The advice my EDC insurer offers for after a shooting (which does appear to be sage advice) is to call the police to report that you're the victim of a crime, call for help for yourself and/or the attacker, give location and describe yourself, and then inform dispatch that you've got to call your lawyer so you're hanging up (and if you prefer, add "I'll answer any further questions as soon as my attorney gets here"), and then HANG UP AND CALL YOUR ATTORNEY.
@ItsShatter

Advice I’ve heard was never to hang up on dispatch. Stay on the line to follow instructions, but refuse to answer questions.
@richardefriend

@@ItsShatter Then unless you've called your EDC insurance plan lawyer before calling 911, you're gonna be at a real disadvantage when the cavalry finally arrives. Once dispatch has the where , what and who, there's no further need to keep them on. They're not a security blanket.

@@richardefriend well if they let you go/ give permission then that’s one thing, but if you hang up on them before they’ve been able to fully assess / get an accurate understanding of the scene they are sending officers towards then that could put your life in danger.

stuff that should be covered... having worked as an officer of the law for thirty years... many times #1) crooks are under the influence that break into homes.. #2) they aren't always alone, perhaps an awaiting crook nearby in a vehicle. Having said that people who are under the influence from speed to PCP show or have enormous amounts of strength with many times running on adrenaline and the drug itself meaning that even if the person is shot... that doesn't necessarily mean that the threat has been stopped! As a general rule #1) I've taken the weapon OUT of the perpetrator's hand(s) and away from the body once making sure that this threat has been neutralized and when available have handcuffed the person and then make sure that this person isn't alone and then check vital while having someone call 911! there are some other habits that should be learned when dealing with breakins... ty..

Yeah they got a place called prison for people that have a hard time stopping what they're doing when they're wrong. We had the same thing with a simple assault. Some kids were hanging out in the alley playing the radio and an old guy came out with a board and threatened them and told them to get out of the alley and quit playing music. They took the board away from the old guy. That eliminated the threat then they beat the old guy with the board. That's where they became the criminals. If you get work up and shoot the wrong guy or shoot at somebody that's not a threat anymore that's running away man you can be in some trouble. You should be in trouble for these things because when there's no threat to you you're a risk to everybody that you might do something with a pistol nobody claims they can do MISS

I have applied for a concealed carry permit in Colorado. I will also order a small, discreet body cam. They can run for several hours (battery and recording time). I'll just start it up every time I leave the house. If I am involved in a self-defense incident, I am undecided whether to turn the recording over to the cops or say nothing and turn it over to my attorney for him to deliver a copy to the cops. Evidence in the hands of the police can mysteriously "disappear". Especially if it shows you are innocent.

I have been a USCCA member since 5/26/2022. I prey to GOD that I never am forced into a self defense scenario. Any time I leave my house, I am hyper aware of my surroundings. If I can run, that's preferable to getting into a gunfight. I used to carry an 8shot 1911style pistol in.45acp. But, because criminals do run in packs, I changed to a high capacity 9mm. Everyone who carries a pistol, should also carry pepper spray and an individual first aid kit ON YOUR BELT. It does absolutely no good if your medical kit is sitting in your vehicle.

Your very first point is why I would never suggest shooting until your empty like most people say. You shoot till the threat is gone. And no more. In my case it was 3 shots. If my 3rd would have hit it would have been a difficult argument for self defense because the guy was starting to retreat. But in the heat of the moment the reaction time from see deadly threat to this person is no longer a threat can take a longer time then deciding the person was a threat in the first place. That is why alot of attackers are shot in the back. Because the threat leaving hasn't registered yet. And in most cases you don't realize it but your in a state of shock.

BECAUSE: 911 calls are recorded & will be used as evidence to charge you and be played at trial. The Operator is NOT the person you need to tell this to, the Investigating Officers and Interrogators are. That simple phrase recorded in a 911 call can and most likely will be twisted in every way possible to create the narrative that you weren’t cooperating and obstructing the investigation from the very beginning. This why he explains what you should say, what info to give during the call and nothing more. EVERY single word you say will be dissected and can be twisted to fit the prosecutors narrative of “Your crime” during the incident.

All you have to do is put enough passion into training EVERY WEEK, and yeah spend ALOT of money doing it. If you do this , there will be no need for more than 3 shots or 6. No state has a statute that requires you make a 911 call. An "excited utterance" will be played to a jury. Never call 911. Have someone else call 911 at your direction.

Hmm, why then when police shoot and kill a suspect, do they continue to dump their mags? We've all seen that, even with multiple officers on one subject.

You can never shoot at someone who is running away. If an attacker is in range and still has the weapon in a position to attack you they are still a threat.

But if the person you shot STILL has a weapon, he is a danger to others and the threat has not been stopped. Just because he running away from YOU doesn't mean he is no longer a threat to somebody else.

This is only for police officers: The US Supreme Court ruled in Tennessee v. Garner that a police officer may use deadly force to prevent the escape of a fleeing suspect only if the officer has a good-faith belief that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others.

Why would you say this much to 911? Tell them where you are and to send help, and hang up. Don’t say half of this on a recorded line with no attorneys

You kind of missed the point moving evidence is beyond lying by about a factor of 10. If they ask you how many times you shot like you did one of the guys in your scenarios and you say three and there were five shots fired that's lying. When you change the evidence that's way past lying.

@@BigJon410 I'm aware of that, I think I should have the same right. If a criminal breaks into my home and I confront him and he flees I should be able to mag dump him as he flees.....ya know, for the good of the community. My problem with the law is that police almost always can fire well beyond "the threat has stopped" and it's A-ok but like the video says if I do it then I'm the aggressor. I've seen several dozens if not hundreds of videos of police firing 30, 40, 50 rounds at a suspect. I don't have a problem with that, I just think I should be able to do it too.
