Why would a feminist want to talk about men? Because although feminism has changed the world, men still hold most of the power in the economy, in government, in religions, in the media and often in the family. While increasing numbers of men are questioning traditional views about what it means to be a man, feminist Nikki van der Gaag asks if there is a place for men in the feminist story and illustrates how men can become part of the solution.
Nikki has been working on women’s rights and gender in many countries in the world for the past 20 years. Since 2006 she has been the main author of most of Plan International’s State of the World’s Girls reports. She became increasingly interested in why so many programs only worked with girls rather than men, when the boys in the countries she visited for her research were often jumping up and down asking: why not me? Nikki was already aware of organisations like Sonke Gender Justice and Instituto Promundo and she wanted to write an engaging book that examined the issues around feminism and men and asked some key questions about why, when women and girls have changed so much, men and boys have not.
In 2014, Nikki wrote Feminism and men and has been speaking about the book's ideas at many event all over the world. She has also been working with both Sonke and Promundo to co-author State of the World’s Fathers (an idea she had in the swimming pool!) which they launched in 7 countries.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I started traveling the world visiting men and boys while talking to women about how they can be part of the solution instead of the problem! All they have to do is devote all their life to men's problems while neglecting their own because as we all know they dont have problems they have the opposite of problems so it shouldn't be a big deal they're just naturally bad people

She literally said it...: "Men won't change unless they see they'll also benefit" Well, so I'm still waiting to see some of those benefits she *definitely* had in mind. Men won't fight for feminists when you see how hostile feminists are towards men... men will find women who appreciate men for what they are... and both of them will be happy and won't care anymore.

@mrcrabowski
@mrcrabowski Жыл бұрын
@@tee50252 "feminists are only hostile towards close minded men" That's true... the problem is what's mine, yours and theirs definition of close/open-minded person... According to me, you're open-minded IF you're willing and able to start the conversation and/or start listening to their opinions with a clear mind and keep your posture even when they start with absolute dogsh*t stuff... whether you proceed to agree or disagree with them has little-to-nothing to do with being open/close-minded, that just your own preference or opinion According to them, you either agree with them and support them at all times = you're "open-minded and good" or you're against them and thus, you're "close-minded toxic, sexist man" etc. Sure, not all feminists are like that but A LOT of modern, especially western, feminists at least partially follow that logic... and the funny thing is that modern feminists are toxic not only to men, but also other women who happened to disagree with them so... The problem is definitely not on my side unless you agree with their logic... Edit: I'm for TRUE equality = equality of opportunity, NOT equality of outcome... unfortunately, that's not enough for feminists, they want both at the same time as long as they benefit from them (if there would be situation where men could benefit from that, then there's a need for exception) and that's not possible unless you make rules that will give women game-breaking advantages and benefits = NOT equality and IF we gonna go the "TRUE equality" route... feminists would lose their mind... they don't want equality... they wanna keep all the benefits and advantages they have from old days and then also get all the benefits and advantages of a modern day... that's not how it works... AND another problem is that feminists don't wanna work on 150 % and truly push themselves up to "become equal", no, that's too much work, they rather gonna complain and whine until rules that drag men down are put in place so they can start complaining about next thing... again, that's not how it gonna work...

@@mrcrabowski i agree with your description of open-close minded people. However, the “toxic feminists” aren’t toxic BECAUSE they’re feminists, that’s their character and they happen to also be feminists. i really hope you understand that we’re not hostile towards every men and i personally fight for men AND women. But when men don’t listen to us and do not want to understand our side, that’s when hostility is necessary.
@mrcrabowski
@mrcrabowski Жыл бұрын
@@tee50252 I understand that not all feminists are toxic but a lot of toxic women (and toxic, bitter men) become feminists = a lot of modern feminists are toxic = whole group is perceived as toxic because, as it usually works, the most vocal group, whether they want it or not, defines the rest of the group for observers. "But when men don’t listen to us and do not want to understand our side, that’s when hostility is necessary." I disagree with that... they probably don't listen to you or want to understand you for some reason... maybe they're insecure, maybe they feel they needed to "fight for the meat" and they expect others to do the same, maybe they were hurt by woman/en and are in defensive position already, maybe they look at "equality" from different perspective and what you say don't make any sense to them and many more examples... and by becoming toxic to "push them where you want them to be" or "to convince/coerce them", you just make it even worse and less and less normal, smart people will join your side while more and more toxic people start joining your side = it will eventually snowball into absolute sh*tfest and nobody will take feminism seriously anymore = people who are mocking even traditional feminism starts to be the "cool guys" in their ranks = overall bad Idk about you but I'd just move on, skip all those who don't care and/or are not willing to listen, try to stay positive and "target" those who you can talk to openly and express what you *would ideally want* - that's another point, if you proceed to say something along the lines "I demand", "I expect", "I need", then that's automatically a minus point, if you'd say something like "I'd like", "I'd wish", "we could try", then it sound much less threatening to an average man and there's significantly smaller chance of him not falling into his defensive position where he won't give you much space to express what you want... and sure, he may still disagree with you but at least they gave you an honest chance. In my opinion, it should be as natural progression as possible, not pushing something by force, it basically never works...

