I was this typical growing middle class humble 15-years old world kid during this classic intricate trending time. And this song marked my love for the Golden Years of the 1970's --- the height of counterculture change for global peace, rock, jazz, folk protest songs, Apple 2e, Visicalc, Yoga and Meditation, higher consciousness book collections, faded jeans, concerts and great jamming parties. Life adventures then were altogether then so easy. Henceforth, the golden year. (please click photo image to play this wonderful KZbin video music) .

todd r = GENIUS> I hope you dive into his catalog. It's huge, diverse and brilliant. there aren't many areas of music that Todd HASN"T ventured into...from pop, soul, progressive rock, blues, pop rock, singer/songwriter, acapella....name it..he's done it...except maybe country (unless you consider the song Range War....which is brilliant). he's done many albums where he sang and played all the parts. This song was his first song written..he was 18 and wrote it about a girl he was in love with, but when the father of the girl saw todd he forbade her from seeing him any more. his first few albums, she was was his muse....but after this one things got VERY strange....and incredible

Everyone has rightly mentioned Rundgren's career as a singer/songwriter but he was also a brilliant record producer for many acts like The New York Dolls, for example. A little bit of trivia for you, the sound of the motorcycle on Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" is made by Todd on a guitar.

Harri, patron here. Real Man by Todd Rundgren requested earlier this month. Can't wait for your reaction and glad youre heading in the Todd direction. Hello, It's Me is phone call to have "the talk" breaking up with the girl. It was also the first song Todd wrote. It went to number 5 on Billboard. It takes most songwriters 100's of songs to get one on the chart if you're lucky. Took Todd one try. Todd is an absolute genius.

You should listen to the original version which also was done by Todd when he was in the group NAZZ! In 1968 Todd Rundgren released 'Open My Eyes' as a single with his band NAZZ. on SGC (Screen Gems Columbia) records. The song was a flop peaking at #112 nationally & received no airplay in Philly. A DJ at a Boston radio station accidentally played the flip side 'Hello It's Me' on the air & decided to add it to the stations playlist. The song took off & reached #1 on their playlist prompting other area stations to add it & it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1969 charting 7 weeks & peaking at #71. Back in Philly both cuts were getting airplay on a new rock radio station WMMR-FM by late Summer. The local Top 40 stations noticed & started playing both tracks in December. The two-sided monster would reach #2 on WFIL in early 1970. The record (S.G.C. 001) would enter the Hot 100 once again with 'Hello It's Me' on January 17, 1970, chart for 6 weeks & reach a new peak of #66. It's interesting that although the label had cosmetic changes during the run, they never released new commercial copies & kept the same number.

Interesting note. the child in the pictures shown is the actress Liv (Rundgren) Tyler. Her mother model Bebe Buell was a longtime girlfriend of Todd's.and she had a fling with Steve Tyler of Aerosmith. But Todd raised her and paid for he education, and to this day Liv regards Todd as Dad even though she didn't learn the truth about her biological father until about age 12. When she got older she changed her name to add Rundgren as her middle name. As the saying goes, "Any man can be a father but it takes a real man to be a Dad". Moving along here's one you'll like. Daryl Hall took his crew to Todd's house in Hawaii and recorded one of my other favorite Todd songs there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGWbXn5vr5J7d5Y

I think both parts you think you hear are the one person. My opinion. Jazz is a very natural place for a musician to explore, its expanded palette of harmonic possibilities yields subtle emotional colorations difficult to convey within the confines of a major/minor dichotomy. Another great Todd song? 'Couldn't I Just Tell You'. Love this one, tons more. ;>D

Todd is my All-Time Favorite Musician (I chickened out of a chance to meet him at a concert when I was six and still regret it; in my defense, I was six). He's a very deep and very underrated rabbit hole in his own right, and you've also encountered his work as a producer (Bat Out of Hell, "We're an American Band"). You'd like "Just One Victory" or "The Want of a Nail," I bet. Fun Fact: He signed Liv Tyler's birth certificate, knowing the odds she wasn't his biokid were very high, and played an active part in raising her for several years. These days she's like 'cool, two dads!'

This is his first produced song, he wrote it for his first love who was loving him until she took him home to meet her parents and her father absolutely forbade her dating a Long Hair and she never spoke to Todd again... It broke his heart. He's telling her he didn't want her to do anything different than she needed to do, be anyone she wasn't, be free... Always appreciate the people you love. A good reminder.

He knows they’re good together, but he can’t be there, properly…..He’s letting her know that he’s not trying to “hold her”. He appreciates what she gives to their “quasi-relationship”, but understands that she might “want more”. Basically, Todd is singing about nearly every traveling musician: “I dig you, but I’ve got to be on my way”…..”If I come back around, maybe we can hook-up again”……

Much of his music wasn't radio-friendly because it had weird lyrics and lots of experimental electronic stuff. I don't know that you'd like all of that stuff, but maybe try Zen Archer.
