I'm saying exactly the same - must resist! - My brother worked for Apple some years ago, and he advises to sit tight for at least 6 months until any problems are fixed and incorporated into the next Apple silicon macs. There's no substitute for feedback from hundreds of thousands of users, no matter how much testing you do before launch.

Just get one now! I got an M1 Air and it's awesome! I'm waiting for the 14" M1X MacBook Pro (if the rumors are true), and when it comes out I'll just sell the M1 Air for a hundred bucks less than I paid for it, so it should only cost me a few hundred to upgrade when it's time! People used to keep computers for a long time back when they were upgrade-able, but with everything in the cloud now it's super easy to just log in to a new computer with your iCloud account, everything downloads onto it, and then just wipe the old computer and sell it! There's no reason not to get an M1 right now. Just do it. You know you want to... ;)

@@toni.k it's infuriating. I bought it last year and day one it was just loud. Didn't seem broke, but definitely loud. Sent it in over the summer because I pushed it off. They sent it back and it sounded worse. Sent it in again a week later and it sounded fine...long enough for the warranty to go out. Now it sounds like nails in a blender when the fan kicks in

Got the M1 Air as my first-ever Mac and it is simply OUTSTANDING. Never used a computer that runs my applications as fast as this thing, battery life is incredible, and somehow it barely generates any heat at all.

Got it for about a month now, and this is the first MacBook that has really excited me since the first MacBook Retina, and for very different reasons. Both the performance and battery life of the base model MacBook Air continue to impress day after day!

Agreed....the “heat / energy” savings is the really the big story about this M1 bloodline.... Cool processors change everything. And then the “all in one” SOC concept is another great, although old idea. It’s impressive they were so successful with this attempt. But shocking to me is Rosetta works like magic...mostly. Replaced my 2017 Air with the new M1 Macbook Pro. This M1 Pro amazes me everyday. On my 2017 Air, an hour of Zoom or Teams call would make it hot and the fans would blast off. This also drained the battery, and it took a good 4-5 seconds for it to wake from sleep. Now it’s all gone. This is by far my best MacBook purchase!! 🥳. Nice video Luke!!

All I could say was the new processor was effectively invisible because you didn't notice it - by the time you'd thought about it, it had done what you'd asked therefore it ceased to be relevant, ridiculous though that sounds. I'm not a 'power user' (whatever that means these days), probably the most taxing thing I'll ask it to do is some photo editing. Lovely screen, nice keyboard, Touch ID is a nice thing. Beautiful to look at. I guess I'll miss the peeling rubber base which rocked when I typed but I could replicate that somehow...

For me, doing 4k editing in Resolve with relatively "simple" edits and moderate color grading, I'm thinking it should do pretty well for me! Yesterday I went to Best Buy and I purchased an M1 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB Hard drive. I was able to get 19 hours out of the battery. The fan has never come on. After I installed all of my needed software, I still have 70% free space on the hard drive. This M1 is a game-changer and the reason I bought the entry-level unit for 1299.00 at best buy is that I think within the next 2 or 3 months they are going to be hard to find! Have been using my m1 macbook pro for a couple weeks now and I have to say I've been loving it. Only thing I would reference is that the reviewers aren't saying is that the fans do actually come on. They come on 2 minutes into a cinebench, they are audible, but not loud. However, if I push the cpu and gpu at the same time, the fan goes full blast. So just know that these do still get hot. However, the normal user is probably not going to push their machine that hard.

Traded in my 2018 i3 mini for a base M1 mini and it's probably the best upgrade decision I've ever made since my first Atari 800 back in 1980. No more stuttering and loud fan. No matter what I throw at it, I can't get it to slow down or spin the fan up. If you're just using your Mac for everyday use cases, your mind will explode at the value proposition of this thing.

What an awesome video and comparison! While I'm not necessarily a Mac fan, I can't but be very impressed both by Apple's push toward their own chips and the absolute failure of Intel keeping pace. They have to know they're in hot water. It will be interesting once higher desktop style versions of this chip come out, and what the PC makers do in response. But hey, a Mac that won't scorch your lap, runs better, longer, and is more powerful is certainly a WIN! Have fun with your new awesome machine!

I still have a 2013 13 inch MacBook Air. 4gb of ram 128gb of storage. Works great with Big Sur and does all most people would do. Word processing web browsing etc. I could upgrade but losing MagSafe and traditional USB ports would be killer not to mention sd card reader!

