I don't know if I could be considered nice for being a brutally honest atheist. As an atheist, you see, I don't consider it moral to peddle afterlife threats and promises. I have found no reason to believe that anyone can have an afterlife of any kind, and no reason to believe that anyone is being judged. Christians seem to think that their beliefs give them the right to judge others, and that angers me.
@Alen-gr1xm14 күн бұрын
That's precisely what makes Christianity unpalatable to me as an atheist as well. Even when I tried being a believer, I was unable to talk Christianeze and bug people with what I perceived as baloney claims.
@clemstevenson14 күн бұрын
@@Alen-gr1xm Yes, the awful thing about Christian beliefs is that everyone has to be burdened with guilt, and then offered a way out of the consequences. There is no supporting evidence for the existence of divine law, and the NDE claims appear to be dependent upon the beliefs of the claimant. Whilst I don’t assume that all NDE claims are fictional, I don’t believe that any of them are anything more that the intense dreams of people under extreme stress.

@clemstevenson I agree with everything you stated. My dad had a near-death experience, and there was no vision or mention of any god since he didn't believe back then. Fast forward twenty-five years, and my mom has kind of nudged him into sounding more like a believer, but he's dealing with some serious health issues and doesn't have much time left. He was expected to pass a while ago, yet here he is. It's tough to watch him suffer and hear him in pain. Honestly, it feels like life from beginning to end doesn't really connect with any loving or caring deity.
@clemstevenson14 күн бұрын
@@Alen-gr1xm From what I’ve heard, the ‘missing god’ scenario seems pretty common. I’m pretty sure that it’s induced by stress, as my only ‘experience’ had been a ‘tunnel’. That was when I was a kid, and I had only been anesthetised with gas, for dental work. My wife has never reported any such thing, even after being under anaesthetic for hours for a major cancer op in 2009. If that op, conducted at the Royal Free Hospital (hospital buildings have been situated there since the 19th century), London, had not been successful, she would have died in 2009. Speaking of bodily organs, it is obvious that humans were not ‘created’, as they are clearly composed of recycled old parts. Some of those old parts are now considered vestigial.

I would believe if a faith healer prayed over an amputee and it grew back. Or, if an alien race arrived and presented us with a bible that was identical to our own.

I'm very interested in the prophecy. All I know so far is the mother was a young woman but not a virgin. The child was to be born in Bethlehem. The question reveals a profound misunderstanding. We don't START with the conclusion we'd like to be true and THEN go out looking for evidence to support it. We first look at what is true and then try to see where that data might lead. It's a bottom up methodology that first establishes a basic understanding of reality and then gradually builds toward a more comprehensive, more complete account. When you start with your conclusion already spelled out and committed, you've got to build up an entire justification for it - and preemptively discard all completing hypotheses - before you can reach a point of declaring that you were right. In other words, you have to invest everything you have in the conclusion before you have even preliminary data which favors it. Isn't this the perfect setting for cognitive bias and cjerty picking? And isn't it also a perfect setup for a Sunk Costs fallacy?

Matt never gives an answer other than "I don't know, but God does," which seems like the same cop out answer that Christians give when atheists ask questions like "do you think I am deserving of Hell?" "Only God knows." How about God comes down from the sky and talks to all ofnusnin the same time in our respective languages, so that not a single soul could possibly deny what they just say. There's no way a worldwide mass hysteria could occur everywhere at the same time and in every language known to man. If that happened, there's no way anyone, even the most stubborn people, would be unable to believe, as that would be clear, 100% evidence, and if would be the only thing we would be able to prove with 100% certainty, assuming it also proved it's not some kind of alien running a simulation with absolute control of the system and can manipulate our programming so we could all hear it like they're the developers on a game server and it's a server side toast message.

Section 1: Evolution as Punishment] From a theological standpoint, linking the biblical narrative of the Fall of Man to the biological process of evolution is not new. The interpretation you've provided suggests that the labor, struggle, and eventual death described in Genesis can be seen as metaphorical for the evolutionary process. This view would resonate with some Christian thinkers who argue that the world's imperfections are a result of the original sin. However, mainstream science views evolution as a natural, non-teleological process that does not imply any moral judgment or punishment. Evolution, in the scientific context, is about adaptation and survival through genetic variation over generations, devoid of any inherent moral or punitive intent.
