The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Dude you gotta see Ivanchuk vs Shirov. Or Ivanchuk vs Kasparov where he basically taunted Kasparov with his knight. It’s not like one or two games decide a persons playing style, but if there are some games that get me weirdly inspired to try something insane, it’s got to be a Chucky.

The problem is that the man's surname begins with an "i" sound, so Vasyl Ivanchuk effectively sounds the same as "Vassily Ivanchuk" (whether you are Ukrainian or Russian or British or whatever!). Of course, when using his first name only, he SHOULD make the distinction, but it's VERY difficult to change the habits of decades!

I love the way Agadmator commentates on the game. He brings in the lower ratings normal club player into the game to actually understand it, and it really enjoy "those of you who only wants to enjoy the show" that makes people not feel bad that cant see the move. Tried to make the decision this time within 10 seconds and mine was Rook to b2+, not seeing the Knight covering...but I did"enjoy the show" which made me not feel bad about that terrible move in my chess. I noticed with Chucky both in Game 3 and in Armageddon that his clock management was reckless. In Game 3 he was over a minute ahead of Carlsen (around 1.30 to 30 seconds) and took an eternity over his next move. Again, towards the end in Armageddon he took too long to make decisions.

Armageddon definitely feels heavily favourable to Black, so it pretty much *is* decided by the initial coin toss at that high of a level, honestly these people could force a draw in their sleep if they wanted it from the start(there's a reason draws are so incredibly common). the 1 minute difference isn't enough by a long shot to make the difference, especially when white is forced to play so aggressively and hope for the best that some plan works out just going into shorter and shorter time formats until someone comes out on top would be enough honestly

If you saw this armageddon, they both have only about 20s on the clock and Ivanchuk had better position also confirmed by the commentators. If he would have more time I think he would win this. (When I saw my feeling was clearly that he would win for sure. I was a bit sad about.)

@@PushyPawn I actually don't think this position is worthy of resignation. Yes it's a blunder but say Qc2 or Qh4 or something. Don't take with the knight. Just protect the b1 square or something. The game can still go on. Let's say Magnus takes knight c3. Then his rook on f7 is hanging!!!
@mariovanderwal1695
@mariovanderwal1695 3 жыл бұрын
@@nazeervalli2047 Except Vasyl had to win the game, not even a draw would have been sufficient and I doubt Magnus would just hang a rook for no reason. You can play those positions on lichess 1600 rating if you want to. The world champion will not blunder that badly.

Whatever happened to bidding for time? White gets five minutes and each player tells the arbiter how much time they'd accept to play black with draw odds. Lowest time gets the black pieces and if both players make the same bid then you choose randomly.

I think that if Ivanchuk had kept his queen on the sixth rank it would have maintained the pin of Carlsen's knight against his queen. Ivanchuk could even grab the a-pawn to create a passed pawn threat. By moving the queen off the sixth rank he removed the only significant compression of Black's position.

Being a minute up in armageddon does give you opportunities i think, but they still need to be calculated, and there is many posssibility to do it wrong . How does that give you the upper hand? Black can just use almost the same amount of time to find surprising moves.. only my thoughts

It is easier to draw a game than to win and therefore to choose to play black in an armageddon game is an obvious choice to make for most players. I'm guessing MC won the toss. The style of play for black is anti-positional, defensive end welcoming to exchanges and repeating moves. I'm not sure a 1 minute advantage fairly compensates the white player, but then what other options are there?..

@Truth God For sure there's a reason for Carlson scoring the highest ELO of all times, he's probably objectively the best chess player that ever roamed the earth, however, I'd still love to see how he would compete with Fischer and Morphy on equal terms, unfortunately we'll never know but it would for sure have been the ultimate battle of titans.
@dr.bluesfield3629
@dr.bluesfield3629 3 жыл бұрын
@Truth God I wouldn't call it loathing the game of chess per se, it was more the effect of the beaten path in classical chess that bothered him, hence his invention of 960 which is actually quite a lot of fun! I would agree that Fischer in his prime would be a hard nut to crack for anyone, but similarly, the ease with which Morphy came up with the most incredible combinations, without ever studying the game, makes him another strong contender in the match of hypothetical time travelers. I agree that Capablanca is another near perfect player, I just find his style a bit too sterile and hence lacking some of the excitement of the other two.

Then after black traded the knight, he definitely wins an extra f5 rook or else gets a free knight and mess the white king position up, i think.
