When you're at a doctor's visit, you don't send the doctor your questions ahead of time so they can give you the perfect answers during your appointment. German speech pathologist here who also deals with swalloing issues: you actually can swallow with an open mouth it's just waaay harder, because usually you need an "under pressure" in your mouth to get your bolus (what you ate) into your throat. That's wgy it's so hard to manage it. Of course, swallowing is way more complex than that but that may be an answer why you can barely swallow with an open mouth :)

Just some informal experimentation, BUT as long as I could reach a significant portion of my tongue to press against the roof of my mouth, I could trigger the corresponding cascade-sequence of muscular contractions and swallow. I legitimately have to look UP and open WIDE to have real trouble at it... BUT I don't think anybody should be doing anything that resembles eating or drinking with their head all the way back and their mouth open as far as they can stretch it and attempting to swallow at the same time anyway. I just do NOT see any good reason for it, or anything good to come of it... Might help (in my case) to admit that I can fit half the can of soda into my mouth, open it with my tongue, and guzzle the contents... a stupid (quite literally) parlor/party stunt that you probably shouldn't be attempting either... It's the kind of dumb-ass thing I figured out (yes, there was much training) with beer in college... Yes, young adult male humans may well be THE stupidest creature on earth. ;o)

My grandpa was resuscitated when he had a DNR. He had a second heart attack (was in advanced renal failure too) and coded en route to the hospital. There was a paperwork mix-up and while my grandmother was trying to tell them to stop, they kept working on him for fifteen minutes, at which point he regained vitals. Despite being legally dead for 15 minutes, he had no lasting side effects and lived nearly another year before his heart finally couldn't keep up with his kidney failure. It was a blessing that they couldn't find the DNR and it gave us the whole summer with him and he made it to the family reunion the following weekend. He was midway through mowing the lawn when he collapsed, and that man would NEVER leave his yard messy. RIP.

In regards to the bath: I was always told to bath in "lukewarm" water, as it's not hot enough or cold enough to shock your system. Also, bathing while ill, in my personal opinion, has always felt relaxing and made me feel better because I felt fresh and clean, having washed off some of the feeling of sickness. Whether or not it has any medical benefits is beyond me, but it definitely feels nice.

I love the fact that Doctor Mike admits that he doesn't know something, and doesn't give false information or a very vague answer which wouldn't help anyone. Another fact that I like about him is that he isn't going to judge a patient or be negative about them. I've had multiple friends tell me to not go to certain doctors because they'll shame you for what's wrong with you. I've also come to love the fact that he Mike doesn't shy away from the topic of any private areas, like I've seen many people do over the years. In my opinion, THAT'S an ideal professional. Oh, btw I've got a question. Is it true that no one can swallow and breath at the same time ? If someone can, or is claiming to be able to, are they lying, or is it an unusual talent they posses ? And yes, I LOVE the Peewoops, they're a part of what makes this channel unique!

optical engineer here! To elaborate on why squinting can help you see clearer, when you squint you are effectively changing the aperture size of your eye, just like in a camera. This means that when the aperture is smaller you are allowing for a greater depth of focus and therefore you should be able to see a bigger range of objects in focus. This is the same effect when you stop down a camera lens from f1.4 to f16. Suddenly an image where only your subject is in focus changes to a scene where everything from the foreground to the background objects is in focus.

I got a really bad UTI my senior year of high school. The ER staff checked everything from testicular torsion to a urine sample before deciding on an STI. The kicker was that I was completely a virgin. As a 19 year old guy at the time, they refused to believe I wasn't getting it on at every opportunity (waited until I was married a decade later). They even had the audacity to tell me to warn my partners. Yes, people should be straightforward with their doc. But the doc needs to listen and be respectful.

They need to cover their bases. They can’t be certain you aren’t being 100% honest so it’s in their best interest to stress the point especially with that age group since young adults are the most at risk due to amount of sexual activity, education, impulsivity, etc with that age group. Don’t take it personally, they’re just doing their job.

I live in a country where it's not common to snip the boys. I've had many bfs and we talk freely. And talk freely with many men. None have ever had UTI. I had an issue when I was ~15-16 (jaundice, super yellow pee, stomach pain, etc.) and the doctor refused to believe that I wasn't a raging alcoholic because he figured it was ruining my liver. He even forced my mom to leave the room to try to coax me into being more honest. I'm 27 now and still haven't drank any alcohol (or done any drugs). I very much understand the CYA aspect of practicing medicine in a very litigious country, but I agree that docs need to be respectful, too. I was made to feel like I was lying when I wasn't. lol Still never found out what the problem was. And kudos on the abstinence. That's badass.

