Felipe Rico what about those of us who never grew up with the original like for example I was able to take off the Nostalgia glasses and actually enjoy Charlie in the Chocolate Factory the 2005 version and you want to know what I did after I watched it I rented the book from the library and read it and actually compared it minute by minute to the movie and found that the Remake was 90% accurate to the book while the original made Willy Wonka the star when Charlie was supposed to be on the title.

Sometimes it’s not a remake, two perfect examples of this are the 2017 version of It, and Charlie and the chocolate factory. Neither of these movies are remakes, they are different adaptations that people unfairly compare to the “original,” and what people call the original is unoriginal, the original of both of these is actually a book.

Thank you! While I like Doug one of the things that upsets me is his unfair comparison of Willy Wonka and Charlie by making an old vs new of them and even with this still having Burton’s film in the thumbnail.

Every time you see the question about what should be remade on askreddit, people always name perfectly great movies, and they get the most votes. That blows my mind. I agree with Doug, I wanna see remakes of bad movies with an intriguing premise that just didn't work out.

I think that’s probably because to most people it goes like, “Oh, I real liked that film, so it would be awesome to get an updated version.” To The average person, I suspect the idea of a remake of a bad movie doesn’t sound that appealing because it was a bad movie. Either there’s an association there or they haven’t done the critical thinking on the reasons for a remake like Doug has, and think that the reason to do a remake is to bring something old to a new era and generation the way it was done before. So they imagine that a remake of a bad movie will also be bad. I know I wasn’t thinking critically about what should be remade until I watched this video.

@@samuelchurch5124 Remaking The Mask will not work. Just like "...The Chocolate Factory" films how Wilder will be remembered more over Depp with the casting of Willy Wonka, whoever they pick for Stanley (or the bearer of the mask) will be overshadowed by Jim Carrey's performance.

My answer as to when remakes SHOULDN'T happen: When Either A: the original is timeless so there's no point. (Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones) B: When it's made to cash in on nostalgia, not out of passion. (Mummy Remake 2017) C: When you have nothing to add to the original to improve it.

lol . . . nice one!! Except, funny thing, that should be a movie that could be considered for a remake, though an actual sequel using the screenplays Baum wrote would be the best route. Apparently Baum's dream was to have his novels made into movies, and he did direct some, back in the early days of movies. So, instead of trying to explain the Wizard, perhaps we can contine forward in Oz, and maybe get Locasta this time?

I do as well. I feel as if Depp's and wilder's portrayals were representations of two sides of the book willy wonka. Depp represents the mentally injured version and a showing for all his crazy ideas. And shows his internal child. Wilder's shows the charismatic charming sociopath of a chocolate maker that willy wonka could be. At the end I don't see the 2005 film as a remake of the 1971 version. I see both as an interpretation of the book they are both based on

Brendan Fraser Mummy was totally great for what it was. I kind of dislike how people have to tip toe around liking it. It’s fine to say it was a really good film. What I love about it, is it feels like the classic ‘serial adventures” that inspired Indiana Jones. It felt like a “modern” version of those classic serial adventures. The script in particular, has all the tropes that you would find in classics like Star Wars. And that is why it works so well. The new film completely misses all that, and tries to be a generic action blockbuster. Not even Tom Cruise could save it.

Plus, compared to the godawful reboot with Tom Cruise, the Brendan Fraiser version did have one thing from the original movie that the reboot doesn't, horror. Even though its more action focused and campy, it still has some creepy and disturbing moments that seems to be in the spirit of the original. Without it, the reboot is just another generic Tom Cruise action flick.

I think remaking bad movies or at least not very good movies is a brilliant idea, some adaptations deserve a much better chance than what they got like percy jackson, some scripts have great ideas but horrible actors make them bad. however i do think some classics can be remade if it offers a new perspective doesnt even have to be that different in story just a new perspective on the events of the film
@icecreamhero2375
@icecreamhero2375 7 жыл бұрын
percy jackson should have been animated if it was animated they could do all the stunts and not worry about the actors saftey the characters travel around the world so it would save money also they can make the details exactly like the book like the green eyes etc they can also keep the characters their proper age and have celebrities voice them, the special effects in the movie looked pretty fake and terrible if it was comletely animated then the supernatural stuff won't clash with the environment, people may say that would make it look babyish but the back of the book says ages 7 to 14 iand it is marketed to elementry schoolers and animation is just a medium they could give it an anime esque look if they want it to appeal to teens alot of teens are interested in anime

