My Dad was a touchfree carwash installer / maintenance guy. He would use his F250 van to test the washes. The van had 350k Ohio miles and not a speck of rust. The decals looked really worn and cracked, but the paint looked great. The van was never hand waxed. Alot of science really does go into the detergents and spray wax. It's not the best deal, but if you want to keep your car nice, and value your time at about $20/hr, it is a great deal. Even more so in the middle of the winter.

As a former carwash manager, most of what was involved in the higher end car washes is more protection based and not necessarily extra cleaning. Things like tire dressing, protective coatings that will help water bead and that sort of thing. How long would you like the car to stay more protected. Super cool episode to see all the chemical balances brought to light!

My tunnel was a giant chemistry experiment. I had really hard water, and Stone Soap in Sylvan Lake, MI set me up with a shampoo and drying agent that complimented one another. It made a pretty big difference, but was very expensive. I had a tiny 50ft tunnel, so I only had one foam wax arch, and that was one of their tri foam "conditioners". I chose the green. They had two varies of tri foams. One that contributed to the cleaning, and another that had actual carnauba wax. I chose the line that cleaned more because my location was where a lot of muddy cars went to. My former emoyer in the industry also had a simar philosophy.

@@07wrxtr1 - I love CarPro Cquk 3.0. I've also used their Lite, which is like UK Jr, and even that coating is super durable, especially for a six month + durability raring. That being said, Optimum Gloss Coat is in my #1 spot. Reason # 1 - It reduced the tunnel wash damage for one of my clients. Reason # 2 - It's a lot easier to work with. Reason # 3 - All of my other maintenance products are by Optimum. Their No Rinse car wash, their Opti-Clean waterless wash, and their Instant Detailer and Gloss Enhancer. I can also use their Car Wax, Opti-Seal, and Hyper Seal with it to no ill effect. Reason # 4 - No wasted suede applicators, or microfiber towels. Reason # 5 - No harsh fumes. No need to wear a mask or respirator. Please note that in spite of those attributes to Optimun Gloss Coat, I do keep Carpro Lite, Gliss, Skin, and UK 3.0 on hand. Excellent coatings for sure. Awesome explanation. You got it pretty well figured out! We have different packages, and each package contains very different services. We use high pH presoak, high pH foam, three different wax options, a low pH foam, two wheel cleaner options, and three drying agents/ polymer seal options. All of our chemical products are tested extensively for performance and safety. I can't speak for every carwash, of course but here's a good tip- If the carwash is clean, it means the operator cares. Great episode dude. Thanks for breaking it down so people understand what’s going on at the wash. As a car wash owner I will say you got one thing wrong. The tri foam is designed to do the things you said but it also acts as a lubricating agent to help the blowers dry the car thoroughly. It’s an important piece to providing a clean car along with spot free water which has no minerals in it for the final rinse.

This isn't a recommendation but for twenty years I worked in a lab. When you see pictures of laboratory technicians working with fancy glassware remember all that stuff needs cleaning. One place I worked at had dump trucks - a lab and dump trucks, an interesting combination. One day a driver came by the lab asking if I had any detergent. He wanted to wash his truck. I gave him Alconox, the detergent we used to wash glassware. He raved about it, said the paint shone like new. The word spread and soon I was having to order more Alconox. I never tried it on my own car, but yeah, what detergent you use can make a big difference.
@CRneu2 жыл бұрын
alconox is somewhat bad for the environment, in that it shouldn't be discharged into the water. so preferably don't use it for everyday tasks. It contains phosphates which cause issues. So if anyone sees this and thinks, "Oh i'll order alconox to clean my car." please dont. Just....like please dont. Anything you use with alconox needs to be treated/neutralized before discharging into the drain.

I owned a carwash and we do use different chemicals and run the machines at different speeds or numbers of passes for the more expensive washes. However the cleaning is done through contact. Sure the pre sprays and chemicals loosen things up but you cant really get that clean without having adequate and even contact. Many of these machines have laser, touch and strain sensors to know when they are putting too much pressure on the vehicles and back off to avoid scratches. Two most important things in an automatic car wash is how clean the rinse water is and how good the lubricant that gets sprayed onto the brushes are. All the other stuff doesn't really alter the wash in any noticeable way. The only time I had a long program outperform a basic 4 cycle was with multiple rinse cycles between chemicals and thats a huge waste of water.

The wash at my location was a 100% reclaim system meaning we did not have a sewer system to discharge into. Due to this our BioReactors could not digest the red dye so the three waxes were applied, blue, yellow and white. Also, car washes are just a basic maintenance wash which is very good at keeping the dirt granules off the surface. To remove all dirt you manually have to remove it and don’t pay for wax every time as it just seals in the dirt. Look at your windshield and this will be apparent.

@@fitybux4664 If you do it correctly hand washing it probably conserves more water, if you do it at a car wash water is being sprayed everywhere but at home you can be precise which saves water.

The car wash I worked at we would water down all the soaps if it got too busy, We'd also speed up the track speed by 10-70%. What I'm getting at, if you go to a bustling car wash, go in the morning before they can dilute the chemicals and while the wraps are still (hopefully) clean from the night crew

If you go to a carwash ask the owner about the products. I work at one where we have a pre-wash where we clean the car before you go in and we have products that are chosen because of their quality. It really depends per car wash how well it does its job.

So I actually used to work at a car wash and the price of the chemicals from a top tier wash at most popular is about $.50-2.00 so car washes usually make about 2000% profit.
