This looks the business! It looks like Honda may just have the basis for the best adventure bike out there. It's a Honda so already it's the most reliable adventure bike in the class and it looks like they've done it right with the off road focus. Can't wait!

Yertle The Turtle There is a manual mode on the DCT. I have the Crosstourer DCT and it is awesome. Automatic or manual, you can choose. Manual mode was being used in the video, it is controlled by the thumb and index finger on the left hand. I had a test ride in both the DCT version and the manual clutch version and found the DCT to be unbeatable, in my opinion. Have a go, you maybe pleasantly surprised !!!

There's a reason why Honda was late with launching the new Africa Twin. The funniest and most powerful big offroad/adventure bike for many years was the KTM 950 Adventure that was launched in 2003 (and later became 990 Adventure.) But then, in 2013 KTM launched the 1190 Adventure. Fully specced with advanced technology, with power, brakes and suspension well within the R-bike category, and still a good offroader (for such a huge bike) and a good tourer. That bike is the benchmark now, and I am very curious to see if Honda can outperform the KTM.

Can't wait no more. DCT maybe the choice for me but people will beg to differ. Shifting is great but DCT is the wave of the future. My KLR is old with prehistoric ideas but runs like a dream:)) Just like my old Honda S2000 that had a stick shift. Awesome machine but then I got an M3 with a DCT-blew my mind how fast it was. Will I miss the clutch? Not at all but will I get another car with a stick....probably. My point is don't hate on the guy what he drives.-stick or auto. Just be happy for the person. We drive because we have to but I drive because I love to. Stay safe!

+MilhausMN fit and finish does suck compared to my previous VW, but it's much cheaper to own and operate. I will agree that the engine braking in hilly terrain is annoying, but only occurs with speed control on. I can usually just turn off speed control as the speed starts to pick up and before it tries to engine brake. The mileage it delivers is amazing though. I've gone on a few road trips this past summer and average 40mpg. I also have long commutes for school and the Air National Guard, so it really works perfectly for me.

I wonder if the seat is comfortable for extended rides. I love "dual-sports-enduro" style bikes. I have a 91 R-100-GS with 135,000 miles on it, and enjoy it more than my other 7 bikes, 4 of which are BMW. In my mind they sit like a motorcycle should, upright with wide bars. If you aren't comfortable on a bike they aren't much fun to ride. I'd love to give the Honda a ride. Wish I had the money to "invest" in another bike.

I really can't imagine to ride off-road without a clutch, for me it is really just an extension of the throttle. I would not know how to : - Achieve smoother traction on loose ground by using a higher gear - Wheelie over a sudden obstacle or steep bank - Control the slide out of corners - Erase engine braking when not desired.... Tell me the way around it and I am in for it.
@dmsentra
@dmsentra 9 жыл бұрын
+yoshyoka You have to realize, this is an adv bike, not a ds or dirt. adv bikes get to hangout at the coffee shops a lot more, aimed at people that wish they could ride a real bike, instead of those that actually do. The first thing I checked was weight when I saw the specs, killed it right there and dct option stuck another knife in it.
@yoshyoka
@yoshyoka 9 жыл бұрын
+dmsentra Adventure.. should be something versatile that you can take off-road. I have taken an old Africa twin up mountain paths that usually are the domain of enduro bikes, I would expect the new one to be able to do the same. The weight is surely an issue, yet if it is nicely balanced it is a lesser concern: try a KTM Adventure R and give it a try.
@kloppskalli
@kloppskalli 9 жыл бұрын
+yoshyoka as lon as i manage to stay on top of the bike the weight isnt an issue - if you need to pick up the bike on a slope 230 kilo must hurt. (I own a ktm640Adv)
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 9 жыл бұрын
+yoshyoka The old Africa was much lighter. He's right, this is an adv bike, not an enduro. Most of those things won't apply for the average person who buys one with a DCT, as the only offroading they'll do will be on a dirt road where none of that is required. If somebody wants to do more than that then they won't buy the DCT...but don't get confused about the primary demo of this bike, they won't be offroading, and if they do, it'll be in every high traction off-road scenarios, not mud pits and single trails.
@yoshyoka
@yoshyoka 9 жыл бұрын
+MrSlowestD16 You are sadly right and this is exactly what disapoints me. I would use the bike exactly as they do in the demo, which I can do on the old Twin. It is sad that the successor is unable to match the old guard. I wait for a demo ride and will see!
@PaddyMcQueen
@PaddyMcQueen 9 жыл бұрын
I really hope honda will offer the Manual as standard... I will not replace my rd07 with a stupid DCT. Is better to invest on suspension rather then transmission. Riders know how to shift normally and nothing helps you more than a good manual clutch on the dirt!

