Being clumsy is one of the most humiliating of scenarios. We need to learn to make friends with our ‘inner idiot’.

“Our clumsiness can feel like one of the most shameful things about us. We spill, fall over, drop, smash… Clumsiness violates our self-image as a competent grown-up. It introduces us to a figure we may for a long time have been very keen to escape from: the Inner Idiot. We are liable to hate our Inner Idiot from afar, with a grim face, and to try to deny its reality. But in our clumsy moments, we’re reminded that the Idiot is still there, prompting us to drop the phone in the toilet bowl and forget important people’s names at a party…”

An hour ago i dropped a red liquid medicine I just bought on a new trousers I have. I felt very clumsy and had exactly this trail of thought that's presented here. Why am I not growing up? My parents always accentuated that I'm extraordinarily clumsy. I've been washing the trousers for fifteen minutes. Now the video popped up like a magic fortune cookie message that just saves your day. School of life, you're absolutely amazing. The thing is, beating yourself over it wont do you any good. if it is to a point where it is affecting your professional life then you can either get some professional help or you can try to switch fields. Probably pick something where dropping a thing wouldnt cause a lot of trouble. We need to understand that we are humans and humans make mistakes. Panic will only cause more mistakes

As a child I was always told by my elders about how clumsy I was. I was told to be more mindful of my movements and to stop being careless. I was often times told to "grow up" (regarding how clumsy I was). Now as an an adult I find myself thinking why I never grew up in that sense. It takes a toll on me, makes me feel stupid and like I'll never amount to anything. Sometimes I wonder if anyone could ever possibly be as clumsy as me.

No... If there's a record for clumsiness, absent-mindedness, or just plain F---ing stuff up, it's mine. I've learned over the years of trial and hard effort to improve my grace and attentive mentality, that... You just can't change the nature of things. SO I have long turned to outright humorism. It's really as simple as that. E.G. Dribble a little juice down my front, staining instantly the new designer shirt... It was in a Waffle House, across the street from an interview for employment in less than fifteen (15) minutes. For a moment, as a few nearby patrons giggled (along with the platinum haired waitress) I glared down at the growing stain and pulp smeared on the shirt in the ever bleeding line to the trousers... Then I up-ended the glass to add its remaining contents and grinned maniacally, "F--- it!" I paid the tab, and walked out, trailing the juice behind me as I marched straight across the street to the imminent interview, leaving the patrons of the diner in fits of laughter. Weirdly enough, I even got the job. The clothes weren't necessarily hopeless, but my sudden willingness to jump into the work (electro-mechanical) during the interview was enough for the boss to simply give me a time to start the following week. 2. It's a common occurrence for something I've sat on a counter or table to get bumped off, either by me or someone else (usually anxious to see what else I'm doing)... I just turn to the offended (fallen) object and retort, "Well... fall, damn ya'... See if I care!" And regardless of who might be "at fault", it turns into a relaxed session of laughs instead of fuming about losses (which can get expensive) or what not... Bottom line? Don't cry over spilt milk. It's only going to earn you ulcers and headaches (migraines if you're not careful)... Laughter, making light of it, on the other hand, releases stress and reminds us that we are ALL human. Giving others a bit of slack when they knock the expensive glass paperweight on the floor (-$300) generally coaxes them to give us some slack when we do something equally "stupid" or "klutsy"... :o)

Lately I've noticed the cause of the majority of my 'kluzt-like' behaviour: it's being lost in thought. Whenever spill/break/... something, I notice, that the moment just before the accident I was thinking about a problem or making up a narrative in my head , rather than focusing on what I was doing. So I would advise (myself and others) to focus ,and the Klutz inside of us will bother us a bit less.

I was a clumsy kid. Still am, but I wear myself out trying to be present/careful. It's getting slightly better. When I was about 13, I went on a camping trip with my dad. He got to see me for a few days a month. Always looked up to Dad and his wife's happy marriage / financial comfort. I wanted to live with them because my mother was abusive to my brother and I... but felt welcome in my dad's family. I was fake sleeping when I heard my stepmom say: "I don't like her being with us. She breaks everything." What's bad is, I didn't break anything that week. It seemed out of the blue. What's worse is my dad kept silent. That stayed with me.

