Why ABA Therapy Doesn't Work

There are times when ABA doesn't work aside from simply not having a good therapist. This is why ABA therapy doesn't work. Abigail had some communication difficulties today and some behavior issues but she worked through it like a champ and got her work done. I'm so proud of my little girl.

FatheringAutism ABA did NOT work for us. Our son is high functioning on the spectrum and has ADHD and OCD as well. He was spending 6-8 hours outside of his school days each week and fought and resented it more as time went by. He was having more and more meltdowns and they were just leaving early each day they were here. They didn’t know how to work with him and we gave up after about 8 mos. I watch your videos and I know you love her so much and that you’re drained and exhausted from this life. Parenting is so hard!

Definitely ANYTHING that your child is involved in, OT, PT, Speech etc the parents HAVE to follow through and be involved every single day. I love what you said about dropping you kid off to fix them. I say that a lot too and run into a lot of people that have that mentality. I think there may be parents that simply cannot deal with situation but I also feel it comes from the barrage of therapists that come in and take over the parental role. Unfortunately some therapists do not even want parents participating in sessions and both therapists and doctors can leave parents feeling like they don’t know or cannot care for their own child because they have this diagnosis. I feel parents should be a bigger part of the picture and given more tools to connect with and guide their children. And I too regret not being better about recording my child’s progress which is why I’m starting now. :) Love your channel. Keep up the awesome stuff.

Our son did pre-school from age 3-5, then ABA therapy full time from ages 5-7 and started full day Kindergarten this past fall and will be in 1st grade next fall. I think he had a lot of gains and progress with some things during our time with ABA, but I feel he also feel behind in some areas while in ABA therapy and not in a school setting. Our ABA center would not work on anything they considered "academic" or "school-like" b/c insurance would not approve it. He learned how to do more daily living skills like dressing himself, drinking from a cup, making basic requests, following basic directions, etc. While at ABA, we were told he couldn't tolerate being around other kids, he ate lunch by himself (with his therapist), played by himself, etc. When we had him re-tested at age 4 we saw him falling farther and farther behind his peers when it came to school related tasks. We started Kindergarten this year and he has made a ton of progress, both academically and socially. He can read basic words and books (new this year), he can add and subtract basic numbers, he can count by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10's. He is not only going to his regular kindergarten class with his peers a few hours a day, but he goes to lunch with his class (sits off to the left of the crowd with his aide) etc. He even held hands with his partner for the very first time this week. (His partner-a little kindergarten girl) has been trying to hold hands all year and every single time he says "not right now" and she never gave up on him. He looked at his aide with hesitance and then grabbed the little girls hand. I was lucky enough to get a picture of it sent to me by his aide. It was the best. I think at this point in time, school is what is right for our son, but no discredit to the ABA process. I think it is great and I think it works. If you find the right fit and everyone is on board, including parents, therapists, and caregivers. Consistancy is the key.

I have autism and went through ABA and I HATED it. But then again, that was at the infamous Judge Rotenberg Center where they shocked me for any undesired behaviors and also took away things from me like contact with my family as punishments. That was very wrong. So i am probably biased against ABA for that reason, but it's my experience. It seems like some ABA isn't as mean so that's good. I am happy for Abagail.

I homeschool my son with autism. He has been getting ABA since 18 months. Currently, he has it 40 hours and week. He is doing amazing. It has taken different forms at different ages. When he started it at 18 months he was nonverbal. He was speaking functionally by 4/5 years of age. Now he communicates verbally very well and reads on a 4th grade level. We are still working on writing skills.

Our son is 12, he had ABA since 2, intensively. He is in mainstream school, passing all his subjects. No significant behavioural issues. He was nonverbal or severely language disordered until about 4/5. Now he generally flies under the radar and his language use, while still somewhat atypical in some settings, is exceptional. For instance I asked him what he is drawing just now and he replied, “the vision that is the cosmos”. His intervention stimulated his neural language paths incredibly. He is a lovely child and gets along very well with his friends and peers.