MrSlowestD16 Perhaps. I thought the Africa Twin was lighter than the R1200GS.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 9 жыл бұрын
+DARIVS ARCHITECTVS Yeah, a bit, the AFT is 503 (or 530 with DCT) and the R1200GS is 525. The KTM 1190 Adv is right about that 530 marker too I think. They're all in the same ball park. I think the closest competitor the africa twin will have in the adventure group is the 1190 Adv R, as it'll probably be one of the most off road oriented. Though it's hard to compare it to something like a DRZ which is like 320 or WR250 which is 300 - I'd consider them real enduros.

I hope they made something smaller like the original africa twin 750 or so and make it even lighter. I still don't understand why you need 1000cc + on an adventure bike.
@MrStevecro
@MrStevecro 9 жыл бұрын
paulusandronicus i think the torque and the way it builds in linear fashion is the strong point of 1000cc. Under 100 hp is fine - my 2014 Vstrom 1000 is about those figures and similar weight and it makes for a really strong, steady progress. IMO that's where the big German/Austrian machines are going overboard with 125 -150hp. I do note your point though. My modified DR650 is an absolute hoot off road with 40 RWHP, 350 lbs

MrStevecro Imagine Ktm 690. Weighs the same, but with almost twice as much power.
@paulusandronicus
@paulusandronicus 9 жыл бұрын
MrStevecro Well apparently KTM is making a mid size (650-750) v-twin adventure I guess I'll wait for that one to come out sounds like just what i've been waiting for. I really thought this new Africa Twin was going to be a 750 and very lightweight (for an adventure bike). Another thing I don't understand is why are they loading these things with all this high tech stuff (DCT, etc) I think that's just putting more stuff in them that can fail and you don't want that in a bike you are going to take to remote places. The old Africa Twin was very simplistic (even for its time) but very rugged, was pretty much bulletproof.
@paulusandronicus
@paulusandronicus 9 жыл бұрын
***** I will be in line as well ;) although I doubt that will ever happen everything seems to be so marketing driven. You are absolutely right. I always see those guys in the big bmw's with all the gear and panniers, etc. on the road, never off road. I think its just a trend; perhaps the tourers are out of fashion so they get the "cool" "adventure" bikes instead.
@barryweaver8833
@barryweaver8833 7 жыл бұрын
I can tell you why!! if you weigh 260 lbs like I do just trust me :) Also for a more laid back riding style- of course I do speak for myself here but when I ride off road it isn't anything worth filming. I also want this bike to be my "all in one bike - or one bike solution" so the bigger cc engine will help when on the road which is where I will be the most, but anything smaller than a liter bike and I'm not interested.

Really interesting preview of the bike, this probably get BMW into troubles, let's wait the new F800GS response to that, the two bikes are probably gonna be really close in therm of general architecture. But HONDA there is a serious mistake with the lack of crank transmission, however you know how to do it; It would be great to finally see that on a middle class adventure bike. If BMW manages to feature it on the future F8GS it's the end of the game ..

n001m002 The Triumph Tiger 800 is less than that.. Honda is getting back in late to a now crowded high end adventure bike market still dominated by BMW of all companies. KTM has an amazing machine, Triumph is very competitive too. Honda can't screw this up and make it in a market where other companies are sticking with it hard. The Japanese have a really bad reputation for dropping products that don't sell well right off,leaving owners with a "rare" bike that ends up being a short lived relationship. Honda and Yamaha are bad for this, Suzuki on the other hand has done very well with their V-strom models as Kawasaki has with the budget priced KLR.

I've ridden the big Yamaha,and it's useless in real world off road riding as it's geared for higher speeds. There's a reason most companies stick with chain drive. Oh, and another $500 or more on the price for shaft drive can be a deal breaker for a lot of people.

6:10 What an error in judgement!! I rode AT in Bolivia, where in those days were not to many asfalt roads. I loved the country and my bike, which almost never let me down. I had trouble with the gaspump and with the security switch in the sidestand, that was it. My buddy's BMW was a nightmare of breakdowns. So I waited 3 years for a new AT, but Honda slept on and I bought XT1200Z as she has not that many "bavarian stupidity tools" on her. Dear Honda! There is no competition to the old Africa Twin till today. All you had to do was to build the same moto for us (ok maybe 20 horses more ;-)). Nobody needs the "bavarian gimmecks" - all we want is a real trustworthy honest bike, which we could ride thru hell and back. I could really get angry listening such a BS from Honda. Anyway, they lost me to Yamaha and my XT is very reliable too, although here I do not cross rivers and I do not have 80% dirttracks and I do not ..... ;-)

To me it looks like instead of putting knobbies on a touring bike like BMW or Triumph, they went back to the concept of a dirtbike that was built to ride long distances the right way. Like the KTM 990, it's a bigger dirtbike, not a touring bike with knobbies and hard panniers.

