problem with that statement is that while people may not be wearing big/heavy clothing, people still are typically wearing clothes. How many layers and if they are loose or not depends on the environment of where you are but it is still clothes and that can affect how well you execute your techniques. If you eliminate techniques that exist exclusively to Gi such as worm guard, spider guard, and lapel traps/chokes, you still have trained to deal with loose clothes and the friction from clothes. In my opinion, training both would serve you better for self-defense as they compliment each other in interesting and unexpected ways but if you are training for fun/weight loss, do which ever you enjoy more.

Half the stuff in no Gi wont work in a real fight. I train at 10th planet and I love the rubber guard but I know it would be risky trying that in a real street fight. Times that by 2 when your wearing the Gi.

I respect your opinion, but disagree with your conclusions. Whether you train in gi or no gi you will have a significant advantage in a street fight against someone who doesn't train. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works in a street fight and that has been proven for almist 100 years of evidence, but each person has to make a personal judgment call on what techniques they will use. I wish you success in using your judgment and skills if you ever need them to defend yourself.

Wrestling is a great martial art and hopefully your high school has a good Wrestling coach to help the kids with discipline and development.

Too me, it’s about what will be best to train that will prepare you for self defense in a street fight. And it’s hands down no gi Jiu Jitsu. You’ll never be walking down the street in a gi

If your opponent has clothes on then the gi techniques will work. If your opponent has no clothes like on the beach then no gi techniques are best.

Most clothes will tear because the Gi is way more durable that a regular clothes.

@shyfly6560 the fighter will have to make a on the spot judgement decision on whether to grab the clothing in a street fight.

If you watch people fight they always grab clothes. Even new people to no gi grappling have to be reminded to not grab the rash guards. If you aren’t used to be held down by your clothes you’ll be screwed in a fight. As a bouncer I watched this happens a bunch. And now that I live in Maine everyone has thick hoodies or jackets at least half the year.
