Sykes also ruined a good thing when he went behind David's back during the recording of the '87 album He was terminated from the gig and rightfully so. Coverdale laughed all the way to the bank

@@javtimestwo John Sykes did ruin a good thing, but David Coverdale was not the only one laughing all the way to the bank. John Sykes also got paid extremely well for his songwriting and guitar playing on Whitesnake's 1987 studio album. It is just a shame that it happened this way. I do love the Slip Of The Tongue album, but it was nowhere close to how amazing the 1987 album was. In my opinion John Sykes band Blue Murder's first self titled debut album is more of a Whitesnake album than Slip Of The Tongue is.

Nope. While very good it marked the very start of the screeching era of Coverdale. A keyboardist's name isnt even listed. Sykes did the same thing in Thin Lizzy. Kinda ruined the classic sound with a heavy metal trip. The first Blue Murder lp however is pure brilliance. Coverdale,Moody,Marsden, Lord and Dowle ( then Paice ). Best lineup.

@@careful...Icarusthere's a reason why the 1987 album is considered their best album and went multi platinum versus the earlier, bluesy Whitesnake. Nothing against that era, but this lineup had way more energy, musicianship, and melodic sensibilities than the earlier Whitesnake.

You can't beat Neil Murray's bass sound in terms of cleanliness, headroom and just plain balls! Sounds gigantic. Rudy Sarzo might bring a lot licks, technique, stage antics and sexiness to the Whitesnake machine which is great but he lacks the loudness and heaviness of Neil Murray for sure. I was very disappointed when Sarzo replaced Neil Murray. By that time, I had purchased the entire Whitesnake catalog and I realized how awesome Neil played!! I never bought another Whitesnake album after that. I saw them twice in 1987, but my friends and i all thought that the new line up just didn't have the same power! @@caljerm Bullshit, Sarzo was and is one of the most sought after bass players ever to walk and has a rap sheet miles long of reputable and respectful collaborations and has worked with many great bands. On top of that, he learned a lot from the late, great Randy Rhoads, which if I’m not mistaken, Sykes is also a fan of. Neil Murray is a fantastic bass player, especially paired with Cozy Powell, yes the both of them bring a big sound to the band and compliment Sykes guitar tone nicely and he is better in Whitesnake I’ll give you that, but overall it’s bullshit to say he can play circles around Sarzo. Also keep in mind the number of times Sarzo has filled in and had to learn songs quickly for tours, more than you’d think. Plus just like Murray and Powell, you put Sarzo and Aldridge together and it’s the same magic. What they did for Ozzy and Rhoads, Murray and Powell did for Coverdale and Sykes. No comparison.

Exactly. I saw a show from 1988 on the Whitesnake tour for the "1987" album. Vandenberg and Campbell (two GREAT guitarists in their older bands) absolutely sucked playing Sykes' songs and the other Whitesnake material. Just awful. No heart, no soul...no feel for the music at all

ahh, rip cozy powell. going from this to ELP afterwards, and his long history before shows what an awesome gun for hire he was, and he "brought" it to every note he played, regardless of style.

Valerie .

This is good shit. I never listened to any Whitesnake before the self titled album. The 70’s rock influence on this era of the bands sound is fantastic. The Thin Lizzy, Zeppelin and Deep Purple all mashed up with a side of Rainbow. Crying n the rain existed already? Who knew?
@pekkalindqvist2001
@pekkalindqvist2001 Жыл бұрын
Crying in the rain was in 1982 album Saints and sinners, as was original Here I go again. I think I read somewhere that Coverdale thought some of the best pieces he wrote were in that album, but he wasn't pleased with playing in that album. My favourite from that album is still Victim of love.

Sykes was just one of those people in history that had all the ingredients to be world famous - but couldn't quite get there. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond his control got in the way of him reaching the top. He had the image of the ultimate rockstar, he was extremely talented and he was in the right era. But, for some reason, it never worked out for him. His guitar playing was extremely advanced, he can still go toe to toe with any shredder today. Dude had it all.
