Why chameleons change colors - Chroma Edition

Here is a beginner look at why chameleons change color. This video shows off various color changes from one chameleon, Chroma. There's a little science, and a lot of feels! It is difficult to get a chameleon to stay still long enough to see some drastic color changes, and as an added difficulty, for those dramatic changes you need to really irritate the chameleon. I don't stress him out like that, so the best I'll get is vivid change. He will be dark and gloopy when he is cold or chillin, and then he will get really bright when he is excited or angry. I don't get the angry, but you can see when I give him scritches, he gets excited and really starts to pop!
There is a LOT of misinformation out there, notable on big KZbin channels about WHY a chameleon changes color. There's even some photoshopped clickbait videos that are really popular. I'll do a Q&A after yall comment some questions, but stay weary of the information out there on those other channels.

Hey humans! I get asked this question a LOT, and I noticed most (if not all) of the other videos I see about this on KZbin are fake and or false. Here, I throw a couple science facts at you, but really explain WHY the chameleons change, HOW they change, and WHAT they change. Got some awesome closeups of Chroma to really show off the small cells he has around his body. Enjoy! And as usual, any questions lemme know :) As a side note, auto focus on the camera HATES chameleons due to all the color and texture differences. So you can see the auto focus geeking out a lot when I film this guy. I usually do manual focus, but when I can't use TWO hands for the camera, I have to auto focus it. Sorry about that

I was never interested in them either, and then my buddy basically gave me the red one because he couldn't take care of it anymore. Since then I've had 3 total and they are the cutest, dumbest animals lol. It's a LOT of time and upkeep, but totally worth it. Definitely the least beginner friendly animal though I think.

If I remember college biology correctly, chameleons can see monocular, stereo, almost 360 degrees and ... TWO different sections of the spectrum at once - one in each eye. Your buddy must be pretty good at recognizing you! :) Imagine seeing infrared in one eye and visible light with the other whenever you feel like it!

I have a cat with mutant paws and with like 3-4 extra toes on each front paw and they form an L shape when he sits. I call them his chameleon paws. He can even squeeze with them to grab things lol. It's freaky when he reaches out and grabs your finger with them. I love it.

Chroma is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I am a bird person, so no matter how much I have wanted one of these over many years, I have not purchased one. When you have birds, you have to be careful about diseases that reptiles can give your birds.

I know this is just coincidence, but in Warframe there's a frame named Chroma. on a different subject I use to have some pet chameleons. I had a few different ones in my early teenage years. I had a few veiled chameleons some jeweled ones a few Jackson chameleons.

Ah I've heard about that one. My subs actually named Chroma, although I did use Chroma as one of the options for them to pick because of Chromatophores, which are the skin cells chameleons use to get their colors :)

I have heard this many times, that chameleons don't change colors to hide... But I once saw one small chameleon in Portugal that changed from bright green (while in grass) to red (while crossing a clay floor) to brown with patterns (while climbing a tree, the patterns where very close to those of the tree bark)... So how is that not shifting colors to blend in? 😅 Maybe some species don't do it, maybe some species only do it as babies... But I bet this info is somehow not completely correct.

What type of chameleon is the best to first get

Honestly any of them, they all require the same thing. Veiled are less maintenance and a little more hardy, so I would say they are the "starter" chameleon. But honestly you can get a Panther first if you want to have a higher chance of them being sociable, and prettier :) Just don't get one from a pet store, go through a breeder 100%

They do survive in the wild, they are not color blind that I know of. In the wild, it's less about color and more about pattern that keeps em safe. For example, he's bright blue and red, but in my enclosure sometimes he can be sitting right in front of my face and I can't find him lol
