I would add a crochet hook in to my essentials, I'm constantly using one to ladder down to fix mistakes! Double ended ones are preferable but any cheap hook would work, I prefer to use one a bit smaller than my needles too :)

Hi!! As a beginner knitter I really loved and appreciated this video 😊 I’m currently making your cozy mock neck sweater in the sunset colourway and I’m loving it! I’m also doing my PhD in a biological field and I wanted to mention something about collagen. Basically, collagen is a protein made up of 19 amino acids (think of them like building blocks). These 19 amino acids aren’t only found in collagen - they are found in lots of different foods. Basically, collagen is a specific combination of these amino acids. But the thing is, when you eat collagen, it doesn’t get transported to your joints or skin, it just gets digested by enzymes in your gut back into the amino acids (building blocks). Your body won’t know the difference between these coming from (often expensive) collagen or from other foods. The end result is the same - amino acids. The FDA also doesn’t regulate collagen supplements so you can never be sure if they’re effective or, more importantly, safe. All in all I think collagen supplements are a big scam designed to trick well intentioned people into thinking they do something special, which they don’t. Collagen supplements are just expensive protein powder being paraded as a superfood. That being said, if you notice them helping, maybe it’s because they have a specific amino acid that you might not be getting enough of in your diet. Anyyyways, sorry for the collagen rant, and thanks again for the lovely video!! Can’t wait for more 😊

Wrist pain is the absolute worst! I always recommend switching styles away from English/Continental knitting since they have way too much extra motion in the wrists. I’m a big fan of Portuguese knitting as an alternative. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but ultimately it was the best thing I could have done for my joint health; the amount of motion in the wrists is drastically cut down, so I’m able to knit for those wonderfully long stretches of time without any excess strain.

I always keep a small crochet hook in my bag for knit related emergencies and a small pair of scissor. I always tell people who have never knit to get needles from the 2nd hand store to start and use a yarn that is not to expensive. If after a few projects you love it then start to invest in your tools. Txs for a great video. Oh and for at least the first 10 years I knit I tied a piece of different colour yarn on my needle as the stitch markers. It works great.

Also I think if you are a knitter that likes to travel, rubber stoppers are a must! I cannot tell you how much of a necessity they are in my day-to-day knitting. Especially if you are a beginner and don’t know how to fix drop stitches and want to prevent your work messing up when traveling.

If you use circular needles you can pull them up so the work in progress sits on the inbetween cable. Never lost a stitch that way.

I would recommend blocking mats if you want to work with lace. Also, I have a dry flat hanging 'rack' for sweaters which is made from mesh and collapses that I absolutely love to use. It's great if you don't have space to lay multiple sweater out to dry on towels

I did just start using a compression glove last week, it's made such a difference! One thing I had to have early and i thank myself for it every single day is a small battery operated LED magnifier. I got the cheapest one it was like 10 bucks at Joann and I literally can't get thru a day without using it to count stitches or see what i did this time or find a dropped stitch in a sock.. it's been invaluable to me and my bad eyesight

I'm a crocheter but recently started knitting. I have pregnancy and postpartum carpal tunnel, which as you know is a bummer for us. I bought a wrist brace and wear it while I knit and crochet. At first it was super uncomfortable and awkward but I've gotten used to it now and I can really see how much we move our wrist now. I also go to the chiropractor and she adjust my wrist once a week. Hopefully it will go away soon. I will def invest in the some compression gloves once I don't need the brace any longer.

I agree on the interchangeable needles. I bought so many knitting needles when I started, because I didn't know there were interchangeable ones. But I wouldn't start out with a kit. You can also buy one cord and one pair of needles in the size you need for you project. This way you can try different materials. And personally I don't use a whole range of sizes. The ones I use the most are 3-5mm.
@catie1899

Absolute yes to that! I think that especially for new knitters it's important to find needles that they like and that fit their knitting style and hands. And there are so many materials they can be made out of/ different brands have different feels. Finding out if you like wood, bamboo, metal, nickle coated, plastic etc. and then how slick those are and which one you can work best with can take a few tries.

