What’s the Best USA Boot? - Who cares, what's the best boot in the world? Please look beyond the USA more for your footwear reviews. You seem to be a bit US obsessed. Your video on barefoot shoes for example didn't even mention the originators and market leaders Vivobarefoot, probably because they aren't a USA company or have a big presence there. Maybe you should broaden your horizons when considering the footwear to review.

I really think sizing is so challenging for all boots really, PNW or not, largely because of the "break in" consideration. Leather is so variable; sometimes it has some give, sometimes not. Ultimately this idea that you will buy one size with the understanding it will likely change over time definitely throws a spanner in the works in how people approach considering what a good fit should be from day one- usually with a bias they need to be slightly tight so that you can mould them to your feet et.c.

Speaking of work boots, the ones you see a lot on the jobsite outside of Thorogood and Red Wing are Irish Setters. They're just a bit more affordable and most get either the Ashby or Wingshooter (both moc toes). Keens have also had a surprising showing as well, I have their Cincinnati's and love them.

They are a stitchdown PNW logger boot with leather heal stack, leather insole, leather midsole, 7-8 oz leather uppers. They keep cost down using the outer cuts of the hide where there might be some wrinkling or stretch marks or “less desirable” marks that you wouldn’t put in the $500-$600 boot. Made in the USA in the pacific north west. $350

Excellent video per usual dude. You mentioned a few times how the Origin boot sources primarily domestic materials. My question would be: how much of RW boots use imported materials? My other note would be that another difference between imported and domestic (U.S.) manufacturers would generally be worker QOL, wages, stricter safety and health regulations etc etc. I say generally because it seems most of the overseas boot makers you feature are very reputable, hand crafted, etc. and likely are not the same as the typical imported products. The point still is worth mentioning though

The sizing was my only issue with ordering my Nick's tankers. I figured I sized correctly, but I was just a little bit too small. The boots were damn near spot on, but they were just too tight to where there was no breaking them in to be comfortable. Fortunately they do offer a resize, but I feel bad doing that because a fair bit went into making them. Fortunately when I ordered my Muggs, they were sized correctly, because having to do a return trip to the UK would have been kinda sucky. With the Nick's, it's just a short trip East for me.

Danner would be another good one to do at some point. I think they’re made in the US, and it looks like an interesting comparison to the Jim Green Razorbacks or Baobab boots since they’re both stitchdown construction with a rubber cemented sole. Is Danner worth $500 when Jim Green is out there?
@EssenceofPureFlavor
@EssenceofPureFlavor Жыл бұрын
I don't think Jim Green and Danner are that similar. The $500 Danners are boots like the Super Rainforest. As far as I know, Jim Green doesn't make anything at that level. Jim Greens are of course way cheaper so may be a better value, but it depends what you need them for.
@notthatproud7453

I hadn’t looked at Danner’s website and was sort of guessing at the price. But the Mountain Light is $440. I think that’s their classic hiking boot. It looks nearly identical to the Razorback. I don’t own either of these boots, but at one point I was really lusting after the Danners-something about that classic hiking boot look. I’m sure there are differences between the two. What I love about rose anvil is we get to see those differences in close detail.

Some Danners are made in the US. Some say made in the USA but are mostly made overseas but have just enough work done in the US to be called made in the USA. I like Danners and used to visit their outlet store a lot when I worked nearby. BTW, they are owned by 5he same company that owns whites.
@EssenceofPureFlavor

@@Kingfisher1215 That's not how FTC rules work. If something says "made in the USA" it has to be "all or virtually all" US components. There are imported Danners and Danners made from imported components yes, but they're labeled either made in China/Infonesia/whatever" or "Assembled in USA" or "Made in USA of imported components."

FYI Weinbrenner uses Horween leather for the Thorogood boots, and the max wear wedge outsoles have MADE IN USA moulded into them. The COO for the entire boot is on the label, which means that MADE IN USA on the outsole means the outsole is made here. There are standards for MADE IN USA too, so certain percentage of American components and labor are required. American leather, American made cushion insole, and an American made outsole. I don't know what components are imported, but it's not these 3 major parts.

@@garysprague2009 It was in a factory you'r video I watched that I can no longer find. I don't know where the " sewn overseas " idea came from, it's theoretically possible but they would have to label them as built or assembled in the USA not Made in the USA. There are percentage requirements.

Generally find them from former soldiers or surplus supply for around $50 unworn or slightly used and they last from 3-5 years. Hard to beat that for value and you can get summer vented ones or waterproof gortex. Not that I'm not completely sold on the bison JKs and am planning on a couple different pairs of those...

About the sizing issue, where boots are all coming in different sizes from the different companies. I see this issue with clothing as well. So I tend to stick to certain brands so that I know how they are sized and I don't need to guess. I bought a pair of Danner boots and found they run small and narrow. So eventually I bought another pair of Danners and I got a half size up and wide width and they fit great. You can also buy some from Amazon Prime to try on and return them.

