This is exactly what scares me most when we explore communicating with other spices! Can we live with ourselves after we have heard what they might tell us? My cat is a serial killer that have specialized on long torture sessions of his victims before he starts eating them. I wonder what he’s view of the value of my life is? Woke up once and found his paw poking my neck along my carotid arteries like he was a butcher planning the placement of his next cut :) Better keep the stream of cat food and treats going...

cat: "food" human: "later" cat: "mad" isn't technology amazing?
@0Jenna7
@0Jenna7 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, that's not technology. Well, the buttons are technology but it's something that's been around for a very long time. The cat learning that each button is associated with each thing. So it's a kind of science just not a technological one. This is an association, understanding thing. Of course, there is the fascinating question of does the cat really understands, or is she just associating the buttons? Then arises the question of is there a difference? And the answer to that is yes, and no. In that even human understanding starts with association which then develops into understanding. Ultimately I could say that this proves that a cat has the capacity for understanding/associations of that of a small child.

@@meganlodon Cats, unlike dogs, actually do have an internal clock, but they judge time ranges in general, so it's not as exact per se. Kinda like going without seeing the time all day and just having a feeling it's around this time, or knowing it's evening. Using human behavior around them helps, they like routine a lot on average. I know this because I had a cat that, everyday, at exactly 3pm, would start meowing her head off and going crazy for food. She had dry food, she wanted her dinner, aka wet food. Dinner for the kitties was always at 6. However, family would come home around 3, and as soon as said family got home from work, she'd start up, knowing it was somewhat around begging time, because if she was lucky, she'd get it a few minutes to a half hour earlier for being noisy and grabbing at my legs. (I fed them mostly.) Every day though, even if said family member didn't come home at that time, it'd be off by a few minutes of course, or a half hour or so, but she'd always end up starting up around them. She was like a personal alarm clock.
@meganlodon
@meganlodon 3 жыл бұрын
@@kiralonely1307 I actually knew about this, regarding cats' "internal clock", but dogs have it too. I both had several cats _and_ dogs that showed as such, especially this one dog (my grandma's) that knew exactly when the school bus came. So, instead of a parent being out there waiting on me, it was her. My grandma told me that she would always go to the end of the driveway at the same time every-day. Another cool thing: (since she was out there when I got on the bus) if I didn't go to school one morning, she knew not to wait for me in the afternoon. Man, do I miss her.

Welcome to BilliSpeaks! Billi has lots of buttons she uses to communicate (though her favorite button is "mad" lol). Her owner teaches her each word through modeling (pressing "want, outside" if Billi is meowing at the front door, for example) and Billi is very smart. There are other animals that use the same type of buttons Billi does. There's a black and white poodle looking dog named Bunny that I love as well. I highly recommend going through their channels and watching their "How do you teach x how to use the buttons?" types of Q&A's, it's fascinating.

Leeroy Jenkins press the mad button every time the cats mad or youre mad at the cat. It’s no different to them communicating it through body language really, like they pick up what communications relate to what emotions pretty quickly, it’s similar to my cat meowing a particular way when she’s pissed off and wants something. When the cat gets something it wants or is in a good mood or they’ve made you happy you press the happy button, like they might not understand the nuance of the emotions but they get that they’re communicating positive or negative feedback.

Years ago I was listening to the news from Chile while doing dishes and in the international part of the news they were talking how parents were giving torpedoes to their kids in hopes that they pass the high school exam or whatever is call in India as there are not many spots for higher education so only the very best get to go. I had to stop what I was doing and rewind that part to understand why torpedoes where used.... Then I understood they meant the parents where giving their kids a goat. @@Flanneryschickens kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3y6e31_h6eBm9k I just found that video to give you an idea of what I meant. I watched the news in 2009 when I had international channels and I wanted to see programs from other countries just because I could 😅 As i said before, it was in the international section that overall last 5 mins so they only mentioned this for 30 seconds. But it was the whole "climbing schools' walls to give their kids torpedoes" that perplexed me. And if I told you the news i would tell you the parents were climbing school's walls to give their kids 🐐 Anyways in my home country I was friends with a girl that had I high score on everything but I knew she wasn't going to get a higher education because she was poor. There are some regions that no matter how smart you are, you might never reach your potential because of poverty. People say "We have a rich country full with poor people because politicians keep the money to themselves instead of giving back to the country." Politicians kids get to go to better school and even to Europe because money can buy their kids better education.