Enjoying your podcasts greatly. I have begun in the past year or so using Portuguese method of knitting--no wrist pain. Basically all you do is flip your left thumb! Not quite that simple, but a great improvement, and I'm much faster. Merry Christmas, all!

for interchangeables: you can also buy individual sizes that work with the systems- which helps if you want to vary your needle materials or need an odd size! for some smaller sizes i prefer metal to wood and it was nice to get some really chonky 15mms that would still work with the cables i already have. Knitter’s Pride and LYKKE work on each other’s cord, with the former offering metal and wood options. before i get my big kit (on my wishlist) i can just get needles for the next project that will all go together in the end

I think I may try compression gloves! My essential item is a headlamp. It's so nice to have a super direct light when it's night time or during winter when we don't have as much daylight hours. Question: whaf sweater/yarn were you wearing when you showed yourself using the electric razor? I adore that color and the pattern!

Have to say that a good pair of scissors is essential too! My favourite thing which is a little all in one kit is my Knit Kit - all in one device with a stitch counter, tape measure, small yarn cutter, fold up scissors, darning needle, needle gauge, crochet hook and stitch markers…yes all those things are in the one kit! It was a gift but if i had seen this regardless i would have bought it. It’s a lifesaver! Also second the interchangeable needle set tip. I started off using straight needles and have found interchangeables so much more versatile and easier to jump from project to project. Ever since I’ve gotten my set, I haven’t even touched my straight needles and they are all just sitting in a jar gathering dust now…though does make a pretty display :)

Interchangeable needles are a big plus *but* they can get very expensive, very fast. KnitPro (KnitPride depending on whether you're in North America or not) do smaller, tester subsets with 3 sizes which could be worth looking at in a first time -- it's what I went with. A note on second hand needles: also a good option but older ones are very heavy -- they could dissuade a new knitter!
@aliceivy4594
@aliceivy4594 3 жыл бұрын
Also, re:knitter's bag, almost everyone has spare tote bags lying around. Those are a good option, with an old pencil case (or even a ziploc bag) to keep the small pieces separate. Bulb safety pins make for good stitch markers -- and are quite cheap when not sold as knitting notions!

Great video 😊❤️ Excellent list of some of the starting essentials for beginners. The tools that I would add to the list is very sharp scissors. I personally use embroidery scissors as I think it’s important to be able to cut yarn easily and cleanly. I always have a little notepad and pen/pencil when I knit so I can count rows, jot down notes about modifications, etc. If I’m using a pattern I print it for this reason and annotate and scribble notes, make modifications, highlight and mark progress. When I finish I put the pattern in a folder to reference later, or so I have all those there if I use the pattern again.

@@WellLovedKnits I have them too and love them. Bought a few sizes of the interchangeables, since a set is too pricy for me but the investment for a pair is okay :) The needles are very slick and nicely pointy, so you work fast with them if you like metal needles.. and the cables don't turn and twist on themselves because the cords don't hold a memory. They are a bit of a puzzle though - they have 3 different cord sizes that need to fit with the needle size you use, so if you or anyone else wants to get them, be careful when selecting the pieces! There are adapters that make you able to go down a cable size as well, I use the thinnest one for sock knitting even though I use 2.75 mm needles (the smallest size for the middle cable) And finally.. smooth connections, no sharp edges anywhere and the cable connectors are teeny tiny, so they don't annoy you when working either. I am definitely going to keep on sneaking up on a collection of them whenever I can afford/ need a different needle size. :>

I got a little set of those mini repair needles with a knitting needle at one end and a crochet hook at the other end. I think one is 3.5 mm and the other one, 5 mm. I have used them time and time again the fixed dropped stitches, turn stitches around and sometimes, even to thread some ends.

Oh, I have so much to add)) When I started to have a mess in needles, I thought about buying interchangeables, but the ones I needed (sizes 2 to 6) were in different kits and cost a ton. So I bought a kit of 12 circular needles on Amazon and boy they are great! And they cost me like 20 euros. I don't knit chunk, so it's a way to go for me. Another essential of mine is hand cream. Wool absorbs moisture like crazy, so you need to treat your hands in this way as well. And I absolutely agree about electric razor! Moreover, picking peels by hand will actually promote more peeling, so they have to be cut in proper way. I also use a square frame for swatch counting and a row counter. Those are like few cents price but make your life so much easier. And crochet for weaving and fixing mistakes.

