INTP here. My parents forced me to play Judo from a very young age as they said I was very nice and a need to toughen up. I can't explain how much it helped me in my life.I have super self confidence because I know that I got hit before so many times in training that no one will ever be able to to anything.The fear barrier is gone. I would really recommend Judo as it's a contact sport. It makes you toughen up.

I have always loved martial arts, and when I was younger I earned a black belt in taekwondo. When I turned back toward the hobby later in life, I was lucky enough to find a very traditional dojo that had an MMA program. The structure offered by an intense dojo setting was a requirement for me, I can't stand the thought of treating my training as another day at the gym. We spend about a third of our time on striking (shotokan, boxing, and Muay Thai), a third on grappling (no gi BJJ and wrestling), and a third of our time on CrossFit and performance under extreme duress. I also lucked out in that my sensei is an ENTJ. This man tracks every piece of data that could be used to enhance our performance.

BJJ, especially no gi. Everything has an answer, the more you know and practice the better you get. It’s systematic and then allows for creativity. After that add a stand up that has lots of stress and practical testing. You should be pretty solid.

@@jessenoreligionno5731 INTPs are not outside-the-box thinkers? I disagree. In the moment, yes that is true. However, when it comes to studying and planning, INTPs are absolutely outside the box thinkers. BJJ (like other competitive grappling arts) allows a lot of opportunities for INTPs to gain an advantage in understanding the system and preparing a creative gameplan that other people will not be ready to deal with. BJJ (and other competitive grappling arts) is actually more about preparation than in-the-moment reaction which is actually really good for INTPs. Just an example, I have a friend who trains and competes in BJJ. I believe he is either an INTJ or INTP, but I need to revisit his personality type to be sure. He spent a lot of time outside of practice developing a sophisticated gameplan centered around the "Omoplata", and before he was even a black belt (he might have still been a purple belt around this time), his instructor was devoting time in practices to escaping the Omoplata specifically because my friend was catching everyone in it, even the more senior students. That was not because he was some kind of amazing athlete with amazing reactions, but because he had amazing preparation and real expertise in the techniques he studied.

@@leavemealone2006 For the application of just sparring, you are correct. However, you are neglecting the fact that in an actual fight, your opponent will also be studying you and developing a new strategy against you. This suits INTJs (like myself) well because we think about every foreseeable possibility and plan multiple strategies. I.e. ' if he does this, then I'll do this ' and so forth. Your friend is probably an INTJ. An INTP is more likely to have a set plan of attack based on the knowledge of the style. They've planned to do one thing not multiple different things. INTPs master systems as they are, not as they could be. INTJs think about every possible improvement that can be made to a system.

BJJ changed me, an INFP, for the better. It’s practical. Most fights end on the ground, so it’s definitely worth knowing what to do down there. I actually had to use it to protect myself from a dude who attacked me and probably had like 60lbs on me. I was punched unconscious and woke up to him choking me, but the fight still ended with him retreating after I had him in a triangle hold/probably seeing stars. Same dude attacked me again and I ended up with stitches in my face and coughing up blood for a few hours, but I still fought him off again. He really did want to hurt me. I’m was 105lbs at the time. Tiny.

Ultimately I think the best martial art is the one you enjoy while also being effective (it does no good picking an efficient martial art if you are just going to quit). I think BJJ all by itself is not practical for street fighting (especially with crowds where another attacker can come from any angle... you're on the ground grappling with your opponent and then bam someone else hits you in the head and it's over...you want to stay mobile and on your feet). However combined with another striking martial art I can see BJJ as a game changer. Some form of grappling I think is necessary because if you don't know how to defend against a simple heel hook or double leg takedown you will be in trouble. I wrestled for 4 years in high school which really helped me with a good foundation for grappling but 1 year of BJJ really helped bring it all together. I've always hated fighting off my back but BJJ helped me overcome that even though it's still not my preference (on top of all the varied submissions BJJ teaches which makes grappling more effective). I also took 2 years of Muy Thai and for an INTP like myself, CS Joseph is right with how aggressive the muy thai style is (so is freestyle wrestling or folk wrestling). While counter intuitive to Intps (as they tend to think more defensively), it definitely helped with my stand-up particularly with low kicks, knees and elbows. Now I just mainly do boxing classes and occasional light sparring (no punching to the head) where I can practice a more defensive style. I feel with a foundation of wrestling with a bit of BJJ, some knowledge of Muy Thai, and boxing that I have basic self defense covered against most people. I am also over 6ft2 200 pounds so my size matters (which I also think has allowed me to entertain more aggressive styles like freestyle wrestling and Muy Thai in the past with the ability to take more punishment than your average sized or smaller person).

