Something I always recommend people to take a look are the ELO rankings for tennis, ELO is the way chess players are ranked and shows a much better picture of the level of players. Peak Andreescu(2019) has the 6th highest ELO of active players, below Venus(2002), Azarenka(2013), Swiatek, Zvonareva and Kvitova. This gives a good picture of how good a player was at the peak. She lost her forehand totally and her serve mostly. That's what's happened since 2019. She therefore went from a potential number one player to a top 50-100 player in her level. I'm not sure why. I tend to think she has lost some physical strength somewhere along the lines.
@usaskjock Жыл бұрын
she just does NOT move well enough. It's not that she's not athletic but if you watch her matches now once she falls behind in a rally and virtually never is able to get back into it. So it's putting too much pressure on her first strike game, which is good but not spectacular. Her 2019 year was absolutely insane though. I still think she will have a good career and certainly has the talent to win another major (as does most of the top 30). However frequent the injuries, the fact that she’s only 23 means that anyone who is going to write her off risks looking an idiot. At that age she’s far better equipped to heal from them than if she was 30. Having had them more frequently does not necessarily mean she has a brittle body which will continue to be injury prone and can just be a case of unlucky timing. Looked at another way, it could even be better to get those injuries earlier when she’s able to heal better and faster. The break to deal with her mental health was exactly the right thing to do and it shows a lot of maturity even to take such a decision. Emma Raducanu may have done herself a huge favour if she had done the same, or similar, in early-mid 2022 when the initial excitement around her started to turn sour. Perhaps her own physical injuries forcing her to take a long break from the game can be a blessing in disguise, giving her the time to mentally reset and return with a renewed drive and hardened against the more negative aspects of fame and success? As sporting redemption stories go, a Raducanu vs. Andreescu GS final at sometime in the coming years would be a pretty good one! Now, this is just a hunch, but, I get the feeling that women like these two who have struggled mentally and have cycled through a number of coaches should try hiring females coaches. I don’t necessarily think it’s the answer for everyone, but I suspect that there could be something in their ability to connect with or trust their coaches. This doesn’t have to be the male coaches fault, it’s simply the case that some people just get on better with women, while others do with men, and where that’s the case, they may feel more comfortable discussing the mental/personal issues that they face. And it’s not as though their aren’t a lot of former champions who, in the past few years have found themselves… un-busy. And the marketing does itself! Imagine a grand slam final between Bianca and Emma but with a renewed rivalry between, say, Coach Clijsters and Coach Barty… Coach Kerber vs Coach Bartoli, Radwanska vs Li, or the dream match up: Williams vs Williams - The Coaching Years!

Bibi needs to sort out her physicality. She looks to be carrying a little more weight compared to other players, and I wonder if a drop in weight, and a change in diet (see Novak for example), would give her more speed AND more energy on court. Add to that, the process of dropping weight might also make her physically stronger if the right strength and conditioning was used. I dont think she needs anything technically, or tactically. She has those. But her body HAS let her down, and you have to begin asking why has it let her down, and what can be done to give it an extra few percentage points of efficiency.

It's hard to reach the top in any sport and it is even harder to stay there. Not only does the work ethic need to be sustained but the hunger as well. The rewards that come from winning a U.S. Open often have an adverse effect on both. Nothing wrong with her talent but talent alone doesn't cut it. Honestly not much reason to cut to you talking either, especially when you don't start off the video talking into camera, it caught me off-guard when it cut to you partway through. So if it were me I'd start off talking into camera and introducing the video, then adding the other footage.

I was never a fan of Andrescu. She is a great talent no doubt. But the hype around her during her 2019 peak season kinda put me off. I understand WTA is in desperate need of the next megastar. But judging a player by one single season never seems like a good idea to me. Young upstarts like Bianca needs a few years to get used to the intensity of the tour and devleop their game gradually so they can be a consistently solid player. Peaking too soon sometimes does more harm than good. Having a great season is easy but keeping the level high for years is an uphill battle. You have to have big weapons and keep imrpoving. Over the years so many one slam players flopped right after having the best season and never got back to where they used to be. I believe the injuries and Covid hiatus greatly undermined her confidence as a player. Watched many of her matches last year. She seemed like a lost soul on court, forgetting what kinda player she should be. Luckily she showed positive signs during Miami this year. But two major injuries in one single season really put a big question mark on the longevity of her tennis career. I hope she get her confidence back and be a formidable force on tour.

It's become a pattern with these young girls who win a Slam pretty much out of nowhere and then descend into crises for a while. Andreescu, Kenin, Ostapenko, Raducanu. I think it's because tennis has become a world sport with intense media coverage, fans being a nuisance with social media and online betting, and the women's game becoming a lot more competitive. It has always been a challenge for young girls basically to grow up in the public eye, but is exacerbated by the things mentioned.

This heavy hitting & relentless side to side ( with little finesse) wrecks their bodies - look at Kennan , Osaka or Radacarnu I d say 70% plus of the really successful teens like her & the above , - mostly peak around 20 yrs or earlier - then physically go down fast from there Keep an eye on Swaitec to go a similar trajectory ....