This is a wonderful video with lots of helpful info! I’m a fairly stingy person when it comes to knitting; I don’t buy stitch markers, I use safety pins or paper clips because I already have them (or hair ties for thicker needles). I also don’t buy any tapestry needles, as you said in the video, I use crochet hooks. This has its ups and downs. I don’t know if this will be good advice, just thought I’d share.

It's so interesting what individuals see as essential. In my world the project bag is not on the list because I am a monogamist knitter, so when at home my project sits beside me in my space and if I travel with it, it goes in a canvas bag with straps just the right length to go over my shoulder so not compete with other things. That bag is it. And blocking mats a true essential because I consider blocking as part of the finishing process for almost everything. I have little space for drying so they are so useful, I have very non expensive ones. Everything else a big yes for beginners. Body care can be done in many ways.

Could you show any wrist exercises you might be doing to help the wrists? I would be interested to see them. Also those compression gloves, do they fit 'snug' aka a bit tight on the fingers or is there a bit of room to spare? Another reason I can think of to get the circular needle interchangeable set is the cost of buying individual sets CRAZY when you are new to knitting. I am just starting to get back and enjoy knitting and knitting on circular needles - something I never thought I would EVER do - and what I have spent on needles so far would have gone a good way to the purchase of an interchangeable set.

I've learned that stretching my shoulders and upper back help A LOT in wrist pain because your wrist muscles are connected to muscles back there. I don't really like exercising that much, but I do care about taking care of my body (partially for knitting purposes). So I exercise just enough in the mornings to warm up my body enough to stretch the muscles I feel need it (and my upper back ALWAYS needs it). When I'm on top of that, knitting is so much more enjoyable. Also, you kind of forgot scissors...

Aghh... I'm trying to decide on whether I get this Lykker set or one of the Ginger Knitters Pride sets. If I went with Ginger, Do I go the longer or shorter option? I love the colours of the shorter much better and wouldn't hesitate if the longer ones were in that colourway.... I know... knit picky! But if I went with the shorter in the colourway that I adore, I could knit hats, scarves, sleeves as well ass bigger projects, yes? BUT I have Arthritis hence my hesitation with the shorter option. I am a beginner knitter and haven't used circular needles let alone the shorter needle option. The other set I am considering is the Knitters Pride wooden Cubics re the arthritis issue. I'm going with wood rather than metal for this reason. There are so many glorious choices, I can't settle on one. Heeelllllp!

If you have a local yarn store near you, you could ask if they'd be so nice to let you try them! Most needle packaging should be just the plastic zip bags or boxes if it's addi for example.. Those also have cubic needles - and you could just take a bit of yarn with you and ask so you can get a feel for what it will be like? I am from germany, but I think it might be similar at your place as well, they generally help out a lot and know about what might be available for you. I can also order what they don't have in stock normally.. My store here doesn't carry the brand of needles I use, but their supplier will just send them whatever item I need and it's not any more expensive, even if it's just a pair of cable connectors.

Do you have to "block" a garment after knitting? Or can you just wear until it needs washing?
@catie1899
@catie1899 3 жыл бұрын
It changes the way the fabric is and fits, especially for anything fitted or knitted after a pattern. And if can even out stitches as well. I mostly make accessories or socks and haven't found the courage for a sweater yet so I never needed to! Generally, anything that has a gauge attached to it will probably ask you to make a gauge swatch and then block it so you know if you'll end up with the right size.

Has anyone used the detergent with lanolin for woolen knits? Is it better than the usual wool detergents?

Collagen is a type of protein that prevents your skin from sagging. Collagen will make your skin snap back to its place after you stretch it. However taken orally your body will see it just as another protein source and it’s going tı break it down to create its own collagen, muscle etc. That’s why it doesn’t matter if you use collagen supplements. You just need to make sure that you get enough protein and also that you get all the essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and it has different types. Their arrangement is what makes different types of protein sources. All of the protein that you take orally will be digested into these amino acids to create tissues that are essential to your body and that’s why taking a collagen supplement is no different than any other protein supplement in terms of benefits.

I started by buying a knit kit from a website and made a simple hat!

When I started I made the chunky hat from sheep and stitch. It was made with chunky yarn so it knit up quickly and it had simple things like knit and purl and decreases.