That anecdote at the beginning says it all. Her son asks 'what about me' i.e. what about the rights of boys and men and it 'starts her thinking about men's role in feminism' i.e. what boys and men can do for women. How bigoted can you get, to deliberately misconstrue what you're own son is saying? It's not difficult to imagine why a 10 year-old would say that. This woman is obviously much more concerned about her daughter than her son and he is picking up on it. She ought to be ashamed of herself. What a terrible mother.

Give a 5 year old a stack of money and then see if he's willing to take care of you when you're seriously ill or hurt. The gender role of a man is what she used as an example. Many kids and people in general would fight for and take care of a mother who is there for them but and same thing would go for a father if that father did what she did. As it turns out most fathers don't typically have that role there for are not there for there kids other than providing money. The term for a mother's job is nurturer. The current a term for a fathers job is often called "Child Support".

Why is it always the most privileged people who constantly act like they're engaging in some just struggle against oppression? This woman is white, clearly upper-middle class, clearly well-educated, and more than likely is loaded. I see it at university too; the members of feminist societies at red-brick unis like Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Edinburgh etc, where more privately-educated kids go, are way more radical and have much more of a victim complex than at former polytechnics where more working-class people attend.

You'll see it at protests and marches too, you'll have the absolute nutjobs and you'll have these rich kids and middle class people who are the most offended of all. My own theory (for middle upper class) is that their lives are so mundane and vapid, that they need a cause (almost a sense of purpose or something to live for), this is either done consciously or subconsciously but they develop almost a cult like attitude towards it whether its environmentalism, social justice, anti nuclear campaigning, socialism. If it makes them feel like they're "changing the world" that's their cause. Really their blind views usually snowball into the extremes over time and they literally become extremists over the years in whatever "Cause" they've dedicated their lives too. Students are abit different, usually it's the same vein of "changing the world" but not the same entry into it, the entry into extreme belief for students is ignorance, they simply don't know any better and if it sounds good they'll go with it (usually the majority grow out of it with experience/time and the extremist view is kept to a fringe minority) That's just my take.

