But why, though? Is it to distract from oil spills, smog, the well-oiled network of petrol stations, leaky pipelines poisoning ground water, fracking, and from renewable energy being much cheaper even without the subsidies that oil, gas, coal, and uranium receive? Is it to make it seem like the climate catastrophe is a matter of small personal choices rather than a global structural political issue that 99% of the population wouldn't have an impact on even collectively without first changing the underlying infrastructure of everyday life? Or is it an attempt by the paper industry to open new revenue streams now that they have increasing competition from.the hemp industry?

"the corporations" didn't do it. You think they just decided to stop using plastic straws? They banned them in several states, the companies had to come up with an alternative if they wanted to keep selling drinks with straws like they always had. In sure a few decided they might as well make it company wide because it's easier than trying to sort out different supplies for different states, and you might as well play it for a PR gain if you are going to be stuck with a crappy situation anyway. So blank eco activists and the state governments, not the corporations.

As for the evidence you're asking, just read the IPCC report. You'll see how much emissions are produced. Then compare that to amount of carbon sequestered by a tree over it's lifespan. What people miss about plastics and other petroleum based products is that they are already being recycled. When oil is pumped out of the ground they extract the gasoline. That is the main revenue stream. That is the driving force behind pumping more oil. Everything else is made from the waste of that process. Asphalt, plastic, Styrofoam, rubber cement, motor oil. What ever form it takes is that this is the alternative to just dumping crude oil back into the environment. If you really want to attack climate change it's using less gasoline. Get a smaller more fuel efficient car, drive less, and drive slower.

I love how the solution to all these plastic problems is basically lets find the lowest possible weight of plastic and get rid of that like plastics bags and straws. I see a lot more of the non-micro plastic/biodegradable plastics around lately. Suffolk County NY went full paper straws several years ago but some plastics apparently qualify. I went to a 7-11 last week and they gave me a fabric bag (really cheap feeling) instead of plastic or paper. Paper is AWFUL for bags in most cases since they rip apart so easily. I was working food service when they made the switch to paper straws.... I have never seen angrier customers except maybe that one lady who got really mad that we ran out of gravy on thanksgiving after almost a full day of non-stop line-ups. They would bring them back (used so they were garbage anyway), throw them at us in anger and just walk away, or ask if we had plastic ones in the back (which we didn't obv. but I think that is the bargaining part of the 5 stages of depression so it was annoying but better than the angry stage). Good times

also our pickles are grown in Argentina, processed in Thailand, and consumed in the US, because it's cheaper to have a fleet of ships running circles around the planet than to produce food locally.

I literally had paper straws at my brother’s wedding, and this is FACTS. You forgot to mention the satisfying way in which the the dye in the decorative coloring in the straw dissolves off the straw into your drink, so you have not only a taste of toilet paper in your drink, but also the taste of what is basically lead paint when you eat the straw
