Samus sees herself in the Metroid while she sees her as its Ridley...that's actually a nice bit of symbolism.

I think they both recognized something similar in each other - they BOTH saw family. Samus may have seen her lost innocence and a chance to recapture hope in this new life, but I think Samus hesitated mostly because the baby regarded her as a mother figure rather than either prey or a predator. It didn't see her as food. It also wasn't frightened of her. It saw a kind of kinship. Why? I think this revealed to Samus a deep similarity between herself and Metroids. It's easy to think of Metroids as nothing but ravenous killing machines. But to the Metroids, Samus is the ruthless, heartless killer. This innocent creature didn't know this, though, and its actions suddenly put the Metroids' behavior in a very different light: they're not mindless killers, they're intelligent beings, defending themselves from an invader. By mistaking Samus for a Metroid, the baby's actions essentially pointed out that Samus had become just as cold and murderous as the Metroids - a quality the baby innocently thought of as being a capable defender and parent rather than a threat. Given her childhood, this is a revelation that would have struck home very hard. Her parents died defending her. Now she had a chance to be something her parents could never be for her. That's why this moment was so powerful for her.

Timothy Haldane That gives a whole new meaning to Metroid Fusion where Samus's life is saved by the DNA of the infant Metroid and the SA-X is created She regards the SA-X as a mindless killing machine which it is but she is part metroid now It's like the SA-X to Samus is what she was to the metroids
@6powersofM7 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of dialoge in Fusion, and puts it into a new perspective. "The X hunger for form, knowledge, and power. They mimic these perfectly. But they cannot copy the soul. They're single-minded, instinctively seeking to increase in number. They're a plague, and the Federation underestimates their threat." This explains why Samus refused to kill off the metroids to extinction, but had no hesitation to do the same to the X. She had realised that metroids (if they are not telepathically controlled by Mother Brain) are capable of having feelings, but the X on the other hand are not.
@DawnOfLightX6 жыл бұрын
Shiny Samurott that figuratavely (maybe literally...?) Means that even though the infant Metroid is dead, it's still with her and it's still protecting her. Just in the form of DNA...it sounds comforting putting it like that.
@LyfSukz6 жыл бұрын
Why did it see a kinship? Maybe because the shape of Samus's helmet vaguely resembles the form of a Metroid. Closely enough for a newborn anyway.
@elliotlevy86107 жыл бұрын
Other M's biggest mistake story-wise was trying to do too much in one game. In attempting to explore BOTH her mourning of the Baby and her history with Adam, the result was the Metroid got too little attention for us to relate to Samus while her relationship with Adam felt too out of place with the rest of the story. The Metroid is the key to the entire character development of Samus. Without it the game falls short.
@TheOrpheon7 жыл бұрын
I agree, I would have given the Baby a much bigger focus since its the key to Samus current mood and holds a overall big impact in the overall story of the games (can't have a Metroid game without Metroid?) The other thing that had a bit disappointed was that before the games release it was sold to us with showing Samus backstory, so its really a shame we didn't get any of that outside of Adam (growing up with the Chozo, relations to Mother Brain or Ridley, etc)
@TallFry27 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can see your point pretty well. I think she had a serious crisis of confidence, and that was something Adam caught onto, hence stupid choices. But yeah, I agree that if they had kept it simpler, it would have gone over a lot better.
@SandWhich247 жыл бұрын
Elliot Levy not only that but they didn't develope on Samus's and Adam's relationship. like yeah we know he's her commanding officer but that's it? we never actually get cutscenes where they were actually bonding or talking about something they both remember. like they pretty much had a communication device to talk with one another and that completely went down to drain to Adam mostly just barking orders and nothing else. The fact that they didn't do something like "oh hey Adam how's everything been since I last saw you" type conversation really made their relationship seem stale. and of course Samus just looking like a complete fool projecting her feelings on to him. The Baby really should have been the primary focus.
@Erika-gn1tv6 жыл бұрын
They could have linked the themes together by making Adam be mad at Samus for not killing the Metroid Infant. It fits with a lot of the other stuff like Adam not trusting Samus with her gear and the stuff with his little brother. He doesn't trust Samus to do the right thing and she has to explain her actions a little more to gain his trust again. He should also talk things out with her and _not shoot her in the back_ as he did. And in the end he trust her to finish things after he dies, Samus accepts his sacrifice and everybody has some character development in the end. Huzzah.
@generaljimmies34296 жыл бұрын
One of the things the devs could have done to flesh out her history with Adam and the Federation would be this: Have you noticed as you travel through all those hallways and corridors it's always...quiet. Why not have some radio chatter between Samus and her squad mates as she's traveling from place to place, reminiscing about the "good ol' days".