Look I don’t have any issue with the components that Jk uses in the 300’s[x)! However, the fit and finish, i.e. sole grinding/trimming is noticeably inferior to the higher end Jk models. I would, and have, chosen the Perry selects as a better choice. Granted they’re not the same style, moc-toe vs round but, they both use the same Christy outsole! And for similar price points, Whites uses better leather with more color options. JK’s offers more width choices.

I love these analysis videos. I do woodworking work inside, usually standing, but on wooden floors. My work boot (and some casual wear) preferences are Whites (semi dress and cruiser), JK 300s, Trumans (cap toes) and Red Wings (cap toes and moc toes). The Whites are pricy but built to last for years and are rebuildable. The JKs are top-quality as well, and price-wise within spitting distance of similar Red Wings. Truman boots-like Red Wing-use top quality leather (2.2-2.4mm thick leather) and they use old-style lasts. I love the Truman 79 last fit and look as well as Red Wing #8 last. Red Wing has some great leathers; I wish they would make an iron ranger with a nice thicker leather midsole. Keep up the great work/content!

As for the sizing issue: the problem is that a lot of sneaker companies are vanity sized. The same way that commercial jeans are vanity sized - you buy a pair of 34's and if you measure them it's more like 37". The heritage selvedge denim companies often size their stuff true to size so that you measure it, it's 34", that's a 34. With sneakers it goes the other way - I guess having big feet is cool, so if you wear a 12 in Adidas you're probably actually an 11 on a Brannock device or in dress shoes. Most of the boot companies are sized more like dress shoes in this regard as their sizing is more accurate to dress shoes than a sneaker would be. Another part of the problem is flexibility. You can missize all day in crappy sneakers because the materials are so flexible and forgiving that it doesn't matter as long as your foot isn't crushed or swimming around. With a sturdy leather boot, however, there's much less wiggle room and they kind of demand a more accurate fit. That's why the PNW brands go through all the trouble of having a million sizes and widths available and do things like the fit sheets to nail it down. If you have a really generic foot shape, just standardizing the sizes would work, but many people have non-standard foot shapes and benefit from things like narrow or wide widths, mismate sizing between left and right, split sizing lasts with wider forefoot and narrower heel, or simply different lasts altogether. For example, the 38 Swing last that White's uses has a lower arch and very wide forefoot, more like the Alden Trubalance or the Corcoran Jump Boot, but the MP last is much narrower, the packer lasts have an insane arch, etc. Knowing all of the details about your foot size can not only help you nail down your size in their company's shoes but also figure out which lasts will even work for you.

That’s an interesting possibility. I decided to order some boots back in December. Normally I wear an 12.5 or 13 in sneakers. Some Nikes are 13s, some 12.5s. I had a pair of new balance 990v5s a few years back and the 13 was too big. For the boots, I went and did a brannock just to be safe. I came out at a 13D. Ordered my boots at 12.5D based on the manufacturer recommendation. Still waiting to get them though. The lead time thing is pretty ridiculous. Anyway, point is, I don’t think it’s all that hard.

@@notthatproud7453 I mean every single PNW bootmaker has long lead times now. Nick's and Wesco used to be the worst for it but now it's all of them. It's supply chain issues mainly, plus slowness to recover from covid-related disruptions. These are small companies building a lot of things to order so patience is par for the course. I guess in the world of being able to get whatever mass-produced junk next day via Amazon people can't really deal with having to wait for something nice that's custom.

Hey Weston I think you should try out the Red Wing Roughnecks or maybe a review? They're killer compared to the Moc, built on the same last, yet with a vibram lug sole they're on site right now!

Good stuff! For future non-MITUSA boots, I would love to see more Ariat (Booker Ultra Western Boot specifically), and maybe a few other types of boots from REDBACK (The OMAHA boot is one I'm very curious about...looks a lot like a timberland style boot.)

Amen to sizing. Pushed towards the red wing because I can try them on locally, but really want to buy from a smaller maker. Kind of tempted to catch a flight to PNW to get sized. Also, wish the MITUSA series had a "regardless of price" category. I'm going to spend more time in my boots than anything else in my life.

I love these videos. Super informative, raw and real. Looking forward to more and hoping one day my question will pop up there: If you had to pick one boot to live with for the rest of your life out of All the boots you have ever reviewed, which would you pick?

A British Boot Off would be great. Solovair, William Lennon, Loake, Cheaney, Grenson, Barker, Hoggs, Sanders, Trickers, Alfred Sargeant, Crockett & Jones... I'd have said Church's but they're priced up with the top tier now & unaffordable. There's a good few other companies making desert boots and the like, e.g. Crown Northampton and Jadd

Fantastic Q&A. Video suggestion: Would you consider doing a side by side video comparing the JK 300x (black) against the Nicks Tactical? Both are PNW boots with similar style. Is the Nicks Tactical really worth $170 more?

Adding to the group of people who want to see some "dressier" boots cut in half. Meermin, AE Higgins Mill, Alden Indy, John Lofgren, Becket Simonon. I feel like there's a lot of meat on that bone and I personally want to know how these shoes are made and which are best in terms of construction, material quality and value.
