At this point the Kingdom of Jerusalem was in a desperate state having lost many of its knights and without clear succession and against an organized enemy that was intent on capturing Jerusalem. We can see that during the proper third crusade Reynald wasn't completely incompetent, he just wasn't Baldwin levels of being able to keep the state together.

@@giantotter319 Richard was wrongfully prisoned. He was accused as a conspirator in the assassination of Conrad of Montferrat because he supported Guy de Lusignan. Richard made some fellow Crusaders enemies during the Crusade such as Leopold V, and Philip II Augustus. Richard wanted to return to England by sea, but access was blocked by his enemies. He was imprisoned by Leopold V because Leopold was still butthurt about his standard being torn down by Richard's order after the Crusaders' captured Acre. Philip II on the other hand was more than happy to have Richard away from England and France (at that time England controlled more than half of France than the French Crown) because Philip know how good of a general Richard was for him to handle if he was ever going to take back France for his crown. As for the criticism of bankrupting England, I agree with taxing people to fund his battles, but when it comes to the ransom, the Germans were asking a ridiculous amount. His mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine used much of her own wealth to pay the ransom - albeit people were still taxed into oblivion. Even the Pope declared Richard's imprisonment illegal and excommunicated the parties involved.

Everyone talks about Montisgard but another example of how cool the Leper King was came six years later at the Siege of Kerak. Kerak was a fort and was seen as the bulwark against the Ayyubids pushing further into the Kingdom. Baldwin by this point was blind and couldn't walk, but he still personally went out with the army sent to relieve the siege, being carried on a stretcher. When the Saracens heard that Baldwin was coming, they gtfo.

Their conquests even marked the end of the Abbasid Caliphate, the successors of the Prophet's uncle. While Saladin and the Ayyubid Kurds left their mark, especially with Hattin, Baybars' achievements were transformative. Despite starting as a 12 or 14-year-old slave without any ruling experience, he rose to defeat superior foes, the mongols. He achieved more at the end.
