The original hood pins, or slide pins, should ALWAYS be used on muscle cars. Back in the day, Cudas, Mustangs, and Camaros, just to name a few, featured these pins. Use whatever you want, but keep in mind the look and purpose of your ride.

Awesome, great to hear! Thanks for doing this research so I don't have to. I'll be getting some Quik Latch. Currently building an ARA rally car and hood pins and disabling the footwell release lever are a series regulation (presumably so if the car catches on fire, they can open the hood without needing entry into the car)

I installed slide pins in 05 on my 05. And would do it again. I like being able to SEE that the locks are actually in place. Thats just me, and both others seem to require a bit more fabrication.

That makes sense. 👍🏼 On both others, you can tell they are engaged by the position of the pin as well. The Aero’s will be down when they are engaged & the center of the QuikLatch will pop up & be flush with the other ring.

But when it came to safety the pin and being able to see that the hood is secure (reason to have these is safety not looks). I went with aero catch because I had to delete my factory latch (packaging, it’s a small engine bay), and it’s the positive lock, and QL themselves saying they recommend you retain the factory latch, that made me go aerocatch
@Nultic

I use Aerocatch with the locks (uses a key) on my Seibon Carbon Fiber CW-II. I don't know if the quick latches were available at the time or not (honestly didn't know about them until your bumper video), but wanted the locking ability since it was an expensive hood and to make sure the hood wouldn't fly up. The CW-II hood has a bigger hoodscoop than stock so I was worried it would have more drag and strain on the stock latch. I had a shop install the hood and latches, I don't think i'd ever install aerocatch on my own, especially not on CF. They do mention to grease the latches, but I think i've sprayed them with WD40 three times in the 5 years I've had the hood on the car. Car went through northeastern road salt too and they still hold up great!

I know this is an older video, but i needed to correct you on your researched information you imply. I have aero catch latches whilst still running the factory latch and i don't know if people install them wrong or not, but you can pull the bonnet/hood cable to pop it without having to unlatch the bonnet pins first. I just pop the hood go to the front and pop the pins and lift whilst releasing the factory secondary catch.

Isn’t the point of the hood latches existence to give the hood the ability to be opened without using the factory latch. I can see for a normal street car keeping the factory latch there, but I think track cars have the factory latch removed or disconnected.
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. At least that isn't the main reason. Their primary function is to prevent the hood from flying up. Carbon & fiberglass hoods have the hood latch molded in, but they can come loose over time & separate from the hood. In many race applications, the OEM hood latch is removed/not used, but the main reason for hood pins is to make sure the hood doesn't come loose at high speeds. 👍🏻
@Rubostli
@Rubostli 7 жыл бұрын
I can guarantee you that your hood on your close to stock sti will never get loose with the stock latch, and what the hell is the point of a QUIK latch if you have to open 2 more latches in adition to the stock one. in your case the quik latch is adding second to none funcsion. It woul be much better to get a locking latch and eliminate the stock one
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 жыл бұрын
Ruben Ostli I never said my stock hood would come loose. My STi is far from stock, but I assume you were talking about the stock hood. I decided to add latches to help reduce hood flex during high speeds & high winds. If you look at how they operate, they really aren't any harder to open than a factory hood which is why I specifically chose to go with Quik-Latches over slide pins or Aerocatch.

Hood Pins/Latches are designed from a racing safety perspective. Let’s say you are on a track in first place and your hood gets air lifted. You crash because you panic hitting the brakes and lose the race. Hood pins add extra support from your hood just lifting off. You could also not close your hood correctly and your hood could air lift. Just imagine you not closing your hood correctly after checking your oil, being on the highway and your hood pops up breaking your windshield. It happens, not often but it does.

I was looking at the Quik Latch. But I don't want to keep my factory latch. There's a reason race cars without latches typically use slide pins. I'm definitely not trusting a bit of plastic, so aerocatch is out. There is a company that sells recessed buckets for slide pins. That is a pretty cool look that also addresses the sleekness. Think that's the way I'm going.

Late to the party here. I always thought these latches REPLACED the OEM latch. So what's the point?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 4 ай бұрын
There are 2 main reasons. 1. In many racing applications, they are required for safety in the event that the OE latch should fail. 2. Most/all carbon fiber & fiberglass hoods have the latches molded into them which can fail over time and at high speeds, so it's for security there as well. Installing mine on my OE hood was not necessary, but I like the aesthetics and the added support they give. At high speeds my hood would flex a bit as it is aluminum.

I read a complaint from a user on a forum that that these hood pins can get rather difficult to unlatch after some time. Have you noticed any additional effort is needed to push the button to release the pin or other concerns since your installation? Does Quik-Latch provide any recommendations for keeping the locking mechanism clean and functioning properly or when they should be replaced? I would not want to be in a situation where I am not able to open my hood once these latches get some age.
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 жыл бұрын
I have noticed that sometimes there can be tension on the pins, which can make them difficult to unlacth, but it's nothing major. They can be readjusted to get rid of this issue. Also, I noticed that if I pop one side before the other, it can create tension & cause them to bind, so you just have to be mindful of things that can create tension. I don't think it's much of an issue though. I don't regret installing them at all.

If you look around on youtube, you'll find a guy that used quicklatch pins and they failed rather spectacularly, and totaled a really nice car as a result (the hood came back and crushed his roof line). The guy in question is in Scotland, and his car is (was) orange. Search for "quicklatch hood pin fail". There's another one where they failed on a rally car ("Hood Pin Fail - Rally Colorado") during a rally event. No f*ckin way I'd put them on my car.

