The advice that Becky gave Rachel about there never being a good time made me emotional 😢. My mom, who recently passed away, said this to me about 10 years ago, when I was chatting with her about important life decisions. It really stuck with me, and has made me a little braver in accepting change and new challenges!

Best piece of advice that really stuck with me: "Don't try to make lemonade out of a dry lemon" it's quirky but I've spent SO MUCH of my life putting sooo much energy into something that just couldn't give any back to me. Investing in bad friendships and relationships, etc. Kinda like "Don't be mad at the sun for shinning" don't put energy in being upset about things that just are

The thing that stuck with me was "When nobody sees you, make others feel seen". I had just moved to a new town, I felt alone and friendless and this helped me in so many ways. It made me show gratitude to others like the mailmen or the cashier at the local coffee shop or just at parties I attended, I complimented people more and showed more interest in them first, lowering my guard in the process and then receiving so much positivity back. It was insane.

Becky, I hear you with SAD. I feel like my mom was always ahead of the curve with that one but she just didn’t know it. Her phrase is “get some sunshine on your eyeballs”. Doesn’t mean you have to go for a 5 mile hike, but just being outside and letting the light hit your face and taking a pause. Moms just know sometimes.

I paused the video early on, Becky, to chat about battling S.A.D. I live near Seattle, so this used to be a massive struggle for me, where I would have a hard time getting out of bed from Fall through mid May. I'd love to share some tips! Instead of sitting in front of my happy lamp, I put it in my living room window (with my sheer curtains in front of it) which helps to make it feel the same way as it would feel if the sun were shining through the window. Then I can clean, read emails, etc while also benefiting from it. The most impactful change I've done though is to take a vitamin D supplement right when I wake up, which helps to give me energy simply just get out of bed. This one tip has been life changing for me, honestly. Most Seattleites are Vitamin D deficient, and I believe the same is true for people in your area since the climate is similar. I hope some of these tips benefit you!! Ps. I love "From the workshop floor", especially the ones where I get to know you all better and/or learn something! Thank you for everything you've taught me along the way!! xoxo Erin

My first piece of advice that I remember I actually took to heart and wrote down was about grief, that it's an ocean, and fresh grief is the middle of the ocean in a big storm and the waves are constant and seem unending, but over time the storm will calm. The waves will never stop coming, it's the ocean after all, but they won't be so high or scary or pull you under anymore. It helped me a lot with dealing with grief. The waves are still here, but they're closer to ripples now, and I can swim, so whenever the next storm hits I'm not as helpless as I was before.

In reference to whay Rach was saying here 27:03 , I have felt that everything happens for a reason since I was really young. Maybe days-years after a certain thing happens, I can link it to something else that will come up that made me think "wow. If xyz thing hadn't happened, this current thing would have never been an option." My husband has always had issues with depression/anxiety when bad things happen. He can tend to go very dark pretty quickly, but thanks to the way I can see links between things that happen, I tend to point out the links or "silver linings" and slowly he has started to pick up on things like that with me. It has helped him a LOT (at first though, he would find it very irritating). He doesn't tend to go down as hard or turn so dark when things happen anymore. These days he will be like "this thing/event really sucks now, but I know it will likely open a door for something later". It's been such a great way to deal with life when he puts it together that way. I'm glad that's the habit of mine that he took up instead of my craft supply hoarding 😅

It is such a treat getting to hear everyone's thoughts and stories in such a laid back environment. Similar to what Becky was talking about with thoughts and if they serve you, if you have anxious thoughts I heard to ask yourself if it is the real you talking. It helps with self doubt or worry about the what if's. And I deff had my first kiss in kindergarten too! lol. He ended up being a childhood and lifelong friend, also gay 🤷‍♀

Best advice my Dad gave me in Jr high I was being bullied by the “popular girls” . I was crying and telling my Dad I didn’t want to go back to school anymore and he said “They are NO different than you, they put their pants on the same way you do, 1 leg at a time”! Since then I was never intimidated by other people. Even movie stars which I met several and I was in the movie Love & Death with Elizabeth Olsen which side note she is SOOOO nice! Thanked us everyday & said there would be no show if there wasn’t extras and she was grateful for us! I have it on video when she was telling us this😊❤ Anyway so if you know a kiddo being bullied maybe those words from my amazing Dad can help. (He passed away 3yrs ago and 3 weeks later my Mom passed 😢)

My first memory of a “concert” was my dad taking me to a music festival in my hometown and sitting on his shoulders to watch Little Richard sing and play Tootie Fruity in 1995. I’m sure I got dragged to that music festival before then though. My parents are early boomers and big oldies fans so by the time I’d graduated elementary school I’d seen Herman’s Hermits and Three Dog Night each twice. Sing along to Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog, Shambala, and Henry the 8th. My parents would just put my sister and me in a wagon and ply us with virgin strawberry daiquiris to let them go see bands they wanted to see.

I taught myself to quilt. And frequently screwed up. Meaning, lots of seam ripping and recutting material and beating myself up. One day, I read a quilters book, and I got the best piece of advice. No one is going to notice your "mistakes" like you do, and "the Quilt Police" are not coming to arrest you for them! So, chill out. Your "mistakes" are what give your project character. I remember this every time I do one. In fact, I am reminding myself of this today as I rip out and replace blocks that don't coordinate like I originally thought they would. And I not beating myself up for that. A baby quilt I gifted last month has many mismatched points. Don't know how I managed that, but I surely didn't point them out out to the recipient and belittle myself for it! It's still pretty!

Loves this episode! I would say the best advice I ever got was from my mom. She told me, “mommy’s baby, daddy’s maybe” and that set the course for the rest of my life. I was already not a fan of baby dolls or gender roles even as a kid, and I held closely what she said and saw in real life, in the lives of friends, neighbors and strangers, how true those words were. I never wanted to be them. I never wanted to be stuck in the crappy and horrible situations those women were, so I took control of my life and future and have never regretted my decision to not have children. I had my tubes removed a few years ago, it’s called a Salpingectomy and had my IUD replaced in surgery as well which was nice! I am gonna be 33 in April and I still don’t regret it and neither does my husband who I have been with happily for 13 years. He never wanted kids either and got a vasectomy like a responsible adult, he took control of his life, health and future.

I hollered when Rachael said her first concert was Hillary Duff because mine was too! One of the overhead speakers caught on fire midway through her set and she was wearing heels so the drummer ran around to the front of the stage and picked her up and ran off stage. It was the day before I started first grade and I was so excited to wear my concert shirt to the first day of school!
