How in the world could GM win any awards after cutting so many corners after 2008? Remember we taxpayers had to bail them out because he could not run their business properly. the only automaker in this country of the big three was Ford that did not need to be bailed out. That's the only award I need to stick with Ford. And before you say oh yeah Ford took the money Ford was forced to take the money. I would tell you what they invested the money in but you wouldn't believe me I'll just leave it at that. That would piss people off.

I think that is actually a throwback to decades old dependability expectations. It has validity,, just not like it used to 50 years ago. 1950's and 1960's,, absolutely normal to trade in your vehicle every year, or at most every 3 years. My father in the 20 years purchased new 12 vehicles. Things to keep in mind. Incredible manufacturing prowess coming off of WWI, tires had to be replaced every 8 to 10 thousand miles, an old and worn out vehicle had 70,000 miles on it. Almost nothing reached 100,000 miles,,, that was an old junker. The first year of ownership,, was your only year of ownership. The validity today,,, some vehicles are just rife with defects of design and workmanship "Never buy a Friday vehicle.", "Never buy a new vehicle in its first year of production." You've heard these phrases. And I, from personal and extremely painful experience, can tell you some vehicles sold new are just plain a pile of crap. I owned a brand new ***** , 1973. In its first 16 months, 40,000 miles, of ownership,, 3 alternators, 3 starters, 2 radiators, timing chain, and automatic transmission, 6 door locks,,,, Beyond the first 4 months of ownership, I spent every weekend under that POS wrenching it. Warranty support ? Exactly zero. 12,000 mile warranty and at 14,000 miles you could not keep it on the road 3 consecutive weeks. A first year dependability rating,, MAKES PERFECT sense. By the way, I have never since owned,, nor will I ever own, another anything of that big three company products,, the same one that received no mention on this list....

@@garrettmccord Sure, I'll define it for you. Cement blocks hauled,, a stack of plywood, the cement mixer, two chainsaws, 6 loads of firewood,, each a 1/2 full cord. The inside of the box if not Rhino or fitted plastic is a scratched up dented up half paintless mess. Tool boxes thrown in and out twice a day, every day. Mud on the jobsite axle deep. A truck used for work. Daily. Not some tarted up, every option, bells, whistles, computer screens, heated, power, all that junk just needs repair and does nothing for,, Does it start and run every morning. EVERY morning. So when a Honda Ridgeline with its 8 cubic foot box takes 1st? You can imagine the howls of derision. Many of the Toyotas, some excellent trucks, fall into that category as well. Because almost no tradesman will pay the extra 20,000 dollars when a perfectly good Chevy or Ford will get the same work done . Does not have to be a diesel, or a pumped up 350 dualie. I prefer small engines, two wheel drive, easy on repair and easy on fuel.

"Take care of your truck and it will take care of you" is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Yes, routine maintenance is absolutely important, BUT, manufacturing defects and poor designs are what often result in issues. Those things have little to do with proper maintinance. You can get a truck and maintain it like your supposed to, but issues still pop up.

People buy trucks for personal vehicles because they last and with current and past prices you could buy a car or suv that may last 200,000 miles if everything goes right or they can buy a truck for a little more or the same and neglect it to well over 200k. If im spending my 50k-100k im buying whats going to last. Some people buy them for saftey but they are idiots. Also where i live we get extreme weather, little suvs and cars go nowhere after a storm even with snowtires. I throw my truck in 4wd and im good unless we get some freeIng rain but in that case anyone that doesnt have 4wd and doesnt use compression braking hits the ditch or another car. Why does it bother you so much people make the smarter decision with their money. all the mall crawlers/house mothers switched to jeeps and tacomas with overlanding setups now at least in my area

I have driven over 330,000 miles in my 2000 Tundra since mile 8. No problems other than once having to remove and clean my mass airflow sensor. I do my own scheduled maintenance. However, this is NOT a heavy duty work truck. I don't haul big loads, this is just a daily driver. I'll pull a trailer to help people to move, or move myself from time to time or other small tasks but no heavy loads. I doubt I have ever hauled/pulled more than 5,000#. I bought it due to Toyota's reputation for reliability to get me to and from work or elsewhere - which is what was most important to me. Likely if I needed to do actual continuous heavy duty hauling and needed a real work truck I would look for an older (97) Dodge Diesel 3500 or 4500 due to a plethora of electronics issues in their newer trucks.

My first truck was a 1990 F-150 regular cab 8 foot bed Lariat trim with 5.0 and 5 speed manual. I sure loved that truck! Yes, it needed periodic repairs because of budget parts used by Ford, but the only reason I parted with it was because I had two sons and the four of us outgrew the truck. Then I bought a 2000 GMC Sierra King Cab 4.8L V8 that never needed a repair in 200,000 miles. It towed a 5800lb loaded travel trailer all around the country. Then we added a 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD regular cab 8 foot bed truck that only needed one repair in the last 10 years and 110,000 miles. It is only used to tow my wife's horse trailer. Then I bought a '17 Nissan Frontier 4.0 King Cab to haul my dirt bikes around. Loved the power but was never really comfortable for long drives. Traded it for a '19 Nissan Titan S trim work truck. Love the ride and the power. Hopefully it proves as reliable as my GMC trucks.

Hmmmmm I just hauled a broke down tundra to the mechanic with my 04 Silverado 1500 with 285,000 miles. I slapped my dad's f150 5.4 Triton around with the same high mileage pickup. The f150 has 125,000 and is actually taken care of, unlike my Chevy. I've had 4 Silverado/Sierra's and I blew an engine in one and a transfer case in another. Keep in mind some guys actually use the little buttons that say 4H, 2H and 4L and that little square thingy on the rear end under the bumper. I'm one of those guys so those 2 break downs are a great track record. So you and your wife Tammy can get yourself a Tundra so you can go to the bakery and get cakes and pies for your tummy.