I agree with you completely, when I first playthrough Other M I've realize that Samus is acting like any mother who has just witness their child get kill. In a way she has relate so much to the baby since if the baby was born a couple of moments before Samus destroy the queen, it would've witness the same sight of it mother being taken away from her and when it sacrifice itself to save samus for the mother brain fight she questions what if I did that to save my parents. The baby I think is the greatest character in the Metroid series right alongside Samus.

This theory is actually in some way, remotely accurate, not directly or officially said to be canon, but it might explain a plot point that's overlooked, or expected to be understood immediately in the games. ... also it could justify the 'Baby Metroid' crap in other M(just not all of it.)
@TheOrpheon7 жыл бұрын
I feel that this (and many other of) Other M's plot lines where severely overlooked because of them trying to focus on one topic to many (The baby/Adam/Samus Past/Ridley/Madeline and Melissa/etc) If the game had one or two things to focus it could have been a different outcome. And with this video, I wanted to propose what could have been the initial mentality behind the writing of the game... that we never got to see
@AnjnShan7 жыл бұрын
I can see that fairly well, your theory makes sense. They could've also brought the Chozo, and important details.

THAT is why I like Other M, because it is accurate to how she would feel. To be honest, I understood all of this from the get-go. Being one to suffer trauma like that, I understand how Samus would feel, and I imagine its hard for others who have not felt this to understand.

It was a nice way to give her a more human side, makes her look all the stronger when you realize she is a regular person in a power armor (with some Chozo DNA) I hope if there is sequel take to this character exploration, that it takes place outside of the main series to allow the character to grow outside the established storyline

Hey Orpheon, are you happy with how Samus Returns portrayed Samus relationship with the baby Metroid? Personally, I loved everything about it. How Samus charged her ice beam immediately to shoot, only to hesitate when she realized that the baby was harmless. How the baby floats happily around her. How you need the baby to collect some items, which is a great way to bond with your new Metroid. And finally, that last boss battle! Were you satisfied to see this development between Samus and the baby Metroid? I think that it spoke great volumes into Samus and her mind set towards the baby, a great characterization told through cutscenes and game play without words. I loved it! :D And to be fair, the baby Metroid was insanely cute!
@TheOrpheon7 жыл бұрын
Yes I am pretty happy how Samus Returns handled the way Samus reacts to the baby metroid, especially without requiring any dialogue or exposition. I thought that the way the baby was implemented as a power up of sorts makes a great bond between the baby and the player which makes its sacrifice in Super Metroid all the more heartbreaking. I always thought Motherly instinct was also part of what explained this, but yeah the fact she was basically Ridley to this Metroid also always explained why she adopted the baby to me. I guess remorse at commiting near-genocide and the desire to avoid turning the baby into a killing machine like the Chozo had done to her might be part of why she chose to give the baby....that or maybe galactic law lol. Also I just discovered your channel and I love it, which is why I'm commenting on a year old video lol.

I mean, for just the trigger, it could be just because she witnessed the hatching of one. Shes in the presence of a baby, that's now orphaned, that she saw hatch with her own eyes, that she created being an orphan. If you have a good heart and If you killed a mama duck for food, survival, or as an accident, and saw it had an egg that just happen to hatch, there's a chance sympathy will kick in and you might wanna protect it, guilt and grief plus protecting innocence and seeing potential are great potential motivators. Ultimately, I don't think its anything more that that, she just sympathized.

