My Ten Tips for Whisk(e)y Beginners: (1) Remember.... Whiskey is a beverage, not a religion or political party. Don't get too hung up on it. (2) The end of the whiskey journey is death. Enjoy the process of exploration and don't be concerned with what you do and do not know or have not yet explored. (3) Spending your money on feeding your family is more important than buying the latest release from Ardbeg [or whatever your favorite distillery is], keep your priorities straight. (4) Different whiskies are suited for different places, occasions [weddings, birthdays, funerals etc.] , seasons [the heat of summer vs. the cold of winter], moods and purposes [cocktails]. (5) Beware of the hype, if you missed the opportunity to buy a particular bottle you have not missed anything. There are a gazillion other bottles out there that are just as good. (6) If you are enjoying high ABV whiskies [cask strength] occasionally recalibrate your palate by changing to lower ABV whiskies [around 46 ABV] (7) Neat, add a drop of water or on ice - it's your whiskey, drink it how you like it. (8) Google is your friend, anything you want to know about whiskey can be found by searching "What is.....?" (9) Drinking whiskey with a beard makes you look really sexy (10) The best whiskey is the one enjoyed with friends, family and other Magnificent Bastards.

I tried Monkey Shoulder based on reviews, including yours, and was shocked that I really didn't like it -- it had quite a bite compared with a bottle of Buffalo Trace that I bought at the same time. Then I read a review stating that they thought Monkey Shoulder improved significantly with water -- I added about 1/3 spring water to Monkey Shoulder and it totally changed the taste. If I hadn't done it myself, I wouldn't have believed that it was the same whiskey -- water mellowed it and brought out a sweetness that I couldn't taste straight up.

Welcome, lads...I've been on my quest since returning from the holy land in 2017. Pace yourselves. I presently have 16 bottles of single malts alone, with a 'to buy' list of eight others. One of these days, I'll attempt to become more conversant in bourbon. It used to be that I had one each of Scotch, Irish, gin, rum, and tequila, and that was my selection.

Please enjoy responsibly Whiskey newbies. i have struggled with alcoholism for years now, but have been able to overcome indulging too much thanks to friends and family. i went from 1-2 liters of Old Thompson a day and waking up not remembering where the hell i am or how the hell i got there to drinking Lagavulin or Woodford or Creek Water a few times a week. dont get me wrong. every time i take a sip i want to down the bottle and fry my brain for the night, but it makes it more worth it to me knowing that i can just sit back, enjoy, be responsible, and love it at face value. life is good, whiskey is good. love them both at the same value and neither one will be so bad. its worth it fellow Whiskey Lovers

This is my new favorite channel on KZbin. And I do not drink whiskey. I may try it again. I was that guy that you mentioned in a video you posted a while back that would go to the bar, drink whiskey, make the face, and the bartender wouldn’t help me. I may need to try some with some water to learn. This is literally the most educational channel on YT. Keep it up guys. Fantastic content.

stevestojan you need to try an old fashioned my friend. A bit of sugar, some bitters, whisk(e)y and an orange peel... the cocktail rounds off the harsher edges of the whisk(e)y and slows you to enjoy the flavours while really taming the alcohol burn.

craig foreman thanks Craig! I’m starting to branch out into more whiskeys and I’m the same as the Gentleman above, I find it a bit harsh by times as I’m used to mixing it with ginger ale, I’ve found the Old Fashioned has really helped me start to appreciate the flavour of the spirit by itself and it is making it a lot easier to try a dram neat when trying a new whiskey. Cheers brother!

Im a huge fan of craft beer, and spend alot of time touring breweries with my fiance. I started my whiskey journey by drinking McNaughton's (cheap Canadian whiskey). I made it in a Manhattan/old fashioned style drink. Then I started ordering it on the rocks when I go out, and experimenting with different "bottom shelf" whiskeys on the rocks (I always asked for a splash of bitters). Then I started watching your show and started drinking it neat. That's when my flavor palate grew! Now, I prefer it neat, and have experimented with different Scotch's and bourbons. So much love to Rex and Daniel and the Magnificent bastards! I've learned so much about the whiskey I'm drinking, and finding the whiskey that I like. I now prefer it neat. Unless its not very good whiskey, I'll drink it on the rocks. No more Manhattans and old fashioneds for me. :)

I have some suggestions for introducing someone to whisky. I am not as big of a whisky drinker as my husband, who primarily introduced me to whisky, but feel my appreciation and knowledge have come a long way. Learn about the whisky beginner's other tasting experience and food preferences, ex wine pairings, single source coffee or chocolate, do they prefer milk chocolate or dark, sweet or savory, etc. Find out their level of interest, are they trying to become a bartender, do they just like exploring different food and drink, or do they want to be able to talk intelligently about whisky to their father-in-law? Offer side by side comparisons. I think tastings are a great way to learn, whether whisky, wine, cognac, chocolate or coffee. Don't assume women will only like sweet drinks...some men seem to think that.

One of the things that I discovered that I really enjoy about a good whisk(e)y is smelling the glass after I've emptied it. It's amazing that the scent will develop and change for minutes after I've drained the glass. Being able to smell the dram without the alcohol present let's me discover aromas that I would have otherwise missed. I've sat with an empty glass for 15 minutes just appreciating the aroma of a really great whisk(e)y.