0:18 Not really. I find it strange when feminists do NOT talk about men. I find it strange and a pleasant change. Mostly it's "Men are rapists. Men are pigs. Men have fart privilege." and a ton of other insane feminist misandrist BS. Please tell me you're going to either NOT talk about men or at least not demonize them for your entire speech. 0:55 Not trying to read your sons mind but do you think he might have been asking "What about ME?" as in "Why not pay attention to me and get me a candy bar or a new toy truck?" or possibly "What about MY rights when I grow up?" and NOT "How can I help your ideology? Can I obsess about women's rights too?". I don't know. Shot in the dark. 1:18 Got exact stats on both how many women face violence from their partner and how many men face violence from their partner and if you want to do the 'usually a man' bit, a break down of the sexes of all partners on both sides of the violence? Do you have that? And then you complain about lack of 'political representation' b/c, for some reason, a government just isn't good enough until women are forced to be in politics. Fuck their choices. Fuck the fact that most of the feminist women who make this 'point' (I'm betting you included) aren't running for office. Fuck all that. It's just not equality until the government is 50/50 and if women, with their quotas in place, then rise above that percent? Well, that's just MERITOCRACY! We can't argue with that, right? And when the government is COMPLETELY female (oh, and naturally, only feminist females who share your politics. Everyone else has internalized misogyny and are practically just men), what will your excuse be then? 1:32 Oh, Jesus Christ. You're a parrot. You're a living feminist tape recorder. Pay gap? Please. 1:50 Oh Christ. Here we go. You picked the 3rd option for what your son meant. Personally, I think he wanted a new toy. Maybe a hug. Maybe for mommy to care more about HIM and less about her insane fantasies of 1st world oppression of women. But no, you think he wants to be your little feminist soldier. Sigh... Pakistan. South Africa where they need free clinics. Yeah, NOT the first world. 3:45 Pretty sure that when you say 'involve' you mean 'use'. 4:05 So you open up with "Male feminists, you have to know your place. STFU and let the women do the talking.". Yeah. Heard this before. You even use the word 'mansplaining'. Gotta tell ya', you're not making a good impression. 4:18 Brainwash the little kiddies. Got it. Get 'em while they're young. Okey dokey. Still not making a good impression. Let me guess, you're going to segue right into "teach the boys not to rape". Please prove me wrong. Please. Please. Pretty please. 4:50 Thank you for NOT saying you want to teach little boys to not rape. But now you're on housework. Right. Men go and bust their ass at their jobs, do most of that unpleasant DYING at work stuff and ... they have to come home and do housework. What will the women be doing? 4:59 There's also no country in the world where men outlive women. There are TWO where they live AS LONG as women. 5:08 I'm not really sure I trust a person like you to lead a revolution. You seem, well, insane. -Ideologically- Religiously compromised. Has feminism ever TRIED it's little utopia out in any real world setting (other than Sweden which seems to be dying of cultural ebola or something)? Maybe these countries you're toying with don't need YOUR approach to 'fixing things'. 6:22 So you want powerful men to do YOUR bidding. Has it occurred to you that this is exactly the mentality that keeps women from bothering to run for office? They don't HAVE to run for office if they can just manipulate MEN who are in office. In fact, this might very well put the lie to your entire 'patriarchy' (as if all the evidence against it and your total lack of proof hasn't already done this). You want MEN to change more to benefit WOMEN? What, our lower life expectancy isn't lower enough for you? Maybe we should double the disparity? Triple? If none of us made it past 20, would that be OK with you? Or did you have some other change in mind? What, you want us to be more like women? Fine. Then women can step up and be more like men. What are YOU doing? Are you... mining? Working on a deep sea fishing rig? Hauling garbage? Fighting in a war? No. Your job right now is to give a talk. Wow. You're really stepping up to the hard work so that men can give it up and change diapers and do housework. Sorry. INDOOR housework. Who mows the lawn? Probably a dude. Who fixes the roof? Probably a dude. Who cuts the wood? Probably a dude. Who tunes the car? Probably a dude. 6:54 Yes. Men die earlier than women. Men ARE in touch with their emotions. They're just not crying all the time. We're not women. We're men. And yes, the courts also see to it that we're not in touch with our kids. Tender Years Doctrine anyone? HeforShe, sexist as hell when it first came out. I do believe they've since changed the wording on their commitment but the focus is still on helping women, still painting women as the victims. You're not on TED. You're on TED ... X. You then go on to basically rehash Heforshe's original commitment wording which was for the least safe sex to do more to protect the most safe sex. You can give me all the anecdotes and cherry picked facts you want but the life expectancy data and YOUR OWN SPEECH tell a different story. So, basically, you're another feminazi. I should point out that only HALF of that is 'nazi'. The other half is 'feminist' as in 'feminine' as in 'happy kittens and rainbows'. Just b/c you ACT like you're a harmless little female doesn't mean you ARE a harmless little female. The other half of you is straight up Nazi. Also, to any feminists who've read this far, just b/c I think SHE is acting like a 'harmless little female' doesn't mean that I think of women as harmless or little. I think they're just as dangerous as men, easily. I do, however, think they tend to attack with smaller weapons or with proxy violence. The 'harmless little female' is just an act feminist women love to put on. One moment they want you to feel sorry for them. The next moment they're claiming to be just as X, Y and Z as any man. Well, we've met the men that feminist women are like. We fought them in WW2.

