That’s actually how they almost caught Ramirez. I was friends with someone who joined the serial killer "fandom". As I look back on it, I think she only signed up for 3 reasons: 1) she thought thought the killers were attractive 2) she was depressed 3) she didn't get attention from attractive boys in real life and murder fell into the "any attention is good attention". I wish I had said more at the time as she was obviously going through some stuff, but she was *too* deep into it by the time I found out when I was 13.

Some people with depression would fall into the rabbit hole of serial killers because the op just gave the reasons in their comment: no romantic attention from people, and bad attention at least equals attention. This isn't to say that their ex-friend isn't crazy though for crushing on serial killers. Just everyone goes through different experiences when having depression.

I have a lot of problems with the current state of true crime, even outside these strange murderer stans... I agree wholeheartedly! I LOVE mystery stories and games since I was kid with magic tree house and Nancy Drew, but I could never get into “true crime”. I tried watching one documentary and it just creeped me out like- these are REAL PEOPLE! And they are just casually describing them being brutally murdered like they were reading a story and not a real life tragedy. I was horrified by how many people were casually theorizing about that one vloggers death a few months ago like it was a fun piece of entertainment and not someone who died less than a week ago… I feel for these people’s families…

@@kingexplosionmurderfuckoff9376 I replied to ur comment in another post, dude u keep defending these serial killers in the pretense of supporting and remembering the victims as if that is even done anyways right now, most people know f*** ALL about the victims.... I mean ffs u are here watching a video primarily about these killers not their victims that should show u enough about who is really being remembered, and to make it worse its one about them being glorified sex symbols while the victims are rarely mentioned other than to extend these killers stories, all the attention goes to one person and u are here with chest, pretending like it doesnt its really upsetting. And what are u on about being forgotten, if I got raped, cut into pieces, eaten and etc I would rather the person who did that shit to me not get the satisfaction of ever being given coverage cause that's what they want, to get attention from my pain and torture, and you lot give them that shit while pretending to uphold the victims, it's sucks, stop pretending to care about the victims when u clearly don't. Besides, no one wants to be remembered like that, as a part of a story of some sick f***, a piece of his puzzle, we would all want to be remembered for the person we were before this bullshit, and by the people that actually loved and cared about us, the ones who will genuinely carry the memories of our TRUE self forever, not some randoms on the internet who ocassionally use our pain as a bed time story when they are having insomnia, or as a topic of discussion about gruesome events over lunch with their buddies, or by people who use our pain as a base of entertainment for greedy companies to make money and capitalist consumers to be entertained when there is nothing else to watch on Netflix, and at the end, they pour out some brittle sympathy for us and move on with their lives. If that's what remembering is, forget me! I will be remembered by the ones who mattered the most anyway. Especially since most people/shows/etc's "remembering" highlights the criminal more than all the people who he/she caused so much pain? Smh F that, FORGET ME! And again as I said in the other post, erasure of murders doesn't mean erasure of victims, u can go WITHOUT GIVING attention to killers and still keep the victims alive.

From my brief forays into true crime, I have come to the understanding that fame creates imitators. Serial killers who become famous creates waves that lead to people doing all kinds of stuff. One of the few youtube videos I watched was about a kid who wanted to go out like the guys from columbine so he shot up the supermarket he worked at then killed himself. He did all sorts of things, like video documenting his plans and such. And it was shocking that he went so long without anyone picking up on it, he had a KZbin channel where he did an animated series about dead teenagers doing stuff, and another that he stopped posting on after he killed off his characters brutally. And he was on a columbine fan group, which was the final kicker. If his parents weren't doing anything, the surely somewhere in the government a department must have flagged him up as a threat, if not to others lives, then his own. Or at least closed down the fangroup. It shocks me, seeing as he goy most of his ideas from the fan group, that the government isn't doing more to shut these kinds of things down.

Hybristophilia (attraction to criminals) is one of the most terrifying things to see and how delusional it makes people. The fact it's often tied to the "I can change him" fantasy makes my skin crawl because there's a separate set of issues involved with that. It also ignores the mask off reality that many serial killers aren't misunderstood with grandiose plans and are in fact very petty, short-sighted, and vile to the core with nothing redeeming about them or any sympathetic motivation.

I I love this video and your content and I think this topic is so important to talk about, but I do have one thing to add! Ted Bundy was played by Zac Efron in the Netflix movie Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile because he would use his charm to trick his victims and the story was also kind of being told from Liz’s perspective which is why he’s portrayed by Zac Efron because he’s so publicly loved, but also because he used that to his advantage to kill and not get caught. He wasn’t portrayed by Zac Efron to romanticize him or make him look like a better person, he was played by Zac Efron because he so beloved, was very charming and charismatic, and very cute and that’s kind of how Ted Bundy was and why he had so many fans. also can we talk about the fact that ted bundy isn’t even cute ???? idk what was wrong with his fans😭

YES THANK YOU. That movie gets a lot of unnecessary flack. It's made from Liz's point of view because it's BASED ON HER BOOK she and her daughter were on set giving thier input, Lily Collins talked to her about how she felt about how she was portraying her, what she thought she should do or change, etc Zac Efron took a 99% pay cut to make sure the movie got all the money it did to being made The guy who made it isn't only also behind the Bundy Tapes Documentary, BUT he also made the documentaries that led to the West Memphis 3 having their case be made national and eventually released. This director walks the walk Infact he said he casted Zac Efron because as OP said he had his charm. Because to a whole generation he has a face that sets people at ease cause they think Disney, he has a trustworthy face, much like how Bundy did at the time. It was to highlight how these killers can manipulate you into trusting them

What sucks is that shows like You in particular are made to shine a light on the ridiculousness of this stan behaviour and how men being attractive causes a major halo effect. I seem to recall the same sort of point being made about casting Zac as Ted Bundy, like it was very intentional. A discussion can definitely be had here as to whether showing something means you're endorsing it. I personally don't think that a show focusing on a terrible person is inherently sympathetic to them, but it's also naive of writers and show runners to think that people will be able to critically consume media. (some media can glorify however, and the distinction is important to understand).

I mean, I came back from Bundy's biopic with Efron to actually horrify me. You sympathize with him for a bit, but in the end, I never got the idea from it of "Bundy so sexy, I stan". But that might be my own bias as someone who came into the movie hating Bundy, so idk if someone else who was into Bundy in that way would get the same message.

Y'all aware that the film is based on the biography of Bundy's ex gf Lisa? so that's why he seems quite romanticize in half of it because the story is in Lisa's perspective. and I am honestly not bothered about Zac being casted, as apparently Bundy is considered attractive by some people in his time, especially I even remember that interview of one of his almost victim, although she was quite traumatized by the incident she still described Bundy as charming and "very attractive" and that shît says a lot.

There is something to be said about finding an interest in these people because they are fascinating on a psychological level. But interesting doesn't mean good. It just means there's a point where we want to investigate what makes them tick. The people who glamorize serial killers are not interested in them. They're interested in playing out a fantasy of their own, which is often from a place of delusion. On one hand, they're like the fat, oiled pigs laying themselves out on a platter with an apple already in their mouths. They make themselves the perfect target for most of the killers. Or, they're the kind that would 100% fall into a cult mentality, which is how you have people like Manson running around with people following him. There's a line between finding someone interesting enough to research them and glamorizing someone, and that line is _not_ a fine one.