I'm a firefighter who works with EMS a decent amount on cardiac calls( the way our department runs) and they use the Lucas device. From what I can tell it does really well auto adjusted to a lot of different sizes to get the proper depth compressions. Sadly there is definitely a size limit that it can't go past the way it is built. I'm not sure if other companies have made advances for those with larger bodies but ours currently would not work on someone that size.

One of my worst encounters with a doctor was when I was 19 and I got a bad STI. But- I had NEVER been sexually active. My doctor asked me, and when I told her this, she rolled her eyes. She did not believe me, despite me telling her I was telling the honest truth. She prescribed me medicine for it and told me I was ‘legally obligated’ to tell any sexual partners I had about this. I was so upset and invalidated and hurt because she just refused to believe me and treated me terribly because of it. Another doctor, that I told about this later, confirmed my suspicion- I had recently taken a bath at my dads house, and he is someone who is.. very active with various people. It’s likely I got that STI from the tub.

The explanation about the funny bone was really enlightening, I‘m sad I never knew about it earlier. My dad died from a specific kind of cancer in his upper lung that spread into his shoulder and is known to do severe nerve damage. What started out as „muscle“ pain in his arm quickly developed into nerve pain that was so hard to control because the sensation kept changing the more the nerves were affected. The doctors tried so many different pain medications but he always said it felt like something was „working“ inside his arm (common descriptions were bees or ants) that drove him crazy. Sometimes massages helped, other times even the slightest touch against his skin would make him cry out in pain. I never actually understood and often wondered how he must’ve felt but imagining him experiencing that funny bone sensation 24/7 is so painful and I wish I could’ve done more to relieve the pain😔

For instance if I get sick it normally results with pneumonia if I lay in bed from being in pain the hot soak helps to keep me mobile making it easier to cough the nasty up instead of it draining to my lungs when laying down.

When I had mono at 14 years old, my temperature was 106 degrees and rising. My mother was suggested to put me in a normal temperature bath (~100 degrees) which helped to bring my fever down to 101-103 degrees and gave me significant relief. Considering we were warned that brain damage could occur at 108 degrees, I think this bath was extremely helpful and perhaps life saving. It helped to keep my fever within a safe range when my body wasn’t able to regulate it properly.

In all fairness, he was talking about regular fevers and not life threatening fevers. We have a habit of trying to get rid of fevers the second we hit 100 degrees and we take Tylenol or jump in a cool bath. His point was let your body fight the way it’s designed to. That’s completely different from a life threatening fever.

Dr Mike. I can swallow with my mouth open. I just demonstrated that for my daughter by chugging my bottle of flavored water - pouring it into my mouth with my head tipped back and swallowing it with no issues. I learned to do this in army basic training when they used to make us drink canteens full of water very quickly. I can either swallow it, or literally open my esophagus and pour it directly into my stomach.

We use the LUCAS at my hospital but you can’t use it on people who are very large because it won’t fit around their chest properly. You have to push really hard to get good compressions on large people; we usually just have to change out compressors very frequently because it gets very tiring. We also work as a team and keep an eye out to make sure the person compressing IS getting the depth they need to. And as a small person, I try to let larger people do compressions when possible, and I help with other things like recording, shocking, or meds. But if I have to do compressions, I get my knees in the bed next to the patient so I can get the leverage I need to do it right.

For the first question: When you swallow, other than the movement that happens on your throat region, your tongue also pushes back everything in your mouth. One of my professors mentioned before that squinting usually helps because poor vision is usually caused by an error of refraction, meaning the light is not focused properly on the retina, making vision blurry (side note: this is why visual acuity tests involve a pin hole test where you look through a pin hole). Squinting is kind of like a reflex reaction that recreates the "pin hole" effect, so that most of the light that enters the eye are parallel rays through the center of the eye that need less redirection from the lens.