I have a 2014 air with 8gb ram and 512ssd and its still kicking it pretty good. It's been my daily university drive for my whole career and I still use it pretty regularly for PowerPoint, Excel, web browsing and zoom meetings, I love it. But I ordered a new m1 macbook and honestly can't wait to receive it already 🙌

Have you looked how much it is to replace that MagSafe? USB-C is the future, replacement cables are cheap and offered in many different lengths (and stronger) also you can small plug adapters for USB-A devices for a small cost. I admit I miss the sd card reader but just plugging my camera in via the USB-C cable offers just as quick transfer speeds without the need to take the sd card out the camera, I do it with my GoPro Max. Just bite the bullet and upgrade, you know you want to...

Replaced my 2011 15” MacBook Pro with the M1 Mac Mini. My God is this an upgrade. Applications load almost instantly. I haven’t gotten the spinning beach ball of death once! I got a 24.1” display and a Logitech keyboard (with a hand-me-down mouse). And the whole setup was $800. Way cheaper than the $1,100+ I would have had to fork over for the 13” Pro. No offense to everyone that did buy the Pro. Good on you. I hope you love your purchase. I just can’t afford it. Lol P.S. I can play Arknights natively on this thing without Bluestacks? Hell yeah.

Luke I love your videos! You help with a lot. I bought a 13 inch MacBook Pro back in may 2020 when they did a "refresh." I didn't have a computer at the time and everything I did own was in the Mac eco system. I use my MacBook for research, web browsing, casual video watching and just basic every day stuff. I'm curious if I should upgrade to the M1? My MacBook is not even a year old. My biggest temptation is that great battery life! I keep telling myself to wait a year or two that way I'll have used my lap top efficiently, we'll be some generations in to Apple silicon and deff won't be having any problems with compatibility issues. I'm curious for other opinions. Again. Awesome channel!

I upgraded my MBP unibody mid-2012 when the pandemic began (diy SSD, RAM and battery replacement) and I’m trying to hold on until the redesigned macbooks next year but i am sooo tempted to just get the Air in a couple months 😭

For the KZbin 4K video playback test, what browser did you use for the test? I'd assume Safari since it'd be optimized for MacOS.

The biggest hold up with M1 for dev is the virtualization/hyper vision stuff (i.e. Docker).

I'm on an M1 Mac mini and it's.... imperfect. It could do with some polish, to be honest. 9/10 it's good - but it has some issues. #1 is just crazy little bugs - things like when it goes to screensaver, sometimes, you get a black screen with nothing on it, when you tap the keyboard. You can type your password into the blackness and unlock it and it's fine - but it's a bug. Bluetooth speakers are *janky as hell* and others have found this, too. Sometimes, drop down menus (like Apple's own ones) are blank - you can click where a word *would* be and it works, but you can't see anything. I think this will all be fixed in Big Sur updates - but it does lack some polish.

Very nice to hear that crossover works on M1. Have you tried VirtualBox Parallels or vmware with an x86 OS?

Seen a lot of reports that using something like the Samsung T5 or T7 driving over thunderbolt has a very reduced speed on these M1 macs. I wondered if you could do a quick test if you have one, out that info out there if there is a issue!? Thanks.

I have changed my 2012 13" Unibody MacBook Pro with a 2020 Intel one, I'm looking forward to own a M1 MacBook Pro maybe 3 or 4 years later because Turkey.

Which color of the Air should I choose? Grey looks cool externally but I afraid that the keyboard part may look depressing or dull after some time. Silver and gold are more uplifting colors but the gold keyboard seems more distracting ? Also, the shade of gold on keyboard is not as nice looking as that on the lid, it feels more plastic-like around the keyboard.

Don’t support the hype. Get Intel 16” MacBook Pro - it’s great, much better than M1. It can run Windows as well and any other x86 app natively! No emulation hassle and waiting for ARM apps to be written.

@@alex.maxwell nah. It over heats and underperform compared to a cheaper M1 and will get absolutely destroyed by the one that comes in higher end macs. You seem like someone who just wants to justify their intel model.

I went from a tricked out 16" MacBook Pro, to a 13" M1 MacBook Pro, and I can't go back. I love this little machine and am really excited to see what Apple comes up with for other Apple Silicon Macs

I own a MacBook Pro 16 and I'm buying the MacBook Air because I just want a quiet computer. Also, hearing that its twice as fast as doing training is great because I do ML is a hobby.