Corrosion factors are not assumed by materials touching similar materials but are affected by the environment cause of corrosion like soapy solvents or salts seen in modern deicers especially Halite seen in chemistry 103. Quick latch is a great secondary latch option but not a primary. One thing to always cover is that aside from aesthetics and ease of use is first safety. Many Kids rely on youtube these days and they mostly rely on internet data for mechanical ability especially when filling the forward spaces in their bumper area with intercoolers they likely try to remove the factory latch assembly. Good informative video on your opinion and pros and cons. BUT please stress safety.

I am not responsible for anyone modifying their car in any way shape or form. I do not foresee Quik-Latch failing as they are designed to be used on legit race cars & can withstand more that 300lb of force each, IIRC. I am not anybody's dad & I'm not here to spoon feed anyone. Always mod responsibly, but if anyone jacks something up, I'm not responsible. Lol.

I never once said hood pins were invented in the 2000s, what video did you watch? & yes, the first Fast film did largely bring them into the mainstream where people started putting them on their bone stock cars--nothing I said was inaccurate. What are you even ranting about & bringing generation stuff up out of nowhere for? Sounds like you're projecting...you definitely sound a little bitter to me. 😂

The point of hood pins is actually supposed to be a safety feature to keep your hood from flying off when you reach higher speeds, which a factory lock sometimes isn't that secure.

Pretty much anyone over the age of 30 can drive a manual and probably have owned one at one point in their life. They are lesser value than autos and just old tech...doesn't mean anyone is or isnt a car person just because they dont have to push in a clutch to start and shift anymore than someone who has A/C, fuel injection, or a vehicle that doesnt have a hand crank on their ride....its just new tech. I would only buy a car with a standard transmission if brand spanking new. People tend to want to redline every gear and you dont really know how worn the engine and transmission is worn out....not so much with an auto.

@@jdigitalseven7 manuals are rare and more expensive in my area. I have no idea why. Probably because barely anyone buys them lol (problem for shipping one in if your a dealer). Also, they maybe more expensive for the older ones, because people think they are cooler, so they get more demand value from rarity. I own a manual and an auto, and I have both built up. Auto shifts faster. Stick gives you more control.

Neomanis Kennedy Not that I know of. All pins that I have seen are visible from the outside. The Quik-Latches are probably the most discreet, but are still noticeable. I suppose you could modify the underside of the hood to allow for a secondary OEM-style latch with a cable or something that would work in conjunction with the standard latch.

It really should be repaired properly, and the latch should be replaced if damaged. Hood pins may work, but if the hood is messed up, that can cause issues with alignment of the pins and even put uneven stress on them.

You’re saying that quick latches don’t need extra steps to open your hood, when in fact it’s the same. Unlatch your factory latch and then unlatch the hood pin! In fact, it’s that way with any fucking hood pin system! So this point is moot on any of the pros or cons!
@jsimmonstx
@jsimmonstx 4 жыл бұрын
Everything you stated is just your opinion, and you've cited no tangible reasons why one style of hood pin is "better" than any other. There are only two styles by the way - slide-pin and ball. The slide-pin style has a number of sub-categories, and which one you buy depends entirely on how much money you want to spend. How much money you spend dictates the quality and materials used. Cheap $12 pins you get from Autozone are going to be all steel (which will eventually rust). Up a notch ($25 or so), and you at least get stainless pins and lock rings. Go up to the $50 range, and you get aluminum, and of course AeroCatch which are $75 and up. If you wanna spend way too much, you can get Shelby or Hotchkiss pins ($100-150), but they are actually no better at retaining your hood than more moderately priced parts. See? It's all about money. As far as QuickLatch is concerned, I would never put a ball-style hood pin on a car that is truly fast. If the latch lets go, you're fucked.
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 4 жыл бұрын
jsimmonstx Interesting comment seeing as most of what you just stated is just YOUR opinion, but ok... Lol. I actually gave several pros and cons to each style of pin. Quick latches are as strong if not stronger than any other pin because of how they are designed and the materials used. The QL-50’s hold 700lbs of force each, so unless you are expecting 1,400+ lbs of force to affect your hood and only your hood, I wouldn’t worry about it. Lol. In fact, they are used on the McLaren P1GTR, so I’m sure they are more than adequate for most cars. www.quik-latch.com/quik-latch-applications-on-mclaren-p1gtr.html

@@hawkeyestiguy - At least two videos showing quick latch pins failing. That's more than just opinion - it's tangible proof that they aren't adequate (especially if you only use one set). It doesn't matter how much force they can hold. When you're driving, shit happens, and a ball-style hood pin can (and will) eventually fail due to vibration. AeroCatch or the "F&F uncool" ones are the hands-down best choice for hood retention because the slides don't need lanyards to be permanently attached to the car, and the locking pins won't back out of the pins (unless you completely bork the installation). When you're talking about safety, "not cool enough" should *never* be a consideration. Just sayin...

jsimmonstx Based on what you have said in your last two comments, I’m honestly not even sure you are talking about the same product I am or that you have watched my video. Who ever heard of using multiple pairs of hood pins on a daily driver? Lol. The only “quick latches” I have heard of failing are cheap ebay knockoffs, so if you care to provide links to the vids of genuine Quik-Latches that were installed correctly failing, I’d like to see it. Saying that literally 2 have failed out of the thousands sold/installed is also an incredibly poor argument to make. Listen, I’m not looking to have a pissing contest with you. Lol.