I have been exposed to a number of different styles, and more than anything, the instructor is the most important aspect. For example, I initially didn't want to do Taekwondo, but I encountered an instructor who had a very realistic outlook, cross-trained, and discussed the theory and "why" behind things. So I took TKD from him and it turned out to be a great choice. So far, grappling like Judo and Wrestling have been my favorite styles because of their extremely technical and logical nature. Generally, grappling is the most like "physical chess" and gives an INTP the most ability to achieve success through superior knowledge and research. However, in spite of loving grappling, I have left a gym before because the instructor was way too spontaneous and unsystematic, and the overall environment was too hot-headed. While practicing live, everyone was just basically trying to win and didn't have much of a learning attitude, do it was very difficult to work on specific things. People just wanted to "fight" and not truly develop. I think that style is important, but not as important as the instructor and school/gym environment. (Also, for practical self-defense, try to avoid Aikido or Wing Chun. You have to get very lucky to find an instructor in these styles who will actually make it practical. They are great for theory and kinesthetic awareness, but generally are almost useless in a real confrontation unless you have a really special instructor who can properly prepare you for an encounter. I would say do Judo instead of Aikido: also very good with theory, technique, kinesthetic awareness and balance, but you actually get good at applying the concepts to an intelligently resisting opponent. Judo is definitely not a "self defense" style, but it is much better than Aikido in this regard. Wing Chun can be good if taught by a very good instructor, but usually, practitioners of Wing Chun have terrible footwork and lack the sense of timing and rhythm necessary to be successful in striking. You also won't know what the heck to do if a decent grappler gets ahold of you)

As an INTP who has experience in martial arts, I actually disagree with Chase about this point. Krav Maga is a great system for self defense, but it is relatively shallow compared to more focused styles that actually compete. If you are an INTP, you might get bored of Krav Maga by itself because you have a fundamental need to thoroughly understand systems, and systems that don't have a lot of depth or complexity can become uninteresting. I am speaking from experience here :) That doesn't mean that Krav Maga is super shallow or bad. It is actually a very good system for self-defense as well as getting in shape. I think it is fun, but because there is no competition, there is no driving motivation for practitioners to dig deeper into the art and techniques. There is no need to be creative. You just repeat the techniques in the system under a pressure situation until you get really good at applying them. So yes, very good for self-defense, but not intellectually stimulating compared to competitive martial arts like BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, boxing, MMA, etc. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do Krav Maga, but if you can afford the time and money, you should complement it with a style that focuses on an aspect of fighting that you like. I would say do something else, and add Krav Maga if you have the time and money. (Also, that is BS about Krav Maga being "illegal" in MMA. It is something that Krav Maga instructors say to sell their classes. It is similar to the absolutely ridiculous idea that some martial art instructors had to register their arms and legs with the police department as weapons, absolute BS and lies used to sell classes. There are people who practiced Krav Maga and also competed in MMA. There are certain techniques in Krav Maga that are against the rules in MMA, but that is true about many other Martial Arts as well)

As an INTP I would agree that Karate is not ideal, Krav Maga is very good, especially in Israel (of course :P) but I would add Taekwondo to your list as it's challenging and high discipline martial art with "Katas" similar to Karate. Taekwondo will improve also strength especially lower body and abs, stamina because of all of the jumping and kicking, flexibility- because all the stretching for high kicks and it's practical martial art. I'm the only one who has Taekwondo kicks in the Krav Maga gym :) .

For sure. Wrestling and boxing as a foundation for self defense are tough to beat. I know freestyle as opposed to Greco but Greco is great for stand up grappling and controlling the upper body which can be more functional in street fighting if there are crowds and danger can come from any direction. Greco is very demanding though and can require quite a bit of physical strength. Greco guys are beasts.