I've had a tough day physically today mainly due to falling because I blacked out twice while I was standing (it has been happening for over a year and it's happening without any warning now so I can't get low to the ground in time. I have a lot of medical issues so it's just another thing to deal with) and breaking a few ribs (thank goodness I didn't puncture my lungs this time), seeing Abbie's enjoyment on the swing gave me my first smile of the day and considering it's 11pm it's a big thing for me.

I’m guessing she would have “a voice” in her head because she understands language & isn’t deaf, she understands what’s being asked of her, but sometimes it might get scrambled a bit. I just think despite understanding language as Asa has said, her brain is just unable to send the right commands to allow her to verbally express her self or communicate. All that said...I do wonder what her voice in her head sounds like? Maybe like her mum and dad and brother...it’s a nice thought to have :)
@lofi7259
@lofi7259 6 жыл бұрын
I think Abbie currently lacks the verbal processing abilities that would allow her to "talk" inside her head. If she had the ability to form sentences inside her head, her communication would be much different. (For example, she wouldn't need the Dynavox to teach her how to form full sentences, and she probably would be able to sign in phrases or sentences much more easily as well.) Also, many people who are autistic and verbal report that they think in pictures and concepts much more than they think in words. I would bet that Abbie thinks in pictures, sounds, feelings, etc. rather than in words. That's probably one reason why it is taking her so much longer than a typical kid to learn to communicate with words and signs...if her brain is naturally wired to encode information in sensory and emotional ways, then she has to work hard and totally rewire herself in order to encode even the littlest bits of information into a word or a sign.

Again, I have been autistic for 46 years, and diabetic for 43 years. Two challenges to live with are very tough! The best therapy for my autism and\or behavior is biochemical imbalance treatment with nutritional therapy. I have been taking vitamins and supplements for the last 23 years, and I have noticed a remarkable difference. The place I went to for treatmeant was the Carl Pfeiffer Treatment Center. They treat all kinds of behavioral problems with vitamin and supplement therapy. I'm not positive that this would work for Abigail, but it has helped many people improve their behaviors!

As an ABA therapist, I cannot agree with you more. Consistency is key! These kiddos are so incredibly smart and have learned to “manipulate” their environment to gain the things they need/want. There needs to be consistency in order to maintain the increase or decrease of the behaviors targeted. I love just how involved you are!! If only all parents were as involved as you guys, mountains would move!!

We just started our son at a private academy receiving ABA... He just turned 5. So far so good. He's started talking, but it's mostly echolalia and stem noises, most of which he's picked up from baby videos on KZbin. Mostly concentrating on potty training right now. I'll need to see more to form a true opinion of ABA, but at this point we're throwing darts at the board. Public school disnt have the resources, so on to the next step. Love the vlogs, Maass familiy... thank you for giving Abby and all the kids like her a voice

It's VERY good that Resp. Care also follows thru with her ABA and all her planning and education because ive seen people go to Resp. Care and the person's not following thru and they come back and have lost or forgotten all the progress they've made... Idk how long Abbie goes but my individual goes Friday night to Sunday morning and she'd come back and we'd be back to square 1... So we got a new Resp. Caregiver...

Hi Mrs. Maass .. That is not bad. My comment is from the 1980's. "ABA" for me was painful. If it helps Abbie then you are her Mom and I support you. Maybe ABA that I know is not the same today as when I was in it? I once had a ABA person slap me in the head if I rocked then give me treats if I sat still. That went on for hours. I could not tell anyone because I was not talking yet and did not understand much anyway. But I remember it. So now when I see ABA I do not do well. I am sorry if I did offend you because I have watched your videos. You are good parents I do not think that you would put Abbie in a therapy like I was in and I did not mean to make my comment look that way. I am basically typing by myself today with just my roommate to help me and no home health is here so I am probably going to mess up typing comments a lot trying today.