My dad used to yell and shout and carry on at me about how stupid and careless I was if I dropped anything, even something that didn't really matter like a fork or a piece of paper. I was endlessly anxious and just filled with self-loathing if I ever did something klutzy. Then one day a friend saw me spill the change out of my wallet and she said to me "oo you haven't paid your gravity bill!", then we had a big old laugh about it. Changed my life! Now if I do something clumsy it's a cause for sharing a funny moment instead of feeling shame and dread. And because I'm not anxious about it, I don't tend to be clumsy. Even if I'm alone I tell the thing off that I dropped, it makes me giggle. Friends are the family you choose :)

Meh. I'm clumsy and I am ok with it. It's become a part of my identity. I'm ADHD and am pretty sure it has EVERYTHING to do with my clumsy. I have terrible proprioception. I sometimes don't understand how my body interacts with the world around it. I shake hands a little too hard, or, I pat people on the head with more force than intended. I am so caught up in thought, I just don't notice the newly opened tin of coffee in front of me, and backhand it, spilling it on the floor, while reaching for the newly poured cup of coffee. This is my life. But it is who I am. Sometimes Annoying. But mostly laughable.

I thought I would share the most embarrassing examples of this from my life, in case it helps someone to feel a little better about himself: 1. When I first came to Germany to study, I only had enough money to survive for a few weeks. So I had to find a job immediately. But I didn't speak German..So I thought I could go to Turkish restaurants to ask if they had work for me. Then I went to this fancy restaurant and asked for the boss. He asked me what I could do. I said, anything. Doing the dishes, working at the bar, waiting tables etc. etc...So he asked me: - Do you speak German? - Oh, I started learning yesterday! - Do you have any experience working in a restaurant?? - No...but I am sure I can learn very fast. He was really kind. He said that he had enough people at the moment, but he would call me if he needed me. But then I had a question. I have absolutely no sense of orientation. So I was wondering how I was gonna go back to my place from there! It was supposed to be 20 minutes away. But it took me 40 minutes to get there! Anyway, he asked for a paper from the waiter and started drawing a very detailed map. Unfortunately I have this problem of not being able to sit still. I always swing back and forth on a chair...So I was doing that, while looking at him drawing the map, while imagining that it would be nice if he drew some trees, and birds and the sun etc. I was basically dreaming and swinging.... And then I have heard the noise! The chair, MY chair, fell on the floor!..I could hold on to the table and find my balance, but it was so loud that everyone heard it! But I must say that the boss was such a gentleman. He stood up to put the chair straight. And went on to explain me the map. But imagine, what he must have thought of me?? I was trying to convince the guy for twenty minutes that I was able to do anything ( !!) , just to prove in the end that I was NOT even able to sit on a chair properly! Of course he never called! But I kept that map for quite a while and put the trees and birds on it myself:-) 2. I studied classical guitar at the conservatory here.Unfortunately it is not an orchestra instrument. But I loved to go to the rehearsals of the orchestra. You learn a lot, just by watching the instructions of the conductor. So that evening a very famous French violin professor was gonna conduct the orchestra. I arrived late, so I had to wait outside, for the right moment to enter. Then I opened the door very silently, I stood by the wall, next to a few students. The music was so wonderful and relaxing, I felt like I could just let myself go.... so I leaned back just a little bit... And in that moment the room turned completely dark, the whole orchestra STOPPED playing!! Unfortunately I turned the lights of with my butt..Well, it really, really, was not my intention!! And then when I turned it on, the entire orchestra and the famous French violin professor, they all were looking and laughing at me!! 3. And then there is the story of the plane I missed, even though I went to the airport 8 hours before the flight... But that's really too embarrassing to tell...But I swear, it could happen to any of you!!! :-) So what is the solution??? I don't know. But I really love the following little poem and I think we must learn to look at our ENTIRE BEING, just the same way that the man in this poem looks at his left hand: "MY LEFT HAND I got drunk and again I thought of you My clumsy hand My pitiful hand. " Orhan Veli Kanik ( 1914- 1950, Istanbul ) (Thanks a lot for this very consoling lesson and for the wonderful animation! )

Believe it or not, Schopenhauer explained all about this supposed 'clumsiness', and what it really means. He wrote that people like that are 'aliens in society'...for very good reasons, and they aren't the reasons 'the multitude' thinks. He explained that to 'know the ways of the world', especially at an early age, or during one's teenager years, for example being a 'ladies' man', or being cunning with money, or being very “social” and fitting “well” into society, etc, in other words, being a so-called 'natural', 'it is not at all the sign of a great mind; it is a sign of VULGARITY, and that awkwardness in a person is a sign of an inner, nobler nature'. I found these revelations shockingly brilliant, for most people believe the opposite things, i.e. what a fantastic and interesting person you are if you are the ‘light of the party’ and a ‘people’s person’. He himself was clumsy, and so were many of the greatest minds and artists: Beethoven was the KING of clumsiness, there are many amusing stories about him; he would get to play the piano for friends and admirers, and when walking toward the piano, would crash into things, break things and make people laugh. Robert Schumann was very much similar. Glenn Gould too. Kant too, I think (I am still learning about him). People think that someone like that 'is an idiot'. They could never be more mistaken. It all makes perfect sense once you read in detail what Schopenhauer wrote about all this, which you will find in his Parerga.

