On the topic of the "Mother" mural. That Hollywood studio destroyed genuine street art to promote a crappy movie. The community enjoyed and respected the old mural. Based on this example of corporate greed I say bombs away!

Word!! I hate it when young writers coming up don't bother to learn or respect their own history! Paint over old pieces, people who've passed, RIP productions, etc. Those kids don't usually last long though! I always stress that everyone should know their roots!!

It's a billboard on a wall. This isn't anything new people good lord. Someone puts a sign up and you start doomsday prepping. Go see a specialist. What happened? Did you see the sign and erupt in panicked sweats until you could get the golf game on? Nah, most people ignore it unless they're already interested.

Even street art that isn't explicitly an ad can aid in gentrification, that's another reason people don't like it. Street art is a sanitised form of graffiti that can make an area look attractive to gentrifiers and property developers... I don't have beef with every street artist, just not stoked about the function art can play in gentrification. Art should exist for everybody to enjoy, not as an asset which makes money for the already wealthy. But I guess this contradiction of art isn't new..

personally, if it ain't disrespectul towards an artist, a collective of artists or the community as a whole i simply view it as more art/propaganda and there will always be writers out there willing to cross it. big corps know how much aesthetics play in their marketing and the lines between graffiti, art and propaganda will only blurr more the game keeps going, everyone is trying to get a piece of the pie and the key is adaptation, same bullshit, new ways to go about it. glad you're back and.... 10K+ BITCH, congrats my man, still innovating graff/art debates and putting out fresh content. 100k mark up next in no time, cheers mate

I understand and feel Im artist and have done alot murals as a kid. I did one for my middle showing a mixture of African culture in NYC. 3 large African Mask with a silhouette of NY colored in red, green, and black. I remember my old principal called me, my classmate and the teacher we did the mural with. They wanted us to do another, but true was we didn't do shit we were did to take pictures and show face. For some sellout company. They didn't even finish it the piece mural. In my High-school we did alot especially afew with Tats Cru which got me and my friends into Graffiti. Me , a friend and an artist did a mural in our lunch room dedicated to hip hop. So I understand this whole spectrum

I've been a "tagger", or writer, the whole time I did graffiti and I can't stand this corporatization of graffiti just to dump more useless ads into peoples eye's. I think this is a justified cross-out, as apposed to some territorial bullshit that can escalate. The fact is these are just ads and nobody is mistaking this for actual graffiti so honestly fuck em. The artist already got paid (GG, get that bag!) and the mural is nothing to be admired. It's just a replication of a poster. It lacks the honesty & uniqueness of graffiti styling and could've just as easily been printed out. Typically the artist isn't allowed to design it or add their own flare so there's nothing special about it. Once the ad expires, or is no longer relevant, then it's just nothing and serves no purpose. Do you think in 30yrs someone's gonna be excited to see the Gears of War 4 ad rather than a survived IRAK crew tag or an original TAKI183? People don't care about games or movies the week after it comes out, but an old 60's/70's piece that's still around is literal history and still relevant today. This is basically Ad Blocker for the streets lol

I can totally understand when Buff Monster got burned by MSK, b/c he talked shit about graffiti! When I met him in almost 15 yrs ago, at the time, I liked what he was doing on the streets... I rocked a throw-up w/ my homie & he just wanted to find a blank black billboard to wheatpaste. There were so many other spots, so he ended up doing nothing. I got a feeling he wasn't into letters at all!! So, when he made that very negative comment about graffiti, that was the nail in the coffin for him!! I'm much older than most writers & I'll never agree with everyone. Some people just burn everything...
