from experience what zoe is saying is very true the one thing students and young designers forget about having your own brand is at the end of the day its still a business, from the age of 20-30 those are the years to learn absorb ,research, practice and work for other companies in different position manufacturing process, QC, logistics, warehouse supply, marketing, learn first save up then start when your properly knowledgeable about how to create a company then you can have fun the foundation of a house is just as important as the exterior.

Same here dropped out of Uni at age 21. Spent the next 10 years to learn the craft and everything else. I'm now 34 and I am confident to start a proper fashion business. I have also built brand equity for my business name over the years and now, all I need is a renewed discipline. The last decade was such a tiresome process so I am taking my time, being wiser now.

Grading is highly specialized, technical, and difficult to do well on more complex garments.

You put my mind at ease. I like how you said a designer doesn’t necessarily need to know everything but it’s better to try to learn about it when they can. I think I’ve been stuck going from job to job trying to learn as much as I can and whatever I can bc otherwise, I won’t be able to open my own company. Granted, I don’t have money to spend for all the other vendors I can send them out to but you got me out of my head thinking I have to I HAVE TO know everything. But I will never regret what I have learned. Based on what you listed out, I would say I would have to work on social media and that would have been my next step to learn 😅

Hi Zoe, thanks so much for another insightful video. I learnt a lot from your videos! I do have a question about the grading guide, not doing grading, but grading guide or graded spec. In the industry, who is normally responsible to create graded spec, designer or garment tech? Do designers normally have knowledge about grading guide? Thanks!

The design house is responsible to deciding what is a size 12 or a size 10 for their brand. Who does it depends on the structure of the company. Could be a designer, could be a tech designer.
