In this episode of our Kettlebell Lifestyle series, Justin teams up with Kettlebell Master of Sport Mike Salemi (@kettlebelllifestyle and kettlebelllifestyle.com) to determine the best grip and hand placement to improve and maximize your kettlebell swing effectiveness.
Talking points:
Should the thumb be pointed forward?
Should the palm be pointed down?
Should the thumb be pointed back?
-None of them is wrong
-What’s the intent behind each one?
-Start off with thumb pointed straight
-Turn it over
-Thumb back
-With thumbs back notice that the wrist elbow and shoulder can move = most degrees of freedom
-Preferred for those with a deeper back swing
-After you arms lose contact with the body you’ll end up in a more neutral position
-Mike prefers thumbs up to set the shoulders
-As the bell swings down you make connection between the arms and the torso earlier than with the thumb back
-Less going on with the thumb up and less variables
-Back, Forward, Insert, Set the kettlebell
-Start out most neutral ( horizontally placed)
-Thumb back a little inside
-Observe and see how you feel
-Grab a coach or record a video
Single arm swing
-With the free arm you want to mirror your loaded arm
-Allow the arm to swing back
-You can use the free arm to guide the swing
-Do not be like Frankenstein
-There should be no pushing off the legs or contact with the leg
