It's not a kilt in the true sense of the garment. It's not in any recognisable clan tartan, it's not got a sporran, it's got pockets and it appears to be made of denim. It's a skirt and they only put him (briefly) in a kilt in the 2023 Christmas special as a "soft entry" (oo-er Missus) for cross dressing him like this. Gatwa's admitted he and the costume designer looked at costume concepts that included skirts. Not kilts. SKIRTS. I'm multiple - generation English and I'm STILL qualified to wear at least three tartans, possibly four, from family antecedents and graduating from a Scottish university. Don't recall Clan McGatwa from the Scottish Register of Tartans. As for the rest of what's featured, it just comes across as a smug, recycled mash - up of Smith and Jones and Partners in Crime - one of those low - effort, "Hey, I'm introducing a new regular companion so I can focus on that and come up with a lazy - arse, banal concept for the plot/concept/villain" episodes that STD just about managed to get away with back when wasting an entire episode was less reprehensible with 12 episodes left. Less forgivable when you've only got an 8 - episode run.

I shouldn't have to say it, but most Doctor Who fans are not racist. Sci fi fans, in my experience, usually aren't. We tend to be more open-minded. I don't want to marginalise non white actors in any way, but remember that many of the people watching (those of us still watching anyway) are white. Shock horror!! I'm not saying the Doctor has to be white or the companion, but maybe one of them should be or have more than one companion, perhaps. I also dont like attempts to rewrite history, like race swapping real historical characters, like Sir Issac Newton or having people of colour as guests at a party in Regency England, as though that was normal in that era. It's annoying as I like history, and the show was originally supposed to be semi educational. I've no problem with historically accurate portrayals of ethnic groups. Don't shy away from the bad aspects of the past, like slavery and segregation, etc. Surely, that's more anti racist than saying "hey look everyone was equal in the past when we know they weren't." Obviously, this is just one scene, so I'm sure there will be white characters in the series. Anyway, rant over.

I have mentioned before how ncuti was placed in really good parts of Scotland..In Edinburgh i had to pay through nose for my child to be at same school ncuti went to...the rentals for even a one bedroom are insane..it's also a beautiful historic part near hill, pool, center of town. Him badmouthing his 'opportunities' made my blood boil...he was given an amazing start even for a scottish kid...one i've toiled to give my own son..and he just spoke as if he's been held back, held down because black and gay...no he soared., was loved by teachers and students very much..then flipped the finger at them all..all the way to drama school which seemingly taught him nothing as he only emotes black and gay for some reason...anyway....you can't shit on scotland then wear kilts...

I see Ncuti Gatwa running around in 'designer' clothes, I don't see the Doctor. And while the lack of discipline is a major problem with this relaunched series, it is also by now undeniable that Ncuti Gatwa's lack of actual acting ability is another major problem. What IS acting? I would say that with the Doctor the best actors in the role show that they are invested in the part, are _thinking_ on what they are doing, and draw you along with them as they play out the story at hand. When David Tennant stepped out of the regeneration two years ago he was the Doctor, he was also an actor - you can see him invested in what he is doing, thinking out the scene, and you believe in him. Davison had it. Smith had it, Capaldi had it, all good character actors who were professional, and pulled you into the story by believing in what they were doing, and taking it seriously. Whitaker wasn't like that. And neither is Gatwa. David Tennant showed up for three episodes and you believed in him. He threw the series a brief lifeline, and then it was gone. So here i am, watching the Inexperienced Ncuti Gatwa flap around and play himself, no thought put into it, no one advising him, and as with Whitaker no sign of him developing. He isn't putting any thought into any of it. But in his defence I don't think he is getting good management either, and is being dressed up as 'Ncuti Gatwa', not the Doctor. So he really reminds me a little of the floundering Sylvester McCoy in his debut story...

I’ve just finished the pyramid or mars, haven’t seen it in a long time. I’d forgotten how good Doctor who used to be and realise I really missed it and haven’t seen a real episode since Capaldi left and his last season was fairly bad.
