Tom Hiddleston’s ad for Centrum multivitamins is a hit in China, but Western viewers online found the ad "creepy" and "uncomfortable." But what made the video so appealing to Chinese viewers? We hit the streets of Shanghai to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Shanghai.

TBH the Ad was fine, as is... It draws you in with someone who apparently is well known in China so people pay attention. The only part in Chinese he says is to take your vitamins which also stands out. If they had done a ad just about vitamins- nobody would remember anything about it or talk about like they are doing now.

Yes. I’m an American so I don’t know that it’s relevant either way, but I just finished posting my opinion up there & decided to copy & paste it here so you don’t have to search for it - I know, I’m such a sweetheart like that! 😇 Kidding. *{OK...this is hilarious to me...I had no clue who the heck this Tom Hiddleston is, so I paused to go google his name. 😂 And yesss, I found the ad (more specifically, his portrayal of his part) SUPER CREEPY & way too {male feminist, schmoozy,” in the attempt to manipulate the love interest into believing he’s one way - then turns out to be a sociopath who kills her - or would be the ultimate stalker if she left him. Literally, that’s what I got from it. 😬🤓}* Literally, that’s what I got from it. 😬🤓 ~~~Oh-and for the young women who think American men are self centered...they very well may be, but I have a self-absorbed father, & didn’t date that kind...my husband of 16 years (also an American) TOTALLY DOES make cool for me & spoils me, he just isn’t a creepy weasel about it, so I don’t have to worry that I’ll end up in a freezer & the subject of a cautionary tale video on some crime show! ♥️

I think some people think of it as weird for two main reasons. 1. Western people aren’t used to POV stuff. I’m not sure how common it is in China, but I’ve definitely seen a lot of POV stuff in Kpop and there are some cultural similarities. 2. The people who don’t like it may not have a crush or anything on Tom Hiddleston. Maybe they’d react better if it was someone they liked instead.

Even he has a Homophonic Chinese name "dousen"(抖森)that fans gave to him. Go and ask any girls in college , i bet at least 80% know him. And many of them are crazy about him. Explain :Marvel movies already have fanbase globally. Also,His accent ,education background and other British TV series may fit the stereotype British gentlemen. I know him look average now but in the 20s he had lots of works. They didn’t pick a random white guy to worship ,plz at least get to know one of his huge amount of movies or stage dramas.

He came to my house to see me, and I was in the basement cleaning my room, and I looked a mess, no makeup and scarf on my head. He told me I was naturally beautiful and he came to ask me out. I thought to myself...he thinks I look good, this is the man for me. We had a date for the movies...he called me and said he couldn't go. His mother didn't want him dating anyone who wasn't Chinese. Franz Peters regardless, the point is that _this_ guy did those things and that it is an attractive trait that many women probably associate with western dudes. But you are correct, there are Chinese men like that. But what they said about Westerners being more about passion vs money compared to the Chinese ideal being more about career and money first are actually informed by culture. It is doesn’t mean _all_ are like that from either group, but these are the ideas that are true about the majority/culture.

Should I bring up my traditional clothing questions again as another topic for you Asian Boss people to ask? I'd really like to see what people from Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, China, and India think of their traditional clothes. Do they like wearing them? Do they see people wearing them often? What do they think when they see foreigners wearing them? What do they think of cultural appropriation, a commonly talked about topic in the west? Thanks!

oohh this is a good one. No one gives a damn about cultural appropriation where I'm from (thankfully!) we all wear eachother's traditional clothes and take part in cultural festivities together. It's great, it's actually encouraged. White dudes have dredlocks, black girls wear indian outfits, chinese take part in traditional african dances. I feel like America likes to claim it's a melting pot... but, it isn't true, sadly.

For what it's worth, I'm white, American, and know only a handful of words in Mandarin (like hello and stuff), but I didn't take offense to anything said (like the self-centered remark that was mistranslated) nor did I think less of anyone saying it. I've read some of the other comments and know where some of the egregious errors in translation are, but I typically take translations with a grain of salt as not everything is fully translatable from one language to another.

Western guys talk the talk but their actions don’t match their words). I can go on and on from my personal experience and from the experience of those around me, but bottom line: I used to see western guys under a beautifying filter, but I know better now, that’s why I only date Chinese men.

As a Tom Hiddleston fan, I found the ad very sweet, but not creepy. If anything, it's unrealistic and really sappy. He apparently cooks a heart-shaped egg for crying out loud. Lol Some people say it's the way the ad was filmed in first-person, so that makes it seem weird. Or the way he delivered his lines wasn't convincing or his greasy long hair doesn't make him look his best. Either way, I don't think it's a big of a deal. There are pros and cons to both cultures. I thought the bit about men who’d just continue a marriage out of responsibility and to avoid judgments of society is not healthy. It is also not healthy to marry someone without really knowing yourself and your partner-if you aren’t compatible things likely will not go well in the end, so spouse selection should be a lot more careful. And marriages really ought to be of really great friends who happen to also be lovers. This is a middle ground between the two cultural paradigms: do put your spouse first, but be very selective and self-aware and observant whilst choosing a partner and _honest_ and _open_ about those things, otherwise you may run into something toxic. Putting two people together that aren’t good for each other is never a good thing and sticking it out for kids is not a setting a good example for said kids of how to select a partner or be in a loving relationship.

I can see why people might find it creepy. Because the person Tom is speaking to (supposedly you lol) isn't responding at all for the most part. No one cares about educating themselves and gaining insight, learning nuance and critical thinking. They've all fallen out of favour for shallow group think and collectivist thought. That's why there's such a huge political and cultural divide in the West now; but at least according to Jubilee's Middle Ground series, it shows there are a growing number of people being exposed to insightful and respectful discourse.

I need to say something that might surprise most people: i‘m an Asian woman living in Europe. My boyfriend is a Muslim from Syria. When i am sick, he treats me like Tom Hiddleston in the video. He can’t cook, but he goes out and buys food for me and he does the household for me (he does the dishes, cleans my flat). And he hugs me a lot. My Asian parents didn’t hug me a lot as a child, i think Asians are very reserved. People from the Middle East tend to be very touchy and passionate. It feels good for me to be showered with such physical warmth and closeness. No special occasion for a hug, i just get hugs for nothing. He‘s a good and respectful man.

This can come across as more personal/direct, plus it's a stranger pretending to be your SO - some people find this kind of cringy/uncomfortable. On the other hand if you like this sort of thing its very endearing, and allows you to imagine a fantasy world where he is your SO.

It's creepy because it's missing something essential for every couple: a shared warmth, goodbye kiss ... I have the impression that his greatest wish is her good nutrition, and he will come back soon to check if she was eating properly. The ad itself is on point.

It's creepy because it gives of a feeling that he doesn't live with her. At the beginning he said he came back from somewhere. Okay so far. But than at the end he said they won't see each other for a week. If she was his wife, or a girlfriend that he lives with, saying something like that as he heads out sounds unnatural for a couple. Wouldn't her mention that earlier in a conversation. He sounds like a stalker that comes and goes as he pleases and there is nothing she can do. She should just be ready for him.

Love how all the women speak so intelligently and refined. Can’t imagine the same if it was British women interviewed.