Aaron Raines I’m so sorry that ever happened to you. The field of ABA has become extremely monitored with everything focused on “positive” strategies. Sadly, in the past, there were a lot of people that called themselves “behavior specialists” that were horrible people that had no business being in this field or around children. As a behavior Analyst who loves ABA i am so saddened when i hear stories like this - no child should ever have to go thru that and I work daily to show the world what ABA is SUPPOSED to be

I've heard from other parents or guardians that ABA Therapy is abusive. While I'm not at all criticizing your parental decisions, and I do see the progress Abbie has made, I do wonder if you'd like to comment further on ABA Therapy vs an abusive way of coping with a child's issues? I did see your previous video on the topic, but because it's such a hot topic, would you be willing to do another video about it in the near future, further explaining how it works and why it works? I think there are still a lot of us questioning whether or not people with ASD are mistreated during their "training" (for lack of a better word). Thank you. Your content is awesome and I very much enjoy watching Abbie grow, both physically and mentally

Your "speech" on your ABA agenda really rings true with SO many things from basic child rearing and discipline to things as intensive as ABA therapy. It was the same with our oldest son's OT when he was a toddler. There HAD to be consistency and follow-through with everyone involved, and I think that goes toward confirming your point on brain science. Identical methods won't work for every single person, but the science of HOW to make a method work for each individual is sound.

I know you mentioned before getting her harness for the car she wouldn't always stay in her seat and I was wondering did you ever have a problem or concern with her like trying to jump out the golf cart while it was moving since it doesn't have doors?? Also, after watching today's vlog it really made me angry to know in a past vlog you mentioned insurance denying Abbie because she shows "no desire to communicate" that's such horse crap! She communicates all day long in every single one of these vlogs. It may not be through speech but she surely vocalizes when shes happy or sad or mad. She signs her needs and wants all the time! That IS her communicating!!

Hi, I am an adult with autism (I will not say which level I am on, as I don't want people going at me, but I will say that my verbal and cognitive skills are within the normal limits). I would like to add that even those of us who (like me) have never received ABA have often received the very same message from parents/guardians, teachers, and other adults around whom we should always feel comfortable being our own authentic selves. The message is that we are not allowed to be who we are, but everyone else is. We must always act as though we view the vibes other people give off as completely normal and acceptable, even if deep down, we have that 'gut feeling,' but aren't allowed to trust it, because if we do, we are seen as selfish, overly dramatic, rude, disrespectful, bratty, naughty, defiant, mean, disruptive, etc. The worst part is that we don't even expect DOGS to act in ways that are more tolerable to HUMANS. Yes, we do teach dogs to respond to commands such as, 'sit,' 'stay,' 'leave it,' 'lay down,' 'drop it,' 'quiet,' 'no bite,' etc., and only offer a treat or reward once the dog complies with the given command. However, we don't teach or expect dogs to learn to tolerate being petted, or at the very least, to actually VERBALIZE, "don't pet me."

Thank you guys for sharing. I'm seriously looking further into it. Funding is a huge issue for us here in NZ. Not everyone has insurance to cover it, nor is it funded by the Ministry of Health. We have paid privately for a year of Speech Language Therapy and are trying to privately pay for an OT to help us put together a sensory diet. I know ABA would assist us with our son who has ASD and Partial Blindness. It is so good seeing how it is working for Abbie. Her smile is pure sunshine. I would love to learn more to better understand the ways we can support my son deal with challenges of completely tasks, independence, trying to expand skills and so importantly self regulation. Could you ever do a sit down with an ABA therapist? I remember Asa you mentioned in a vlog, that creating a positive environment to match what your goal is. I could use some/a lot of lil pearls of insight and wisdom from you both as parents. I have seen both discuss how to deal with things at home, when your out and at school... I always appreciate your insights. Blessed to have you in my life! 💜🌈🌟

I was going to ask if ABA and Behavioral were similar. The therapist that trained me as a special needs nanny was behavioral and it worked well with the ST,OT, and PT. I know you guys are so proud of Abbie and Isaiah as well. Congratulations!! I think you should teach Abbie the sign for "play" for when she goes to that park since she loves it so much. It might* alleviate some of the frustration. It's an easy to modify sign and looks like one she's going to wear out this Summer! ♥️ You guys. Sorry I haven't been around. I have 2 days of being a nanny life before I go full time creating!