I always preferred the two Tim Burton Batman movies over the next two that followed after them. Everything about the way it was all designed and fit together just felt right in Burton's films, and in the next two movies the design of everything just sort of felt off to me. Burton's films have his style that mixes gloom and whimsy, of course, but at the same time it also felt like Keaton's Batman was fighting in a fairly realistic and believable city. Then you look at Clooney's Batman and Kilmer's Batman and you've got him fighting in a city that looks more like an exhibit full of gargantuan Greek god statues in a cage of neon lights and bathed in unicorn vomit. But hey, in a way it's kind of a strength of the Batman franchise that it can be so flexible in the hands of different creative teams. From the campiest and cheesiest of times (West) to the grittiest and most serious of times (Bale) and everything in between, plus of course the original comics and the animated incarnations of the franchise as well. It's not always going to hit the exact same notes. And that's fine.

When you touched on the remake of Psycho, I wish you brought up the TV show the Bates Motel. One thing I loved about that show was they managed to explain things in a way that you didn't mind it. And when it came to the infamous shower scene, they found a way to shoot it shot for shot and still somehow remain to pull a twist that shocked a lot of people.

I wish I could give this more than one thumbs up. As a HUGE Hitchcock fan, who think they did a great job on Bates Motel in general (once you get over the weird backwards anachronisms, like having cell phones and modern technology, and the show not taking place in Arizona), I was really skeptical as to how well they'd handle the infamous shower scene. I went from surprised, to confused, to shocked, to absolutely impressed. It really reflected everything that motivated the characters involved throughout the series up to that point, instead of derailing buildup of character development entirely to adhere to some sort of fan-service. It felt like something Hitchcock might have done, with his sense of humor, if he was coerced into making a character study TV show involving these characters he'd already explored in his movie. I loved it!
@tauniasabanski85
@tauniasabanski85 6 жыл бұрын
This really depends on what context you're talking about. The creators of Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris and Robert Bloch, respectively), who wrote numerous books about their characters, have already spent a lot of time over-explaining and over-fleshing-out their creations. Once these characters enter the public sphere and people are working with the original IP to create their own media surrounding these ideas (and once an IP enters the public sphere, this is not something you can prevent), it's their responsibility to handle the IP in a respective manner. If the IP has been treated well, I find you can get a lot of enjoyment out of a property "done differently" or "explored differently" by a group of creatives if you treat the end product like a separate entity. For me, the Bates Motel TV series is a separate entity to the original movie(s) and even the original book(s). There are different things I like about all of them, and I think the original IP was treated respectfully in this instance -- Bates Motel is just a different way of exploring the characterization of Norman Bates and the social dynamic of Norman Bates interacting with certain character archetypes, especially with what we know now about mental illness, engulfing narcissism and personality disorders. In actual instances where the IP is definitely being used disrespectfully or to carry on a creator's agenda (and this certainly happens a lot-a lot), it can be very damaging to an IP, and subsequently the fans of that IP. I absolutely agree with you on that front; however, Bates Motel is not one of those instances. It might be different -- but it's just another way of exploring the idea of the character as we move forward in time, medical advancement and technology.

I think Doug may have misrepresented two movies as remakes: Tim Burton's _Charlie and the Chocolate Factory_ and _Alice in Wonderland_. It's true that movies of those existed before Burton made them, but remember: They were books first. With _Charlie_, his goal was not to recreate the 1971 film, but to re-adapt the Roald Dahl book. He didn't make Wonka sly and cunning, he didn't add whimsical song numbers (the Oompa Loompa songs in his version were straight out of the book), and he didn't add any Fizzy Lifting Drinks. Had he included all the things the 1971 version had invented, it would be fair to call his movie a remake. With _Alice_, Burton's version has an original plot and is almost nothing like the 1951 movie. Why are people even calling it a remake? Is it because it has the name _Alice in Wonderland_ and features characters from the original book? That's nowhere near enough to constitute calling it a remake of a specific movie. The animated Titanic movies straight-up steal shots and ideas from James Cameron's _Titanic_, yet no one calls them remakes. You may love or hate the Burton films I've described here, but whatever your stance is on them, I feel it's wrong to say a second adaptation of a novel is a remake of particular movie.

To be honest, I don't think Doug is even the right person to judge which Wonka movie is better when he demonstrated in his Old vs New of the two that he seems to think the original movie is what's accurate to the book. Much like how he thinks Henry Selick and Randy Newman invented everything that confused him or pissed him off about James and the Giant Peach.

