Maria Sharapova is widely regarded as one of the best female sports athletes of all-time, with a decorated tennis career including 36 career singles titles, 5 grand slam victories, and more than 600 match victories since turning pro in 2001. Furthermore, in 11 straight years from 2006, she was the highest paid female athlete in the world, banking in close to $300 million in prize money, appearances, and endorsements.
Because of all of this success, on the 7 March 2016, the tennis world watched in shock as Sharapova had this to say at a press conference in Las Vegas:

And the consequences definitely came. On the 6 June, Independent Tribunal appointed by the ITF concluded that:

“Under article 9.1 the player is automatically disqualified in respect of her results
in the 2016 Australian Open Championship, forfeits 430 WTA ranking points and
prize money of AUS $281,633 obtained in that competitions; Under article 10.2 the period of ineligibility to be imposed is 2 years;”
Just like that, the world’s most influential female athlete was suspended. Support for Sharapova was hard to find, with tennis stars such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Victoria Azarenka all publicly condemning Sharapova’s actions. This lack of support came as no surprise to fellow female tennis star Jelena Dokic, who in a recent article made bold statements including:
“She doesn’t want to be friends with the girls on tour”
“She never spends time in the players’ lounge”
“…it’s no real surprise that some players don’t have a great opinion of Maria.”
So when it came time for Sharapova to make a comeback to tennis following her 2 year ban, many fellow players had mixed emotions upon her return. One of the most vocal was Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard, saying this in an interview about Sharapova:

Bouchard has never been too far away from the limelight either. At just 23 years of age, she has reached as high as world number #5, and spent majority of 2014-2015 inside the top 10. However, it is her off-court life that sees her constantly in the headlines. Known as one of the most attractive players on tour, Bouchard’s popular social media posts such as these ensure her every move is followed closely, including going on a blind twitter date early last year.
Her comments did not go unnoticed; however, with reporters constantly question Sharapova on her thoughts on Bouchard’s stance:

I agree that those who are found to have taken drugs that were never legal should never be allowed to play again. What Maria took was a drug that was legal up until January 2016 when WADA added it to their banned list. It was an oversight rather than an intended attempt to dope and gain an advantage.

As far as I'm concerned, Maria paid the price for her mistake whether it was intentional or unintentional. She was fined and banned from the sport for 2 years. She handled her public shaming and her WTA penalty along with all the controversy that came with it like the true professional athlete she is. I am not sure if Genie knew all the circumstances of the alleged infraction leading up to Sharapova's suspension so for her to call her a "cheat" is rather immature and childish. The substance she had been taking wasn't banned the year before so it wasn't like she was doing something devious or dishonest. Her team should have been up-to-date on the substance ban in the first place so I partially blame them for not keeping Maria clean in the first place. I still have a lot of respect for Maria as a tennis player and a person who loves the game and promotes health and fitness to future generations of young female athletes around the world. Maria is still one of the all time greats in WTA history. Genie could learn a great deal from her. Who knows, she might even win a grand slam one day.

For once I cant believe the ITF took more than a decade to find similar drug pattern among Russian players and maybe there is something wrong going on here. But to say that either she or her team never knew the substance was banned its a lame excuse. Its impossible they wouldnt know. She knew that the substance was now banned but she took the risk because my bet is, she is so used to play with that substance she doesnt believe she can be at the top without it. Her team, including her medical and dietary staff clearly let her down as they should have known the amended rules as well as the consequences for being in violation of those rules. That drug had been banned for a while but she had been using it , how many of her career titles was won under the influence of that drug and other player had to reach deep to keep up with this cheat on court? You could say if she didnt take the drug she would never have won half the titles therefore her sponsors and off court earnings would be meagre, this drug helped her cheat her way too many titles therefore creating lucrative sponsor deals and magazine shoots to boost her profile which again in turn attracts more sponsors=more money, It might also explain the psychological behaviour for not mixing with other players (egotistical) and also the over aggressive grunts she makes on court (hate it, other women player on tour hit just as hard making little noise), all these other behaviour traits are even more pronounced that she has been taking enhancing drugs, boosts your game, boosts your ego. You can understand when all big players condemn her, all fair players struggle in this competitive game and sweat and play hard. End of the day she took a performance enhancing drug and no one else did.

I'm fine with Maria's return to the sport. She paid an heavy price for her actions. Two years is an incredibly long suspension. Players in the NBA, MLB and NFL are tested and caught using PED's and are often suspended for a minimal amount of time. By comparison their suspensions are a virtual slap on the hand. I can't understand Eugenie Bouchard's incredibly hard stand against this infraction; it seems very personal for her. It's kind of like some sick obsession. I was raised to be honest and compete fairly in sports but I was also taught to "walk a mile in the other man's shoes" before passing judgement on others. I don't know enough about the circumstances surrounding the PED's Maria was using, if her physician prescribed them to her or what, so I'm even less inclined to come down against Maria. In my mind she has paid her dues and should be allowed to compete without all of what happened being repeatedly dredged up .

From what I read in some commentaries, it seems that to be able to think about a colleague one has to have the same or greater success (than her/his opponent). Believe it or not, Sharapova is a draw card to the game. Compare the attendance levels when she plays, the sponsorship she enjoys, with that of her adversaries. She may not have won as many titles as others, but she is not taking approved steroids for some lame "medical" condition, and consequently she is somewhat at a disadvantage. Other points to remember is that she does not have tantrums on court nor does she threaten to physically harm officials. In all honestly were you aware that for a great number of years players could take performance enhancing drugs and still be eligible to play?? Athletes taking drugs to gain greater strength, higher endurance levels or increase the pain threshold are cheats but this appears to be ignored by sports administrators because of the implications.

Peter K Let me be more specific. Meldonium is not approved by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for use and sale in the US of A. That means no physician, doctor or any personnel that practices medicine in the US can prescribe meldonium to anyone, and in most cases it is illegal to import in into the US for personal use. When you refer to "Banned since 2016" then you're talking about WADA adding meldonium to the prohibited list of performance-enhancing substances.

I mostly believe that she just didn't realize the drug she's taking is on the prohibition list. She came back and played her first official match in April 2017 (almost a year ago) and till has not made any progress of any sort (except for one international title she won last year). Sharapova's first win at Wimbledon and then the US Open, where Nike launched that HUGE ad for her, the 'I Feel Pretty' campaign, were the two most enjoyable 2 weeks of a major WTA tennis tournament that I've ever experienced. It's funny, because anyone who says anything bad about Sharapova thinks Maria is 'generic' or someone you can just imagine away, and even top 70 ranked players like Bouchard will get into that stuff. Sharapova seems to exemplify and behave the exact way she appears on TV and ads, and I wish I could say that about her in person, but I have never seen her in person. She's 6'2", beautiful, blonde, and super talented, and the competitive understanding goes way beyond tennis because she knows she is on everyone's mind when they see her, even if the person doesn't know her.
