Thanks for this!!! Our daughter served on the 3rd Bonhomme Richard 2000-2005, and we cried when it was later destroyed by fire and then dismantled. There’s a statue in Washington, DC, with his famous line, “I have not yet begun to fight!” Definitely sounds like something a Scot would declare with his fist in the air! I will share this with my daughter. Great job!

So cool to see our 2 flags flying together!!! And thank you again for the history lesson! I knew who he was, but I had no idea about his early life. We Americans tend to forget our immigrant roots, especially the early founding father's, as many of them weren't born here! Well done Bob! K.

Amazing idea☺️

Hi Robbie! A murderer? Our good John Paul Jones? Gracious! Gotta stop a mutiny. This was genius! Who knew all of this about our beloved John Paul Jones? Not I! Guess they glossed over that in school. And we use the American pronunciation of the ship. Not the French. So, stick with the Scottish. :) xo

Hi Robert! Always happy to hear your history talks! QUESTION: Back when surnames were becoming the norm, did the surname Porter come from harbor porter families? Last names fascinate me and I always try to find their origins. See you next time!
@scotlandunplugged2 ай бұрын
I think it was more related to gate keeping - port being the old word for a gate into a town. Edinburgh, for example, was entered by six ports in the city walls. 🙂

Love the story of one of John Paul Jones’s ships got damaged so he sail to a Dutch port but his flag got lost somewhere on the see so the Dutch made him a flag and at the time the Dutch hadn’t see the American flag. So when John Paul Jones described the flag the Dutch didn’t get right but I honestly liked the flag that the Dutch made more than the original 13 stars American flag.

Sorry Bob, I'm back! Gotta question, well, settle a disagreement between Graeme and Craigie Boy! I figure you're the Parker Family Historian (that's what I call you!), you'd be able to get to the bottom of it! Graeme says this little 2 sentence phrase occasionally, "slowly, slowly, catchee monkey". Craigie Boy says it's "softly, softly, catchee monkey". Would you clear this up and maybe where's it from, who wrote it, poem or in a play. Inquiring minds, and hoof trimmers, want to know! 🤔😁 Thanks ❤

Is he to be demonized now because he served on a few slave ships? That probably depends on where those "slaves" came from. Anyway, the video's great.