I'm a new sub but I've been watching your videos the past 3 days and I personally work with adults with developmental and physical disabilities and it's extremely rough... I must give you credit because it's very much due... You guys are amazing!!! Have you ever thought about making Abbie a Sensory/Outburst room?? Like turn her closet into a little sensory room with things she likes that are safe when she's having an episode?? Like I said I'm a new sub so I'm not 100% sure about what's going on with Abbie or what her needs are but just thought I'd mention it... I'm sure you guys know 100000% more then I do but I have seen sensory/ Outburst rooms work WONDERS!!!!

You know what.. I think I have an analogy that may help. I ride horses and usually the second we get on our horse, the first thing we do is assess energy. Some days my horse is super excited, sometimes hes super relaxed and ready to work. Sometimes during the days hes most excited or stimulated, it will take a full hour ride to work out that energy (just cantering around, not even working on certain things) and get him focused. Sometimes I need that myself before I do my homework. I feel you Abbie girl! Sometimes you need a few meltdowns and some ridiculousness to put yourself in the right mindset. Especially if you're going through hormones. I'm 26, but being someone with Dissociative Personality and just being a woman who goes through PMS... it makes things difficult!

We’ve had a good experience, with some ups and downs along the way. Our seven year old was in 35 hours a week one on one ABA until this year. Now she’s in school and it’s down to nine hours of therapy. Our 21 month old started ABA last month and has made some big gains. I really wanted her in because I was hoping we’d maybe avoid some of the super frustrations my older daughter felt at two. I’m hoping we all have more tools to make those early years earlier this time around. And just because I know how much it’s helped and continues to help Maggie.

My daughter is 10 and nonverbal. We started ABA therapy at the end of August. So far she has not started working on functional skills yet and is working on conditioning voices and table pairing. The clinician has also been going to her school one day a week for 1/2 days to take notes and give suggestions to the teacher but now I'm told they want to back off from the school and spend more time at home. I'm not happy with this and I'm wondering what your experience is with ABA involvement at school?

I have a question about the costs of having a child in a school like JSA, but if you guys would prefer not to answer it I understand it. I was wondering about the costs of sending your child to a school like JSA. Is it more expensive than ‘normal’ schools? Can everyone who has a child with severe autism sign up for JSA (or for a similar school), like people with limited income can they have a child in JSA with for example help in payments from the state or with help in payments by social services?

I'm in Australia and was surprised when I joined a fb group for women with autism just how hated aba therapy is here. My only experience with it before then was your vlog so it was a super surprising. Apparently it to do with the history of stim extinguishing in aba therapy.

Thank you for the helpful video! You should check out PRT, which is derived from ABA but really progressive and addresses “pivotal” areas first for faster progress. We live in FL too and just flew with the whole family to the university of California Santa Barbara last week for the multi day program (after being on their wait list for over a year) and it’s helping my daughter a lot. Check into the Koegels work out of UCSB since ABA has worked so well for Abigail.

I guess as her dad I like to show her being successful at what she’s doing so I tend to pick the camera up more in those moments than when she’s having an off day. I should show both more often. I’m proud of her either way so...

ABA is not working with our girl, right now. So many changes in her life. Puberty, med changes, etc. Kiddos like ours have good days and bad days. We just kind of have to ride it out. Hard when they can't talk.

For sure. Body/life changes can certainly bring progress to a crawl. It was an hour and a half before we could get her calm enough to complete her three tasks in this vlog.