I'm seriously looking at 'side grading' to something like this....probably this, to be honest. A hundred nags.....comfy....nothing too much of a surprise. I used to do enduro, back a couple of decades ago. I think we all go off, and back on to this style of bike. Just depends on where your head's at, and your time in life.

Why is Honda going from crf250l to a crf1000l DS a 1000cc is to big to be a DS machine a crf450l would be much better for real DS work I think Honda is making huge mistake by making a 1000cc DS bike I don't get it they already have a 450cc dirt bike which would make a great DS bike I own a 2014 crf250l and its a good DS machine but not enough power a 450 would be perfect DS work. The crf1000 would be better as a super moto bike than a true DS bike this thing is more suited for just light fire trails but I would buy a super moto version of it which I'm sure Honda will not make.

+altruistic the 450 requires a lot of maintenance, and wont reach as high speeds as 1000cc, also a 1000cc bike works well for joyrides, a 450 is too nervous, only for agressive kind of riding! going full throtle on a crf 450 for a long time(road use) would kill it in short time, for an engine to be durable it cant be full of power and low cc, it as to be high cc and low power. thats why old africa twin 750 was high cc and still was +- the same power as the 250crf

+London Roulette Disagree, the market may be there for 1000cc,but it's very much there for 450cc also. Lots and lots of people have already voiced their desires for it.

I am so disappointed this bike is going to have DCT, If it isn't optional this bike will not make it far in the US.

SplinteredPerception You can't judge technology you have yet to try. And i'm really confused as to why there are so many questioning whether or not DCT will be optional. Do you guys just want to cry about something?? OF COURSE it will be optional.

Are we really supposed to believe that the sound of a parallel twin is the exciting part?
@mjodr
@mjodr 9 жыл бұрын
aluisious It's a specific firing pattern that sounds like a v-twin. Same as the Yamaha FZ-07. IMO nothing sounds better than a Ducati, and to get that sound out of a parallel twin is pretty freakin' cool. Look up videos of FZ-07's with proper exhausts. Sounds like sex. Now image a deeper tone out of this bigger displacement. It's going to sound epic with a real exhaust.

aluisious It should be OK - the 270 degree configuration will see to that. My 2001 Bonneville with 180 degree configuration sounded lame while the modification to 270 on the Bonneville America was world's apart

+dmsentra ok, maybe not "most" but the average dirtrider (and some advanced as well) wants the extra comfort/easiness of standing up and not have to worry about clutch operation. The DCT is just that and comes from the factory not as an aftermarket solution with doubious compatibility...
@dmsentra

+C_R_O_M__________ No thanks. Just drop the displacement 2-400cc, chuck the extra fidgetdoodad stuff and leave me a couple power ports, drop the weight 75-100 pounds and I'm fine. No auto/semi-auto trans of any type.

You should have called it the AutralianTwin. Why? Coz Austrlia's where it's all at mate. Simple. We have literally (except active an active volcano) type of terrain on Earth. You can ride outback for two days and not see another sign of human existence except the track you're on and, maybe, the odd jetliner overhead. Africa Twin? Really?

Does anyone think is Necessary to Spend 14 thousand euros just to ride like this? When you can do the same in a bike that cost only a fraction of that!! and even better on a lighter weight than this and inexpensive to maintain!!

uhhhh I hate all this false smile corporate hype. This Africa twin is a MASSIVE disappointment. Just look at the weight of it. 235kg. It's as heavy as the original whilst adding loads of gimmicks and electronics to make it 10x more unreliable and dealer dependent. Another GS clone for parking outside Starbucks. Such a shame. Heart broken..

500lb 1000cc pig. Not what the adventure bike market really needed. when will one of the japanese companies make a proper off road adventure bike under 400lbs. Maybe 450-650cc and light enough to pickup off the ground easy when your off road and in the mud or loose gravel.

+andree hammerschmidt no, there is some confusion about the abs. It isn't clear if you need dct for abs (like the nc700). dct is certainly just an option. Now your original statement makes sense though.
