I'd like to know how imprisoning your enemies in currency is a practical move, though. Maybe it keeps them in a state of suspension for questioning down the line, but we see other coins in future episodes and Runaan is not the only one who's awake for this - that and taunting cornered foes like he does are both needlessly cruel. An example of that that's already happened is with Callum, when Verin stole his breath - presumably to have him suffocate to death for knowing too much - when he could have easily taken the kid's life another, quicker and less sadistic way. He can go ahead and call himself a pragmatist all he wants, but on some level, the man inflicts pain on others solely because he enjoys it.

The way I read it, Ellis's reaction to the Primal Stone was more disapproval that Callum wasn't taking any credit for being a mage. I took her expression there to basically mean, "wow, you really shouldn't be discounting your own talent like that."

Although I feel like that's kind of unfair. Yeah dark magic can do some messed up stuff but so can every other type of magic. Like a sun mage could boil your blood, drop by drop and a moon mage can make you see your loved ones die over and over again. As for the appearance, it's just that, an appearance. There doesn't seem to be any physical of health based damage. He just gains the colors of dark magic same way a sunfire elf has the colors of the sun or a tidebound elf gains the appearence of the sea.