The GMC/Silverado have the "old school" versions of the LS engine, they have been perfected after a while with specific features such as Active Fuel Management, Cylinder cutoff, Variable Valve Timing, DI, etc...... Think about it, the LS based, cast iron Vortecs (Gen IV) used in the second generation 1500 series GMC/Chevy products started to show reliability improvements. A mechanic relative of mine tells me of GM vans and pickups with over 250K milles that have yet to have engine problems (yes, radiators, alternators, voltage regulatos, ACs etc and even sometimes transmissions DO have problems before). Gen V engines came out almost at the same time that the 3rd gen pickups debuted. A new 4.3L V6 has the same HP and Torque as the previous 4800 V8 Vortec. Unfortunately, GM is trying to counteract Ford's TT 2.7 & 3.5 Ecoboost engines and diesel offerings (along with Dodge) by spending the money in a 4 cylinder turbo 2.7 and a Duramax I-6 diesel, .....Which are engines that won't even last as long as Ford's own multivalve 5.0 DOHC V8. an engine that won't last as long as a GM LS pushrod 6.2 L engine. It is only logical, what will last longer, a simpler design? Or a complicated one? .....What will be easier to work on? Turbos and multivalve engines or a pushrod engine? And cheaper? What is smaller, giving your more space in the engine bay? And lighter? How about the fact that it yields MPGs that compare with its competition favorably? I've seen engine swap videos where the 4 cylinder turbo engine of a Porsche 944 (217 HP) weighs 50 lbs more than the aluminum LS engine (400+ HP). That tells you something on how advanced the "old school" design has gotten. MEMO TO GM: DON'T ABANDON THE LS ENGINE, KEEP ADDING TO ITS DEVELOPMENT.

This really means nothing you have to take into consideration what these trucks are being used for I would say 50 to 60% of Ford trucks are used in construction and the oilfield industry about 30% of GM vehicles are used in construction and oilfield and maybe about 20% are Dodge used in the construction and oilfield although dodges gaining market share with this said you have to look at where these trucks are being used and how they are being used you hardly ever see a Toyota being used in construction or the oilfield these trucks are mostly being driven by individuals not companies who take better care of their vehicles

I have a question. You said 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks hold their value better. You also said 4wd and diesel engines get the best resale. Here's my question: what about 2500 or 3500 trucks with gas engines? How reliable are they and how do they do in resale? Can you give a sense of the difference (e.g. a 2500 with diesel depreciates X amount, and a 2500 with gas depreciates Y amount." I'd appreciate that...
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 4 жыл бұрын
Diesel vs gas is such a long discussion for a variety of factors. Maybe I should do a video. LOL. It boils down to this: on paper, it takes years longer to get a return on your investment for buying a diesel engine. However, that diesel engine will perform better for resale. I'm not talking tens of thousands, I'm talking $3-5k. Gas engines, even though they are/have become more reliable in recent years, still don't hold their value as well as gas especially in the heavy-duty truck segment. The reason boils down to how those trucks are commonly used - towing and hauling. A diesel engine will simply return better fuel economy towing versus a gas engine and while the diesel costs more to purchase and maintain, the allure of not stopping by the gas station as often wins out over the other factors.

I just sold my 02 Chevy Avalanche. It survived the last 8 years in the harsh winters in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. It had 230,000 miles, no engine or transmission issues. It had some electrical issues such as power windows and electrical switches. Day time running light sensor went out so headlights were on all the time. 14 mpg and 21 on freeway. Drove it to California and back in 2018 and got 22 mpg. It had beefy tires and I had 3 oil changes a year. The auto 4x4 setting was flawless and performed perfect in deep snow and icy roads. I installed stiffer shocks as I carried lots of firewood with it.

GM trucks the most dependable? Maybe...or Maybe Not. Either way all the 4WD Chevrolet and GMC trucks from 1988 and present are virtually worthless off-road. Why? Two Reasons. 1. IFS Axle has very poor articulation compared to the Solid Front Axle used on 4WD Ford and Dodge trucks. 2. The "low hanging" frame rails result in very poor "approach angle", "breakover angle" and "departure angle" compared to the Ford and Dodge trucks. I have seen numerous 4WD Chevrolet and GMC trucks stuck in the Rocky Mountain states...uneven terrain off-road...especially in mud and snow. In addition, it is worth mentioning two additional shortcomings. 1. The proverbial "round peg in a square hole" with the design of a round rim and tire placed in a square (rectangle) wheel well opening. VERY BAD engineering design!!! Quite PATHETIC actually. 2. Some people with the 4WD Chevrolet and GMC trucks install high lift kits and still only use a 33 or 35 inch tire.....and have poor "center of gravity". Have seen those 4WD Chevrolet and GMC trucks roll off-road.....destroying the truck. The 4WD General Motors trucks are nothing more than little girl "car like" trucks.....only good for hauling groceries and a few items from home improvement stores......on paved roads with occasional snow pack. In short, 4WD GM trucks are JUNK!!!

I'm not surprised that Toyota did so well. I was surprised that Ford didn't fare better in the full size segment. The thing is, if you're "just" looking at reliability, then Toyota is going to be on top of the list pretty much all the time. There are exceptions but they are few and far between. If you look at the Tundra's capabilities compared to GM and Ford, it doesn't always do quite as good. Where Ford got most of it's points was with the old Ranger, but correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't that old Ranger based on a Mazda truck?
