I owed a 2017 F250 diesel FX4 Platinum, used it to pull a 9000 lb airstream. It was such a pleasure to drive. so much power: I could exceed the turnpike speed limit (70) while still on the on-ramp, while pulling that trailer.The Michelins are perfect tires for towing. Super smooth but able to handle the weight. You don't take an F250 offroading, its meant for pulling heavy loads down the highway. The 4x4 is for getting a lot of weight out a soft piece of ground, which I did several times with the trailer. I traded it in on an F450, platinum. Love it too, but that F250 was a nicer ride and better gear ratio for acceleration and top speed. Miss that truck.

I agree with everything you said. I recently rented an F250 Lariat Sport gasser (long story) and loved that truck. It had the same Michelins on the ground but, curiously, the spare had a much more aggressive tread. We got as much as 19 mpg highway, and it had a payload capacity of 3640 pounds. My Galaxy S6 did not play well with the Sync 3 system, however. Once I got used to the height of the running boards from the ground, ingress and egress was not an issue for these old knees. In short, I hated returning it at the end of my 1700 mile trip.

I have a story that's a testament to the current generation of F-250: I was doing support work for Operation Northern Strike 2017 at Camp Grayling in Michigan (military training exercises). Specifically, we were providing security for some of the live-fire ranges. This required us to patrol through a variety of offroad conditions, including rough dirt roads, trails, cross country, hill climbing, rock climbing, fording and driving through 3 feet deep sand tank trails. In order to do this, the Army gave us two brand new 4x4 F250s, a 2016 and a 2017, (because there weren't any available HMMWVs and because they probably wouldn't survive the tank trails anyway. Trust me on this, it was a good choice). Basically, we were getting paid by the government to go Baja racing every day for two weeks (our tax dollars at work 😂). The 2017 was extremely effective at offroading. It was even more capable than the 2016 despite both being the same trim/equipment levels (just different generations). The 2017 never got stuck. We even used it to pull the 2016 out of the exact same terrain. The 2017 just came stock with better tires, better drivetrain, more ground clearance and more horsepower than the 16. Honestly, if I could afford $70k for an offroad truck, I'd seriously consider an F250 over a Raptor. Because you're not only getting a more capable truck, you're also getting a more powerful and more robust one as well. Granted, it sucked gas like nobody's business. But that was really the only downside. TFL- If you want to properly test a truck's offroad potential, give them to a group of soldiers and tell them to have fun. 😂

Turbocharged v8 diesel. Huge towing capacity. Huge payload capacity. 4 wheel drive. Inching towards 1000 ft.lbs of torque. Better fuel economy than the raptor, as well as an engine that can handle the amount of power coming out of it for more than 100,000 miles. MUCH less expensive tires. Yeah fords turbocharged gas v6 ecoboost engines are good ideas, but you can’t really make a whole lot more power out of them. The idea of smaller engine less fuel consumption isn’t really the case here because bigger v8 engines do better then small turbocharged v6 engines when towing (in terms of fuel economy). Gm’s 6.2 Detroit diesel didn’t have exactly the most power, but my stock one on my 1987 Chevy 3500 gets 28mpg going down the road empty. I think trucks get bad fuel economy cause of all the emissions controls and shit the EPA puts on them. Anyways, the super duty is gonna hold its value longer mostly cause of that powerstroke diesel. I see 2006 duramax trucks (4x4) going for 20-25k around here and they’re old tech that holds its value cause of the diesel.

I have a 19 ext cab short box F350 xl stx fx4 service truck. I work on radio transmission sites in southern oregon and northern california. Since the mountains have melted out 2 months ago I have put on 7000 miles of mixed highway/trail use. It is a gas truck but I still love it (and paid less than $40k for it). It gets close to pulling a tire in air (and does from time to time) almost daily, and has a regular diet of pumpkin size rocks. It is a pretty legit off road truck and I really love it (I think I like it more than my personal '15 tacoma). A front bumper, 2" leveling kit and 35-37" tires (maybe an arb for the front) and I would guess this thing could do 75% of the moderate trails out there. FYI the 6.2 gets about 14 highway (with regular mountain pass's that gain 3500+ feet) and about 12 when you mix in the off road sections. I did add a 1/4" steel bed plate to give it a little more rear axle weight (4000lbs front and 3600 lbs rear it was closer to 3100 lbs rear when I got it). My only real "hate it" thing would be the throttle mapping. Your right foot only seems to suggest that the engine actually do something. The engine controls sort of do what they want and that gets pretty annoying when in really steep terrain.

Even though these two are built for 2 completely different purposes probably 95% people buying the Raptor will never use it for it's intended purpose which makes the F-250 a clear winner for it's capability. I would an love an F-250 diesel sport.
@DragonKnightX12
@DragonKnightX12 5 жыл бұрын
Not really when you consider that most people don’t even use half-tons to their full capability, a F-250 would just be a even bigger case of buying too much truck. The Raptor hits a sweet spot for the modern buyers that just want to drive a truck that moves. It’s still got good on-road performance rides and handles good, absorbs crappy American infrastructure like it’s nothing, it’s faster at 5.3-5.2 0-60, decent gas mileage at 15mpg avg with a 36 gallon tank. And it’s capable enough to do what majority do with their trucks. Plus you’ll have the most badass and unique factory truck currently made on the road.

I had to put some money in fixing as the whole heat and AC under the dash, air pump and tension pulley under the hood. New brakes and tires. Shocks in the back. All fluids changed and yet, she flys. Runs like a dream. 100% no engine modifications or exhaust. I would never sale her. Only one very big problem. She is no a small vehicle. Every city, ect is set up for small vehicles. Big parking lots I have to use two spaces. Most fast food drive threw I have to be very careful. Parking that has big parking garages I can not get into. If you tow your race car or more, the f250 6.7 does it like there’s nothing back there bc of the massive amount of torque, wheel base, and weight. The raptor tows like you’re running through sand. So if you aren’t gonna actually off-road with it, you definitely would want to test drive the f250. It drives good not towing but drives great when towing one car.

Glad you mentioned the shortcomings of the those Michelin tires. They look good, but are a big disappointment on winter roads and wet off road conditions. I’ve been aware of that for years, and always budget for a set of winter tires that I have installed by mid November. I feel sorry for those on a tight budget, who by these trucks and SUVs expecting the tires from the factory to perform 12 months out of the year in cold weather climates. Most factory tires are marginal at best. Thanks for the great review.

I love my Raptor. It’s a bad ass Truck. I’ve always owned V8’s, I traded my 2018 F-150 Platinum 5.0 in for my 2018 Raptor. The 5.0 sounded real good, and was pretty quick, but the Raptor is on another level. I wanted a F250 before I bought the F-150, but I don’t tow heavy things. The 1/2 tons were perfect for me, but the resale value of the Raptor made me switch, because my Platinum’s value was dropping fast. Plus I missed having my Roush Mustang. If you think the diesel is impressive from factory, you should drive one that’s deleted. Completely different and better of a truck. The DPF and EGR systems just rob longevity and power from them, and you’ll never be left with a truck that won’t run because of the exhaust system failures.

You had to option up to Blind Spot Monitoring, and it had no adaptive cruise _option_ in the 70k+ Premium trim. You had to option it in Lux trim. It’s more dated than even the 4 runner, or highlander. Tragedy on wheels. I got into it after my LX570 lease was up thinking it was just a downsize. It like like going back in time 20 years.