I think it might also be some sort of a motherly love kind of thing. The Baby Metroid imprinted upon her as its mother. She watched it affectionately float around her, as it helped her explore and escape the planet. She is definitely a very stoic woman, but she is still a woman. Maybe in some small way, she imprinted on the Metroid too, possibly having been lonely after never really having been part of normal human society since the age of three. Yes, she lived with the Chozo, and yes, she had a brief stint in the Federation, but i'm sure it was difficult or impossible for her to reintegrate perfectly with the rest of them. I dunno. Of course, this can definitely be taken too far as well, as seen in Other M, but female characters actually maving feminine or motherly traits would be nice to see, especially in the era of woke corporations and Mary Sues overruning media. Nintendo never bowed to them as of yet, but I think if they explored this side of Samus' personality more, it might be a nice, albeit relatively small, counter-depiction of women in games.

6:07 the manga. I know enough about Metroid to know that samus sees herself as Ridley and the Metroid as herself. I haven’t watched past that point yet.

I really like Other M. It's a fun game with a meh story. Honestly, all the backlash is kind've a shame because it means we won't see another game in the same engine, most likely. I'd have loved another game with the same gameplay mechanics.

I agree, so much so that I made a video in the past on how the mechanic could be enhance (its titled: "Metroid on Switch" if you are curious, its obviously made months before Prime 4's reveal) My issue with the story was that it tried focusing on one theme to many (baby/adam/ridley/MB/Deleter/etc) that nothing got the chance to fully flesh out

Brandon Johnson if only she was real...if only she was real :/ Actually with the advancing technology we have, we could eventually create robots that look just like humans and program them to have memories. We could actually create a Samus robot with memories of every event that happened in the games. That thought might become a reality *._.* Buuuuut that's also just a thought. It might be decades, maybe centuries before we figure out THAT kind of technology.

My problems with Metroid other m is how they take away samus’ agency. The how “you don’t shoot unless I say so” would have been fine if samus had done something about it like ignore him, but no. Also the fact that in nearly every cutscenes we can see samus’ face, taking away from her self confidence as making every cutscenes remind us of her helpless state in her zero suit. Also I love your videos.

Imo it makes sense for Samus to follow orders like that even from a bounty hunter prospective but what truly doesn't make sense is why the Varia suit is disabled aside for gameplay reasons.

Samus Returns does also expand a bit on Samus' history with the baby metroid a bit too. I still think they may have focused on it a bit much in the story for what little explanation they gave. But I'd be happy to even have had it rationalized like this. I had always figured that maybe she saw the baby metroid as a lone shred of hope in a galaxy filled with space pirates, sentient planets, space dragons, organic supercomputers that destroyed her home planet.

Dude... thanks for the video! I always thought it was quite obvious her trauma and the way she saw it different was due to him being the first she ever saw hatch and you can see the innocence and joy he had after watching her thinking it was his mother... so many things could come through her mind at that moment *including guilt* that the least she could do was let him stay alive for research but even that was a mistake because it leads to him dying sacrificing for her later on... how can that not be traumatic after everything she went through... the only thing that purely cared for her gone like that.

Just thought I'd point out one of my favorite parallels in this series: The space pirates refer to Samus as 'The Hunter.' The chozo word 'metroid' means... ...'hunter.' Samus is a metroid.

"Samus isn't completely heartless" Metroid Fusion: "The SA-X is me, but only heartless." I don't have much to say about this but I do know it makes sense, I only quoted it because it reminded me of what Samus says in the elevator the second time in Fusion

I.... really think Other M gets a bad wrap. Like... I'm never, EVER going to defend the story, but the setting itself was still kinda interesting, it was cool to get some time with federation soldiers in a joint mission, and the gameplay was GREAT. Heck, we have Other M to thank for some of the new mechanics we get here in 2 weeks with Samus Returns.
@TheOrpheon7 жыл бұрын
Other M's gameplay was a lot of fun, and the Varia Suit was finally made more practical, my main issue with the story is that i lacks focus, so it tries to tackle one theme at a time and nothing truly got to flourish