Bull statistics women aren't in parliament because they don't put in the effort, and the pay gap is an avarage over all men and women which doesn't take talk about what they decided to do for a job. Engineers make more then nurses. And before you start on the stem job stuff no one is stopping women from going into them they are just choosing not to. Hell no, why do you have to just talk about the importance of women? Men are important too and feminism seems to just seem like men are stupid brutes that steal all the money and power. this is stupid. If feminism was really about gender equality they would address the sentencing gap (something that is real) and the bias in divorce courts. Their isn't a long way to go for women the things that need to be changed are small. if you are about equality then you would look at the biggest things for each gender but you don't. so you can just stop

Patricia: Fair point. However it is overwhelmingly men who pay alimony. I am sure that it is only because this affects you'r daughter that you are able to see how unfair these laws are regarding alimony. If you had a son, then you would certainly have no problem with him having to spend the rest of his days in indentured servitude to his ex due to an archaic medieval law. Much like how this vile woman, is ideologically posessed to such a degree. That she oblivous to how she is being a bad parent, as she can only relate to her son through the prisim of her inane gender based world view. In which her son is demonised and dehumanised simply for being born. If feminism was about equal rights then i would be all for it. However women have had equal rights for about 40 years, and i am not sure if feminism has ever been about equality. The actions of feminists and the content of the books they write differ greatly from that nice sounding dictionary definition they wrote for themselves. Communism also has a nice sounding dictionary definition, and like communism feminism is marxist poison.

The problem with feminism is that women have all the opportunities to get into higher positions and make more money, but they are often too scared to ask for a raise and fill those spots, so then a man with more testosteron and generally more courage comes along and he does ask for a raise and he gets the spot in the company that the woman could have. And now that she has lost the place she blames the man for taking it? She blames the boss for choosing the man above her? Life isn't easy and being successful isn't something that will be layed upon your lap in order for you to just accept it. You have to work hard in order to get those jobs, but women are worse at fighting for what they're worth than men are. I'm not saying that men are better than women. I'm trying to say that because of biological differences in things like testosteron levels between men and women, men generally have more courage to take risks and then get better jobs.

You just want love and affection, intimacy. And that I know it's not your fault how you feel. Its this brainwashed horrible, apathetic, artificial idealogy that has done this. Thing is there is so much love there in the world, and yet the idea of it while it preaches stamps on on love or friendship. There is going to be resentment, the stereotype of its judgement will fade and show what people have done. Only thing is they want empathize for anther. They feel sorry about themselves becouse feminism were in the wrong. I wonder how many hearts had been broken and distoryed by a seemingly good idealogy?

@@andie672 First, and perhaps obviously, more men than women work in the fields with the highest rates of occupational injuries. The occupations with the highest rates of death are loggers, fishing workers, aircraft pilots, flight engineers, and roofers. In 2018, 97% of loggers, 92% of fishing workers 94% of pilots and flight engineers, and 98% of roofers were men. The workplace fatalities in these professions are caused by falls, exposure to harmful environments, and injuries by work equipment. Differences in choice of profession explain only part of the disparity in workplace deaths. Over 40% of all work-related deaths are from transportation incidents. This statistic aligns with the larger trend over twice as many men as women die in motor vehicle accidents each year. Homicide and suicide are the third-leading cause of workplace deaths. Nationally, 77% of homicide deaths and 79% of suicide deaths are men. The ways people that get on the job offer insight into the state of men’s health. Overall, men in the US are three times more likely to die of injuries than women. The gender disparity in workplace deaths cannot be attributed to biological differences between men and women. Rather, gendered norms in job choice and behavior place men at risk in and out of the workplace.

You have people come on and speak about how they hate men. No one likes bigots yet you keep having bigots on your channel. I think it's about time that you realized that this dinosaur called feminism should be left to the fossilization it should and move forward. This woman spoke about how she neglects her son, when she shouldn't even have children if that is her outlook on life.

There is no such thing as equality, but there is such thing as people being TREATED equally. The difference: Imagine an average person, and a super strong and smart person who is better than them at everything. Will they ever be equal? No, the average person will never be as strong or smart as the better person, BUT the same 2 people have to be treated equally. That is kind of the situation between woman and men.