EMT here! That CPR machine is called a LUCAS, it is very helpful because it gives us a break from doing compressions and frees up an extra set of hands for us to bag the patient with a breathing device or for the paramedics to intubate, give an IV, etc. However, there is a weight and size limit on it, so using it on someone the size of Andre the giant would most likely not be possible because he could not fit on the backboard that comes with it, as well as the sides of the device would not fit around his body.

For DNR's, it really depends on where you live. For example, here in Canada (Ontario specifically), DNR's mean as much as a bushell of kale. The law says that you should ignore DNR's and proceed with the proper care for the victim. However, it may differ based on where you live. So it is really important to check stuff like this. A google search should get you the answers you need about your specific location.

Here in the Netherlands it depends on your role. If you are not a medical professional and you start CPR on someone with a DNR you are not at fault. If you find the DNR necklace whilst performing CPR you may stop, but if you find that difficult, you may also continue CPR and leave the decision to stop CPR to the medical professionals. There are specific rules on what constitutes a valid DNR. If you stop CPR because of a non-valid DNR you could be at fault for failing to help a person in need. Also it can be emotionally difficult to just stop CPR and watch someone die. So that's why as a lay person you may leave that decision to the professionals.

Regarding squinting, that's more optics than medicine: to form a clear image, you need to be able to guarantee that all of the light falling on a given part of your sensor came from a single direction. A lens is one way to do this. Another way to do it is to look through a smaller opening, with the caveat that this reduces the total amount of light you take in, so it doesn't really work if it's dark.

The protein window is a classic bro science myth. If you eat enough protein, spread out during the day, it really doesn't matter that it's right after your workout. For example the advise to not artificially lower fever is relatively recent, even though it was common in the past. Another example is the relatively recent advise to _not_ use cough syrup if you have a cold (cough syrup does nothing that a tea with honey won't do, and is only more detrimental than beneficial to your health). Some time ago I had a radial head fracture (a fracture of the end of the radius bone that's closest to the elbow). The traumatologist told me that for the longest time the arm would be completely immobilized for weeks because of that type of fracture, but that nowadays that's not recommended. That's because not only does it not help, but in fact it may cause a reduction in the mobility range of the elbow. Instead, nowadays it's recommended to just leave it as it is and periodically (and carefully) move the arm to maintain its mobility. This was, once again, one of those things that medical practice had been doing for decades and decades based solely on presumptions and assumptions, not based on actual clinical testing.

Many other industries are practicing the same concepts. Food industry touts fat as bad and sugar as essential, because of the fraudulent Seven Countries Study published back in the 1970s. Climate Change activists & globalists demonize meat and put sugar on a pedistool. Sugar is the new cigarette. Tell me, throughout all history what Apex Predator has survived, let alone thrived off the consumption of plants(vegetables & fruits)? Even bears know how to utilize sugar in berries to stock up on fat for hibernation, but we eat these things every week if not everyday in many different forms(anything that contains Carbs). We are all addicted to sugar. Unless you're a conscience carnviore, strict carnivore, or on the Lion Diet you wont recognize the addiction, because you've been addicted your whole life. You might recognize symptoms: insatiable appetite just after eating, anxiety/depression, body aches, athritis & joint pain, sleep apnea, And it doesn't help with mass marketing & propaganda, so prevelent in society. Marketing is how they convince the public. Marketing is the propaganda wing of every business. Be vigilant and discern between what's real and what's fake. Good luck!

you can swallow with your mouth open! it was actually one of the exercises in my treatment with a fonoaudiologist (for a lisp lmao). she told me the correct way to swallow is actually to move only the back portion of your tongue, but most people swallow incorrectly, using other mouth and face muscles as a crutch - for instance, pursing the lips and clenching the cheeks as they do it. we slowly get used to doing that, but when your tongue is strong enough, you can clamp it to the roof of your mouth in a way that allows you to hold liquid and swallow with your mouth open - and that was actually the "final test" on the tongue strenghtening regimen lmaoo

Yup, I concurr. I can swallow the way you describe it in the "final test". Also. Correct me if I'm wrong but... when drinking from a bottle or mug isn't the mouth partially open while swallowing? Or do some people pour content in mouth, close the mouth, then swallows and repeats this until satisfied? :o

I will always remember the part of the elbow that the ulnar nerve goes through is the olecranon. Because in one of my sister's classes while she was getting her vet tech degree her teacher referred to it as the "ow-lecranon." And I think anyone who has hit that part of their elbow will know why.
