I’ve been playing OW for 7 years now and I don’t remember spending a dollar on it. And I have most the skins and emotes and voice lines in the game since OW1 -the same items they still place in the shop for new players- I’ve got it all through playing the events, gaining coins from challenges and all that. I think it’s important for the game to have options to get certain items for those who are not willing to pay

The thing I dislike the most about f2p games is their reliance on FOMO, especially in fortnite. Just because you didn't play the game within a specific time frame, you can't have this specific cosmetic. Fortnite is by far the least egregious for sure. I’m pretty there has been times where they have actually changed skins to be more visible when it was a problem. Another thing is that weapon models are always the same for everyone, the only thing that changes is the wraps which are just effectively just alternative colors. Other games change the entire weapon model which could give an advantage depending on the differences.

The second issue is when the games only content is events intent on selling you things. Imagine a game going through 4 straight events and updates that only added $160 bundles in the shop for you to buy. Months of "buy these items" and nothing else. You get Apex Legends.

This is a really weak argument. Yes developers need to get paid, but there is no reason each cosmetic and part of the game is as priced as high as they are unless they want to attract whales and people with addictive personality and weak impulse control. These kinds of games make like 100x more than the biggest AAA games. These games should be capped at $500 at the very most to unlock all of the content. Paying up to $20 for one cosmetic is insane. These things used to be free in $50-60 games. Now these games require you to spend $1000+ for only a fraction of that. The gameplay is often more shallow in these kinds of games. Look at Multiversus vs Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has much more content and modes. To unlocked everything probably cost under $150. For multiversity it is probably 3 thousand at least.

Well lets dissect that a little. For the sake of the argument we'll say that the primes essentially are no different than their vanilla counterparts. What are the advantages to buying it then? If memory serves correct it already comes with a preinstalled catalyst or reactor (for non wf players this is an upgrade that allows you double the mod capacity needed to put weapon and warframe mods on.) Plus the cost of building a catalyst or reactor is 23 hours of real waiting time, unless you already have some in your inventory as a prebuilt reward drop from an event which could occur once or twice a year. That is if they even drop prebuilt from those events (idk man haven't played in like forever.) My point is, you need to wait 23 hours each time to build ONE of those, which guess what, gets sped up by paying platinum (warframe's in game premium currency). You earned your platinum from in game trading? Okay fair point, but the counterpoint to this is free plat is just not a thing outside of getting lucky from devstreams. Someone buys it, which is why it can even be traded for in the first place (you get a small amount upon making a new account but this is not tradeable so lol). But I got way off track with the catalysts, lets talk about the warframe itself as intended. Say a new prime frame comes out. You can earn it by playing the game (and for me this is what I always did bc I enjoy actually playing the game xD) and getting 4 parts, 3 of which take 12 hours aside the blueprint, which needs all 3 parts fully built (really this will take 12 hours for all 3 because you can build all 3 in crafting bench at once) and then the blueprint, which takes 72 hours to fully build the frame. Again, all of which can be sped up with plat. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a game like this, I did so myself for years, but being realistic about this right, I can't say It's not pay to win. You pay either with money, or time. And that's just keepin it real w you bossman. Cheers.

Warframe is not a bad example of this by any means but those that pretend Warframe is not pay2win simply because you can grind to get things are abit dense. I feel like Overwatch 2 now gives you plenty of ways to get free currency. When the game first launched the prices were preposterous and you couldn’t earn currency which blew. But now that you can get currency from the free battle pass or challenges it isn’t so bad. If you stay away from the overpriced items and spend your currency wisely then you can easily get away with spending like $5 a season while still getting plenty of items in the shop. That’s fine in my book since I’ve probably only spent like $45 on the game so far and got 350 hours out of it.

Another F2P that I loved back in 2015 was Planetside 2. They have their regular currency that you can earn pretty rapidly now as well as DB cash that you have to pay for. And that's the only way to customize your characters.

You can take one look at Apex to see what happens when profit vastly outweighs player experience. No one can justify that an heirloom will cost you over $140 yet doesnt come with a special finisher (unless you buy the latest recolor version while the original still wont have access to it despite the only difference being their color), doesnt come with a special emote, sometimes has a special banner frame instead of a pose, and no skydive emote for the heirloom. All of this also applies to the prestige skins as well.

They keep the players playing because well, it's free, it's easy to bring friends in, and cosmetics can be earned by playing as a goal to achieve. I play OW2 because it's fun at times, for the fantasy experience of being good at a game. But soon I'll let go of this illusion, and I will only play at my own leisure. I know what to spend on that makes me much much happier: A better PC, a healthy mix of online and offline games, and financial security.

The problem is, in warframe to make progress is to win. There is no direkt endgoal other than grinding for better gear and characters. Furthermore, the game makes you wait for the completion of that gear, even up to multiple days. By paying you can skip this cooldown/timer. Warframe has a vast economy and being able to output supply faster gives you an immediat advantage in that market, possibly enabling you to outpace all competitors

I barely buy games cos I mainly play multiplayer stuff and the only game I spend money on is Overwatch cos I've had it since open beta 2016. Only game I've bought in around 3 whole years is Dragonball Sparking Zero and I'll play that A LOT. Oh and in Overwatch 1 I grinded enough lootboxes through simply leveling up and arcade wins that I own every single lootbox item ever created without spending a cent... except buying Overwatch 1 of course.

Warframe tries hard to be good and its doing a dam good job at it. You can earn premium currency through trading with players. Not to mention duviri a semi rogue like alternate game mode and warframe 1999 which is still in development. Primes offer rather insignificant stat increases and are really only looked for as the endgame "FashonFrames" HELL the devs even do livestreams where they play with random people from community and talk about future updates I was skeptical about the game at first but it genuinely feels like a breath of fresh air, it feels like I get actual value for my time

Warframe is NOT pay to win. its not even a pvp game (theres a pvp mode but nobody plays it anyway) there's an in-game market where you can earn Plat and buy things and all warframes and weapons can be grinded for. Which is the whole point of the game

You do have to give them credit where it’s due. Fair enough the shop is a bit of a price gouge, however, people spending money on the game, keeps the devs in their job so that we, the players, have content. If you just bought every new game that came out, how much money would you spend in the long run, and how often or long will you play each new game? Either way people are going to spend money.

I have stayed nights, grinding to get a skin for free in like overwatch 2 and I actually kinda enjoy it. While there is many games which are better, to earn something free in a free game is rewarding for me

Don't spend money and the microtransaction wont hinder you meanwhile the focus on profits are so wild that the game development suffers because putting dev work towards the next cosmetic item vastly outweighs fixing any gamebreaking bugs or issues most of the time unless it hinders the store. If it does then that shit is fixed within the hour.