I'm wondering why they haven't remade Jason And The Argonauts yet? it's been long enough now that a remake would be acceptable and think about how epic it could be with today's technology! If they got the right people behind it with the right director, it could be really good film, as long as they don't fuck it up entirely like Clash Of The Titans.

+Patrick O'Ryan I genuinely want them to leave Jason and the Argonauts alone. The effects still hold strong today; funnily enough, I watched a few clips last week, and I was blown away by how amazing they managed to conduct the stop-motion scenes, and how well the tension was paced. I fear that if it was remade today, it'd be CGI'd to hell and back, and it would likely be quicker paced and over-exaggerated to suit the general modern audiences.

I'd prefer if it was left alone, mostly because of one of the points brought up by the Critic. It probably wouldn't have the heart of the original. So many of the remakes are pretty soulless CGI extravaganzas. And I'm fine with them updating the technology (I love stop motion as well). It's cool to think how far we've come in terms of effects and what we can do now as compared to before. But the problem is that most of the filmmakers and/or studios are only focusing on what they can update and ignoring the heart that went into the originals and made them great. If I trusted a remake to strike a balance between the two, I'd be all for it.

Max Madmax I highly doubt that directors don't give a shit about the quality of their movies. Sometimes, it's shit because of the studio, sometimes it's shit because of the director, and sometimes its both. That doesn't mean a studio or director doesn't care about the quality of the product, it just means they weren't the right people to make it. I can guarantee you that most, if not all, directors pour all their heart and soul into every movie they make. It just so happens that they weren't particularly skilled enough or their style didn't mesh with the story. There's nothing wrong with directors experimenting with other kinds of projects, just don't always expect gold.

I completely agree with remaking bad films that had good ideas. One that I would love to see remade is Pixels. With a dark, sci-fi tone, and intelligently delving into what makes us human, and making the viewer question themselves with what they would do in such a situation, it could make a really interesting film. It sounds utterly ridiculous, but I think that by changing it up so much it could be something completely different, with the original fading into the background.

@@LordMoonshadowGaGa True, but on the other hand, if it's turned into a good story, it makes a very nice alternate take. I love the book, but I also think the movie is a solid film, one of my favorites. Just like The Shining. Stephen King is notorious for his hatred of Kubrick's film, but the film is undoubtedly one of the greatest pieces of cinematic history. If you look at it from the standpoint of the book, it is a terrible adaptation, but if you think of it as "Stanley Kubrick's The Shining," Then it gets a pass. Or the Disney movies being different from fairy tales. Sometimes it just works to take a story in a different direction visually. Not always, but there are times when it really works.

Ok but his issues with the 71 film were also things he'd dislike in the 2005 film as well. His biggest issues were that he felt the 71 film put too much emphasis on Wonka rather than Charlie, guess what the remake does even more than the 71 film? He also didn't like the casting of Gene Wilder because he wanted Willy to be British, Johnny Depp wasn't British either, so I'm sure he wouldn't like that. The 2005 remake may have been closer to the book but the issues he had with the original film would still be present, so he'd still most likely dislike the remake.

I don't know why people hate Burton's Alice in Wonderland so much. I thought it was interesting especially since it doesn't ruin the animated version. It's her second trip back to Wonderland. As a child she didn't really understand a lot of what was going on. It was just and escape for her and she eventually came to think of it as a dream. I even found the sequel to be better than the original. The whole time traveling aspect was really interesting. Plus I really love the music! It makes me so hype!

Spider-Man is an odd duck. It shouldn't be rebooted for this reason: it's the second reboot in less than 20 years. The new one is tainted by the failure of the first reboot. Yes, too soon to reboot. Hell, I'd have liked the first reboot to be a sequel to Raimi's trilogy rather than a new start.

I am all for a film maker taking a movie and making it in his or her own direction, however its all about the finished product, which we have seen go wrong MANY TIMES, as you pointed out. I honestly didn't know some of these bigger titles where remakes from classics I think it also depends on what film is getting a reboot, which that alone can be tough to even think of let alone make a movie out of it. If you do a shot for shot remake maybe try to add your own flavor or style to it...which can be super hard. This whole process is difficult lol. I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore. To address "Drop Dead Fred": I totally understand why some people hate the film, while I and many others love it. It's actually usually the same reason for both, Rik Mayall. The problem is that if you're not familiar/a fan of with Rik's specific brand of comedy and style, then you probably aren't going to enjoy the film. He's loud, obnoxious, insane, and in your face about it. But those of us who have seen "Bottom", "The Young Ones", "Man Down" etc., know what they're getting in "Drop Dead Fred" and even look forward to it. Hell, his autobiography is written in the exact same style. It's just one of his brands of comedy. To go off on my own tangent here (because I'm hopelessly obsessed with Rik, RIP), he did have a wide range and could play much more subtle and dramatic roles beautifully even in comedies. Site, "The Comic Strip Presents" and "Rik Mayall Presents" here.