I never thought i was clumsy till i did my chemistry lab which is in this semester, i broke a couple of tubes spilled countless solutions and bumped into my classmates more than i can count, and I’m also reckless so it’s even worse. I honestly don’t care about whether it’s embarrassing or not, but my major is chemical engineering, so this is more than just embarrassment for me.

Another strikingly relatable video!! I wonder at The School of Life's wisdom.Yes,we all are raging inwardly about our foibles and clumsiness and are always deeply embarrassed about them. This video can genuinely make us embrace ourselves for what we are because we are at the end of the day just common, clumsy human beings.

I live with my girlfriend and her parents, my clumsiness has upset them greatly over the past few months. As of today, I had bought wine for her mother's birthday, then me and my girlfriend thought it was funny to hit eachother with breadsticks leading to the unfortunate knocking over of the wine bottle, smashing the hob. I panic as her mother is to cook for the family for the birthday. Someone shoot me.

Everyone is clumsy from time to time, because of lack of sleep or bad mood. But still, we shouldn't accept it, that we are clumsier than the others. You can fight it very easily, the answer is: awareness. Try to improve your mindfulness, think what you do, train your focusing skills. Be there, where and when you are. It really helped me, as I was the clumsiest family member. What really helped me was also changing the status of my life, for example I move out and started to live on my own, got married and so on. You won't be clumsy that much when you have to take more responsibility for you and the others. My wife was also just like me, now it looks really much better. Some clumsiness will be there forever, but it will me so little you will be able to laugh about it and just don't care. Just think how many bad feeling you can spare yourself. How much money do you lose, because you have to buy all this things you have destroyed. Instead of making good holiday, you have to buy new phone, glasses, carpets etc. It's just a huge waste of money, what makes you even more miserable.

I trip multiple times a day, have butterfingers, I break almost everything I own and if I don't I lose it. I forget things so easily too. I don't think this is normal anymore because not only has everyone pointed it out already and have said that I was a klutz and my mom even said I was doing it on purpose. Some say I'm doing it for attention too, but I get frustrated that I'm like this too and I don't want anyone noticing my failures anymore. I do laugh it off and just say yes it's me I'm a klutz and make some jokes about it but sometimes it can get frustrating too.

I dont trip, I dont fall. I keep dropping and breaking things without me knowing what I did to break it. Like I held a big bottle to pour some ice lemon tea in my cup. Then I somehow drop it, and it got all over the floor. I somehow managed to break like 14 headphones and 6 earpieces. I also broke a speaker's charger spot for some reason. Like, wtf is wrong with my hands-

This made me feel a lot better. I am such a klutz and the worst is when I accidental break or damage important belongings of mine or others. It's the worst feeling when it's someone else's property and you know it was an accident and you tried to be careful, it feels like you have no control and there's this Tasmanian devil running loose breaking things and you have to take all the blame for it. 😩 I keep dropping my phone lately and I think it really messed it up this last time, which is so upsetting. But after watching this now I do feel better thinking about how so many others are clumsy too.

I have never really felt bad about my clumsiness even though many have pointed out I should be more careful (some have even accused me of breaking things on purpose). Tablets and phones with shattered screens, backpack filled with vinegar, sunglasses in the toilet etc. have made me a more patient and acceptant person. I can't be bothered to get angry about such things anymore and I think people feel comfortable around me because of how ok I am with being clumsy.

I don't know why I'm so clumsy. Wherever I go I loose things, break whatever I touch, tear off my clothes without even acknowledging, I don't take care of anything, I let my stuffs get ruined, I myself am a bit dirty and messy looking, and that gives people the authority to openly humiliate me and fool me. How do I change it? myself for the better? I don't know where to start so I searched this up on youtube "how to not be clumsy" and came across this

I don't know how likely it is that I will be heard, asking here, but could you please create a video on resentment? Is resentment a byproduct of immaturity, as we are basically holding others responsible for our emotions (victim complex?), even if their actions towards us may be at the root ? Is the right response then to make ourselves entirely responsible for how we feel about others' actions towards us, without letting them face any kind of repercussions regardless of how inconsiderate or toxic they may be? Is resentment strictly a counterproductive response that should be curbed? Or is it a perfectly healthy, normal response that brings our attention to flaws in interpersonal dynamics, and which provides opportunities for development (Individual/mutual)?