I really appreciate you guys. I started the wrong way. Straight up used it as a pain killer before I had spine surgery. I probably sound like a horrible person for saying that. But ten years later I am actually tasting the subtle differences in scotch. I was ok with blended whisky. It fit the bill, but when I got a better paying job. I opted more for older scotches and now I know more than my local booze barn. It did take me a long time to appreciate all of the flavors after the initial boozy punch.

The best advice I never got is don’t start at the liquor store. Go to a bar (if it specializes in whiskey even better) and try as many different types as you can little by little over a month. Find what you like and don’t like first, then find other distillers that are similar to what you like. Stay with that for a little while then expand. Staying out of the liquor store at first allows you to explore without buying an $80 bottle on a recommendation only to only find out you don’t like it.

Even better is finding out if there are whisky events nearby. There is a yearly one here where an entrance free of 30 euro's gets you a ton of whisky to try out. Some special ones cost one to three euro's. There's literally thousands of bottles there. It's the best thing ever.

Something i found interesting about the flavours is to tell what they are without being able to taste it, dry some of the whisky on something, maybe a paper and then smell it when its completely dry, i noticed that the homemade tinfoil funnel i made and used with some aged whiskey smells really amazing and nothing like what id consider "whisky", and nothing like wet whisky or smelling from the bottle imo

My very first whisky that I ever had was Cadk Strength Laphroaig! And I was hooked! I started eating Habaneros when I was 5 and spicy curry when I was 8! My favourite foods are Thai/Indian/Mexican/Jamaican...the spicier the better! So my friend, thought he was being a wisenheimer, thought he would "start me out" with Cask Strength Laphroaig! I was in love! That was like a Slayer "mosh-pit"! My next whisky that i tried...later that night....Scapa 18....Transcendant! That was like being at Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite! More Ballet, more delicate but a wonderful waltz of taste! So that is the story of my into to whisky!

"You are not your whiskey preference" I can relate to this, I used to tell my buddy that his refer stunk, and he would get upset about it..and I would have to remind him that he wasn't the grower, man, no need to get moody! Awesome vids guy glad I stumbled upon this.

Whisk(e)y tasting is almost definitely a process, which is not fully realized when one first begins trying it. Some fun, and interesting, tips for tasting include: smelling your arm before smelling the whisk(e)y; the neutral smell of your skin allows more flavors to pop out, swirling the whisk(e)y around your mouth to test the thickness and the heat, taking a small sip to let your mouth get used to the alcoholic taste, and taking a larger sip to let the whisk(e)y hit the back of your throat (and form a “Kentucky” sweater).

Watching two grown men doing the cinnamon challenge and not over-react is far more hilarious than any other person doing it.

"Good whisk(e)y is whisk(e)y you like to drink, the way you like to drink it" as I'm sipping on a whiskey sour cocktail made with Rich & Rare blended with Canadian mist. Also I really wish that companies were WAY more open with their blends, Also the age statement, all they have to do is make the surgeon general warning label on the back or side just a few lines bigger. Its just fascinating to me to learn where my whisk(e)y is from and whats in it and how old it is.

Even though my comment was tongue in cheek, thanks for the shoutout and using it as the example of what to be wary of.... Ps- I still dont use a lid for my glass.... even the flies need a drink every once in a while. 😉

I'm late to the game on this one, Fellas. Sorry. Great episode! I loved all the advice... or rather, the links to all the advice. This was sort of like when a sitcom does a clip episode. Not a lot of substance directly, but it references all the substantial parts, so it still ends up good for some reason. ;) The end of the episode, and the handy links in the description are truly magnificent. I'll be sending this video to some people. :) I loved the 11th hack, Rex! Well done! You learned just enough science to become dangerous. xD ;P

Rex sets its up, Daniel follows him down the rabbit hole, proprietary blend my sweet........, laughing so hard, can't f'n breath! I wonder how Rex managed to string that many dollar words together without losing it, ahh, thanks for the laugh, felt good.

My advice is it's okay to enjoy a mixed drink. I love a good old fashioned, it's important to know it can be made in a variety of ways much like your episode on the Hot Toddy. I love mine with Buffalo Trace, simple syrup, bitters and a few thin slices of orange peel. For something strange and amazing substitute the Offerman Edition Lagavulin or even the standard 16 Yr Lagavulin. Sooo good.

Just discovered this channel when I got covid (im fine) and it's helped me a lot, the only whiskey nerds I have spoken to have been the ones that look down on you because you dont know every little thing instead of enlightning you, I have always been told burboun sucks and irish is for noobs, after binge watching your channel for the last week I ended up ordrering a bottle of regular Wild Turkey 101, Redbreast 12 and a bottle of makers mark. Cant wait til the weekend when they arrive, I would never have tried these if all I did was listen to the whiskey nerds I know (they where all about the scotch and the scotch only).

On the topic of Whisk(e)y Beginners, I think it was on the Vault channel, Danial gave his choices of several whiskies as a "starter sample pack" to be used when trying to introduce someone to scotch. I was wondering if he could revisit the topic and provide the list again, or maybe an updated version?

Coming into summer here in Australia, the thing I find most useful - put your glencairn in the fridge so that when you pour it chills your whisky a little without needing to dilute it.