I've already noticed that if Doug likes the first movie adaption of the book, he considers all later movies based on that book remakes of the first movie and judges them solely in comparison to that one movie. But that's just... wrong. I mean, The Phantom of the Opera, for example, has at least 8 movies PLUS the musical and the movie based on that. In fact, ALL classic novels have a ton of different adaptions. My point here is - why would you consider Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a remake of the 1971 movie? It's not a remake, it's just another adaption of the book that has nothing to do with the first one, and it annoys me to great end when people call the 1971 Charlie movie "the original". No, guys, it's not the original, the book is.

Neptuna I feel the same way with the "remakes" of Carrie. They're adaptations of Stephen King's novel, not meant to be remakes of the 1976 film. (Though the 2013 adaptation also took some inspiration from the first adaptation, such as casting Carrie to look more like Sissy Spacek, not how she actually looks in the book.)

odblog Not really... The only similarities between the 2005 version and the 1971 version is the source material, they don't even share the same name. Charlie and the chocolate factory is simply a different take on the book, and I think they are both great. I saw the 2005 version first, so it holds a special place in my heart, but, honestly, I like them both equally.

That's true. For example, new Beauty and the Beast movie is a remake of the 1991 cartoon because they literally copied most of it shot to shot, but if someone decided to make their own adaptation of the original Beauty and the Beast fairytale, it would be incorrect to consider it a remake of the Disney movie.

Neptuna There is a French Beauty and the Beast movie, La Belle et la Bête, from 1946, which was remade in 2014. I have seen both and the remake is extremely lovely! The original Disney Beauty and the Beast is my favorite but the French one from 2014 is gorgeous.

I'd rather have remakes right now, just look at the emoji movie, one of the only original movies coming out this year

The Emoji Movie is so cliche that it might as well count as a remake.

Don't be a sheep and watch movies that come out during the summer that don't aren't based on anything. Here's a few: It comes at Night The Beguiled Baby Driver The Bad Batch Split (technically, I know, but nobody knew going in) Get Out Valerian (based on a french comic, but NEW to most) The Big Sick Life A Ghost story Wind River Okja Win It All The Discovery All different genre's and types. NO EXCUSES! GO SEE AN ORIGINAL MOVIE!

I so agree about beauty and the beast. my family was happy with it, but they'd have been just as happy with an evening of Disney karaoke. I mostly sat there thinking "come on! the animated version got a standing ovation at Cannes! this is just the same but with Emma Watson's stiff face and somehow even stiffer animations." I was so irritated by how underwhelming the ballroom dance was (and not because of the dress, which was apparently the worst part for some people somehow).

Remakes were arguably MORE common in classic Hollywood era. As mentioned with Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, they were remade to go from silent & monochrome to talking and Technicolor. However, before television there was no way to see the original again for most. Even with television, there were decades of classic films only viewable in cut up form. Even with that, some films that didn't even do all that well when released became generational classics. Some even go periodic theatrical re-releases due to being so popular on television. Since VCR's became affordable, there really needs to be a reason for a remake to exist. The concept of Ghostbusters could really work if expanded on. A "next generation" type story might have been workable even with the same cast/concept as the remake. Rehashing what as already considered a classic which starred 3 great comic talents and a strong supporting cast is just asking for trouble. Why watch OK, when great is readily available. An average remake to a beloved film just looks bad in comparison because you are inviting that comparison. Better to make an average movie with a similar concept and remove the references and title.

For Freddy, I would honestly redesign him to be missing the flesh around the right side of his lower jaw and cheek (with bone exposed) and have charred, flaking skin with the traditional scarring every where else.

My wife and I discuss this all the time now. Hollywood is obsessed with re-boots, remakes, sequels, prequels,l etc. obviously it's safe money for them but we long for a decent original movie these days. They've lost all imagination and the top brass have cut the balls off anyone wanting to do something new.