These buttons make me giggle. I always used non verbal ques with my pets to see what they wanted or mimicked locals strays to comunicate. Like mother calls etc. Then again they would learn their name and when i was calling them etc. So i guess I always met the communication half way with my cats. Like a simple "show me" and they go to what they want. Up up to have my cat climb up or go to a spot. My last cat would climb trees with me snuggle like a beast and play pranks on me and my family. She knew "stay", "come", and she would do her little trills if she wanted to snuggle and if she was sleepy she would bring her fishy. So she could chew on it and go to sleep. Wash my cats with a moist cloth so they were bathed. Cats are trainable if you watch natural behavoirs and adjust your teaching to the cats natural reforcing and discouraging things.

Exactly :) This is just one way of plenty to learn (directly or indirectly) to communicate with your pet. Having them speak English words is just one of them (and arguably a bit more self centred lol) Edit: Yes I completely agree. Meeting them half way seems like the best way to me but that's subjective. I mean, when you teach it English words, and that's the focus, then suddenly that's how you communicate. I guess you still understand some cat language, but you'll get a stronger bond by learning some of ITS language, I think. Body language, meows, trills, all of that. Of course again, there's some things that are harder for the cat to express I guess, but then again again, it can easily show that by physical signs (walking towards door, meowing, then looking back at you - obviously it wants to go outside.)

Animals are pretty smart. Humans tend to associate intelligence with the ability to talk (read verbally communicate) so naturally the inherent belief of most people is that animals are dumb. However, animals simply lack the ability to formulate sounds like humans, but are actually quite intelligent. Cats and dogs typically reside around the 2 to 4 year old human intelligence. If you've ever done time with a 2 to 4 year old person, you'll realize that's actually terrifyingly intelligent. Remember this when you discipline your animals! They should not be hit any more than a 2 year old should be hit!

Dragonvarine that’s technically understanding. Associating correctly a word or phrase with an action or concrete object is sort of how language acquisition happens already. You can very easily teach a cat that the word “food” refers to what you put in their bowl. You can teach a cat that “water” is the liquid you put in their other bowl. You can teach them that “pets” is what happens when you’re touching them. You can do this over and over for all sorts of different things and eventually the animal may be able to press a button and tell you what they want. Other concepts like “later” are harder to teach, but still possible. Skinner did experiments with all kinds of animals about delayed gratification. The animals that waited received bigger rewards and eventually learned patience. I imagine you could teach the word “later” along with this concept by pairing delayed gratification with the stimulus of the sound “later”. Animals absolutely do learn and can understand, we just often have to train them to do specific tasks to show us that they do.

There's a few dogs like Bunny and cats like Billi that are using these buttons to communicate. Do they inherently understand the word? No. Babies don't understand words like exhausted or need or go, etc; but the language is taught. It's been told time and time again that some animals have intelligence equivocal to toddlers, and we teach them: "Eat" as we 'airplane' food into their mouth. or tell them to "Go run and play" as they zoom around the yard. It's clear to me that you can teach a dog to sit, and match the word to the action, and they associate what they do with the word. I can ask my dog to "Find rope" and "find ball" and because of my persistent training, he understands the difference between the two. He understands what "Find" means, and understands what each object is called. Now if we give him the option to ask back like "Where ball" (which sounds like toddler talk), then the connection can be: Where ball? Ball here. Have ball. As you show and give to him.
