No, but some parts don't react well to a lot of Dry Fire!! It doesn't hurt to use snap caps

I was a Glock armorer for about 15 years with the police department I worked for. I saw loads of damage to the Glock 22s and 23s that we were issued due to dry firing without using snap caps. I protested to my Captain but nothing was ever done. I had to replace entire pistols a few times after the strikers peened the firing pin safeties and then cracked the back of the breach face. I could never convince some of our officers that they had to protect their pistols by using snap caps and limiting their dry firing of the pistols. Our guys had bought into the propaganda that the Glock was invincible and perfect. One of our Lts.even bragged about cleaning his pistol by putting it in his family dishwasher at home. Not until the pistols wore out after only about 3-5,000 rounds did the majority of them come around. The frames stretched out due to the .40 caliber cartridges pressure and the pistols had a very short service life compared to 9mm pistols.

So I was at my range at home, just finished building a G43x. I intend to have it as my daily carry. The firing pin broke on round 67. Yes I had dry fired the gun previously to test function but the firing pin broke with a live round in the chamber. Not good! I think I’ll be contacting ArmOrAlly on Monday morning! Glad it happened before I began conceal carrying it and needed the gun to work flawlessly to save my life.

I had my ruger ec9s striker tip break off from excessive dry fire with snap caps. I did not even realize it till i took it to the range and it did not work. Luckily ruger sent me a new striker but even with snap caps im weary of dry firing after that. Atleast with my carry gun. With my taurus 605 i have dry fired thousands of times with snap caps and never had any issues.

I’ve had my gen 4 Glock 26 break two strikers over 8 years, the first one after four years, the second one after two years. Very minimal dry fire, and just a modest amount of live rounds down range for the life of the gun. I’ve also got an HK VP9 full size and SK, I’ve searched and have not found a case of the VP9 striker break, but a quick search for Glocks shows page after page of strikers breaking in the same place. I am a sample size of one, but I gotta say just my own experience and seeing so many others have breakage of the same type, I’ve lost my faith in Glock Perfection a bit. I’ve got a whole striker assembly on the way to replace, but I may retire it, I just don’t have confidence in the gun and I hate that.

So I have a P80 G22 built with both OE Glock & aftermarket components. Broke my SECOND striker today... during a dry-fire... As much as I'd hate to admit it, both strikers broke during dry-firing (& honestly didn't feel like an "excessive" amount either), but they were also MIM pieces & I don't believe they were OE Glock. Still, something to be said about that. So now I'll *only be dry-firing with the snap caps, & I'm "upgrading" to genuine Glock parts & billet components, MIM is trash.

I’ve found that striker fired pistols don’t like dry practice without snap caps. I do a whole lot of dry practice, I use snap caps every time.

Good question. IMHO, you should be careful when purchasing strikers, some are REALLY good, some not so much. Don't fall for Marketing Talk. Do yourself a favor and read reviews from users!! I got an after market Striker once that was TOTAL Garbage. Went back to OEM Glock Striker.
