I'm a software tester for the company that takes care of the other side of this: displaying! There are hundreds of individual screens and the content needs to be synced across every panel which requires some pretty niche tech. The product in question is called Matrox Convert IP, which is essentially a box that can receive video content over a network and has multiple outputs to then display said content on multiple screens while staying perfectly in sync. Pretty neat tech!
@KamyFX5 ай бұрын
So it's like a power outlet but for video, they running it on a hardware network right?, not like a live stream kind of network, If it's the latter, then very expensive software to use and maintain to broadcast these videos to each link(monitor). I also assume that each monitor has 1ms response time or less, So another thousands of 4k maybe even 8k monitors with insane Ips panels probably and very fast response time. No wonder the ufc match on September 14, 2024 will be in the sphere and the individual ticked costs from 2.7k to 11.5k usd, 2.7k being last row.

@Ftoy-OG it has to have a gpu. Everything that is displayed onto nearly any type of display is handled by a gpu. There is way to much data being displayed for it to not have a gpu. A computer has to draw an image one pixel at a time. Think of how much power it takes to draw that many pixels in one 60th of a second

That's to create 3D content thats rendered ahead of time. For real time display, NovaStar A7S receiving cards are used along with MX40 Pro LED processors - Those processors use FPGAs. NovaStar is one of the most commonly used display processors in the LED wall space.
@acex2225 ай бұрын
Thank you for actually answering the question. Do NovaStar make the panels?
@hall012355 ай бұрын
@@acex222 No, the A7S receiving cards control a series of LED driver chips that actually drive the LEDs. It's up to other display manufacturers to implement with those driver chips so that the A7S works for them. There's quite a few companies that make them - one is Unilumin. Basically every panel has a ethernet cable daisy chained, the receiving cards convert that signal to something the LED driver microcontrollers can understand. The processor is what talks to the receiving cards and has a bunch of ethernet ports on it for signaling.

As others have said, thank you for actually answering the question. It seems especially egregious that this short shows a press release stating quite clearly; 'While the Sphere doesn't use 150 graphics cards to display the content, such GPU power is needed for content generation'. Sadly it doesn't actually state; such GPU power is needed to create the content in a timely and profitable manner... 99.9999% of GPUs could render 99.9999% of the content, it's simply that it would take too long to render to be worthwhile.

My uncle was one of the communications engineers on that thing, and he said they had to create their own Camera Chip because the biggest Imax capturing chip in the world was less than half as big as they needed it to be to support the resolution at that scale.