@leavemealone2006
@leavemealone2006 2 жыл бұрын
I think wrestling is great for INTPs as long as you have a decent coach. I am an INTP, and it is probably my favorite martial art and sport. Since practices and drills usually focus more on concepts than specific techniques (at least at the college level, this is true), it allows room for intellectual exploration and creativity while maintaining structure. At least in my experience with college wrestling, we had a lot of drills that focused on a specific part of the game, but allowed us to choose the specific techniques we wanted to use. We would do hand fighting drills, but we could use various ties, clears, etc. We would do takedown drills, and we got to choose which takedown we wanted to work on. It allowed plenty of creative freedom, but enough structure to be systemic. Also, since many wrestlers focus more on explosiveness and toughness, this gives an INTP a good opportunity to gain a significant advantage in knowledge and gameplanning. For example, many wrestlers think of hand fighting as just setups for takedowns, but is a rich and complicated part of wrestling in its own right with many opportunities to apply techniques others are not familiar with etc. I started to explore and develop the Russian tie because it gave a huge advantage, but many wrestlers were not very familiar with it. I also figured out ways to improve control techniques like underhooks and overhooks that I still haven't seen anyone teach. I have been able to get many grapplers who are better, faster, and stronger than me into bad positions simply because I have become an expert in hand-fighting and most moves that they do are setups for me to put them into bad positions. Although wrestling is often thought of as mainly a strength and toughness sport (and these are very important aspects of it), it is also an extremely technical sport with a very sophisticated variety of techniques to study and be creative with. Along with Judo, BJJ, and Sambo, wrestling is probably the closest thing to "physical chess" there is. The problem with wrestling, at least where I live, is that it is not easy to find places to practice as an adult. I have found Judo to be a good alternative. BJJ is too, but BJJ gyms are usually at least twice as expensive as Judo clubs, and BJJ guys tend to neglect takedowns which is one of my favorite parts of wrestling. Also, sometimes MMA gyms will have a good wrestling coach and dedicated wrestling practice.

Wrestling is probably the best grappling foundation you can have for self defense especially if you want to stay on your feet (or if you want to take down your opponent where there are no people around and you are certain that there are no other threats). The only problem is the lack of knowledge of submissions that a grappling martial art like BJJ provides. However if you are well versed in freestyle wrestling and combine it with a stand-up striking art like boxing you will likely be able to handle yourself against most opponents. Big fan of freestyle wrestling. I did it for years growing up as an INTP. :)

More important than the style is the instructor and the community at the school. If you are doing this hoping what you learn has the potential to be practical outside of the school, then avoid theoretical arts like Aikido or Wing Chun unless you find an incredible instructor like Alan Oors or Luke Holloway who can make it practical. Otherwise, most styles are going to be fine, but the instructor and the community at the school will have a much bigger impact on how much you guys enjoy it and how useful it is outside of the school.

For Street Situations, I guess Aikido...the style of not giving that much damage but can take the enemy down and lose the weapon they are using.
@leavemealone2006
@leavemealone2006 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Most Aikido is very theoretical and doesn't actually prepare you to use the techniques in a real situation. In a real self-defense situation, you will be trying to control or outwit an individual who will be actively trying to injure or even kill you and who will probably be trying to fake you out and do things you are not expecting. This is something you can't 100% prepare for, but Aikido generally doesn't have this at all, not even 5 or 10%. You might get very lucky and find an instructor who can actually prepare you, but probably not. I agree with your point about being able to control someone without seriously damaging someone, but Judo or BJJ (or Sambo or wrestling etc) is going to prepare you far better for this than Aikido. The reason why is that in these competitive grappling arts, you are actually practicing controlling someone who is actively trying to beat you. In Aikido, you learn the theory about control and you learn and practice techniques for controlling; however, you never practice ACTUALLY CONTROLLING someone who is actively trying to get the better of you which is the most important part of the whole thing. To anyone who is interested in doing Aikido for self-defense, please save yourself the wasted time and do Judo instead. Judo has basically the same general theory and many of the same techniques, but is actually useful. (The one exception is if you find a truly practical instructor who is actually going to prepare you for an aggressive attacker who is going to try to fake you out and do things you are not expecting)

Tai Chi would be the martial art most closely matched to the personality type, but would be essentially completely ineffective, Aikido done properly would be a good effective fit, Judo would be more effective but being more physical than cerebral would lie slightly outside of an INTPs comfort zone. INTPs don't have the physique to make Kung Fu work. BJJ, Karate, and Taekwondo etc are for the chimps as far as an INTP is concerned.

Most people think he was an ISTP, but Chase thinks he is an ENTP. Most people in the typing community think that if anyone is a good athlete, then they must be an ISTP, which I think is BS. I personally think that Bruce was too theoretical and systematic to be an ISTP, but I might be wrong about that

Yup, ENTP. Check out Warrior within to hear about the JKD philosophy.
